How many of you talk to yourself during races, and what do you say?
I have a couple of mantras I repeat to myself:
1) Some variation on "slow is fast", "keep it on the track" or "slow in fast out" to keep myself calm and counter my natural tendency to brake ever later and compromise my corner entry or go flying off the track.
2) "Fangio hands." The great Juan Manuel Fangio was known for his delicate touch on the wheel. Having the lightest possible grip makes is much easier to feel what the car is doing. It's easy to get excited and grip the wheel too tight, which compromises feel and makes it harder to maintain control at the limit of grip. Reminding myself of this aspect of the great man's talent helps me maintain a light touch.
Then of course there is the occasional outburst of expletives when I make an mistake or get punted off, but I'll leave the details to your imagination
