Test Course, inside or outside?

In test course, do you go faster when you drive on the inside of the curve or outside? The computer players drive on the outside all the time, but you would normally go faster on the inside so I'm not sure.

Inside. The test course is so damn wide that the exit/entrance speeds are nearly the same all the time. No matter what, no car needs to go full left for turning, therefore, you should take the inside. While you need to steer more, the speed you turn at is the same, but the distance is cut by a great chunk.

I've alwasy wondered this, I usually drive on the inside because it is a shorter line.

Drive inside line and note down lap time.
Drive outside line and note down lap time.
Do this in exactly the same car.
Compare lap times.
Then you will know what is faster.

too difficult for me :sly:
too many things to do! just to know what's faster! :yuck:

The fastest is obviously the shortest way ... which is the inside all the way ! the track is so wide that you don't lose any speed when turning so that must be the best then.

The Test Course needs to be banned. The long, monotonious hum is sure to cause some kind of schizophrenia, if not already.

I hate the Bloody test course, too boring. I hope it's not included in GT 4 or I will go crazy.
Anyways I tend to travel down the inside lane, mucho faster

Well, isn't that the classic racing line dilemna? You can either pick the shorter distance, or the straighter line. The shorter line means you go fast because you aren't travelling as far to get round the lap, and the straighter line means you can maintain a higher speed.

I personally start on the outside, then go to the inside later in the corner.

Thats obvious, youre taking a tighter line, thus using more of the tires grip, and wearing them faster. Not like this really matters on the test course.

Yeah who gives a #$%^ about test course ... you can catch a nap while driving on that boring thing ... hope it's not in gt4 as well ! Even the other oval circuit is better ... but still boring ! Why have a track like that, it tests no skill !

I say keep it in, but exclude it from races. I'd still want to have a top speed test and 400m and 1000m, which all are done at the test course, but then agian that's why its called the test course.

Very true iceman, but what about a airport type runway for 400, 1000 and top speed tests ... something like a 3km striaght or somethin ... those turns on test course only annoys you, why not one long straight ...

One long straight designed to hit max speed is not too realistic. The test course itself already has a roughly 1.7 km straight for you to max out on. It's plain stupid to have such a big course, because there is no real life track (that I know of) has a straight that long (with the exception of the Bonneville Salt Flats, but that's another story)

You guys are ALL wrong. It's outside, all the way. While the answer may seem obvious to go inside, you lose a ton of speed, 6 or 7 mph in my case. And this varies depending on the car. The speed lost is not enough to gain. While it may seem wide and look like a definite inside, it's outside all the way. I gained over two seconds going outside. And then another 3 with a HUGE draft. But that's another story ;) Hope I cleared some things out.

Wow Thanks 👍

Ya think? Does putting something in caps make it true? OK then

THE FASTEST LAPS ARE DONE ON THE INSIDE *. And I have evidence.

The evidence

This is the fastest lap posted at GT3 times. Note how the inside of the track is used.

* As I understand it, if the car has downforce, use the inside. No downforce, use the outside.

Oh, IC. Well when I tested it out, the outside was faster. As always, I'm proven wrong. But I'll be using the outside still, even if evidence points the other way. After all, criminals sometimes get away, right? :D

True, especially if they are driving a 1110bhp Viper.

(I always drive the outside too, because I feel that I should!)

There is actualy an oval somewhere in Europe they use to test top speeds and the straights are damn long. Goto the MclAren web site and watch the video of the guy setting the record for top speed and see how long thsoe damn straights are, at over 200 mph it seems to take him almost a whole minute to pass one straight...

Just finished the 20 laps of Japanese GT Championship at Test Course using Castrol Tom's Supra tuned to same specs as the AI entered, that is we both redlined at the same speed. We passed and re-passed each other for the first three laps and I drove the inside for the next 5 laps hoping to get an advantage. Ended up travelling slower than AI because its a tighter radius. Came back up to outside and took couple of more laps to catch up again. Once in slipstream we went back to passing and re-passing until I found best position was to be three or four car lengths behind coming out of last turn using the slipstream to pass on his outside and win by smallest of margins. Not a nice circut to race on but happy to get the win.
