jondot: give em a few, and some weirdo tuner will have one of each done up that way :P i was thinking that they would dig up a scratch car for it, and since they don't sell the Ka, here...

i bet in a couple years, dodge will rebadge a Panda and name it knuckles!!

This view has revealed the completely different rear end design than I originally thought. They look like two completely different cars!

I think you're right...Rear looks great. Front...not so much. The unfortunate thing is that this indeed confirms that the name is indeed "Sonic." Which, aside from a Hedgehog whose games have floundered in mediocrity, is also a drive-in fast-food place.

The Aveo/Sonic really is a good-looking car, but my fear is that the dynamics will not match the look being pushed forward there. The Fiesta is a fantastic car, but it can really only be driven up to 7/10ths before things get weird. I'd like to have the Sonic be able to exceed that just a bit.

Tell you what, some people really go out of their way to find the most obscure car nobody has ever heard of and make the most ridiculous comparisons with it. You can't convince me you actually knew what that concept thingy was before you went looking for it.
 
Couldn't they have put the bow-tie badge on the hood?

That grill looks absurdly huge on a Silverado 3500, let alone it's smallest car.

I just had a horrid thought. If they offered this in Pink...Would they call it the Sonic Amy?

So, it turns out that Chevrolet has chosen not to completely emasculate the Sonic, which I personally find entirely surprising...

Frankly, the car looks great. As muddled as the Cruze seems from some angles, it seems like GM was looking to make a car that stands out, and it works. The interior looks quite good as well, I'll point you to the Autoblog gallery here, the materials appear to be top-notch, and the fit seems rather tight as well. The engine packages are actually fairly surprising as well, essentially a drag-and-drop job from the Cruze. The 138 BHP option from the 1.8L or the 138 BHP option from the turbo 1.4L. That, and GM will be happy to offer a six-speed manual on the turbo. Killer, brah.

This is a rare car where I think the sedan is better looking than the hatchback. But that could just be a trick with the angles. The hatch is really awkward looking with that seemingly tiny rear overhang and giant front overhang.

I find it remarkable that they've managed to make a B segment sedan look halfway decent and not way out of proportion. I'm sure that will change once tiny wheels show up on the lower spec models though.
 
Chevrolet Sonic Z-Spec: 2011 Detroit Auto Show



The latest version of the car — still billed as a concept study, but surely under consideration for production — is rendered in black with orange accents. The Sonic Z-Spec features orange-painted 18-inch BBS wheels shod with Michelin performance tires, orange Brembo four-piston calipers and tan leather Recaro buckets with orange stitching.

The little screamer also sports Pedders suspension bits and a Borla exhaust with oversize chrome outlets.

No word yet on engine specs, but look for an uprated version of the 138-horsepower Ecotec 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

I'm interested. I'm not sure about the orange though, or why they are sticking with drums on the rear.
 
So is the car going to be available in sonic blue, tails orange, and eggman red? Will it be featured in a sega video game?

Well in fairness, when did the Aveo actually live? It was as soulless as my toaster.
 
I actually like the Sonic. Nice-looking car. It looked kind like a Mitsubishi Lancer when I first saw it at the 2011 Houston Auto Show. The Aveo just didn't connect to me in regards to subcompacts, and especially not the most recent Aveo before it got the axe. Cool Chevy.

Actually, it is. The only places that small, compact cars make sense is in big cities like New York. And in those cities it's easier to get around in a cab or by public transport.

This. I live in New York. The only time we use cars is if we are going out somewhere outside of the city.

Because a car weighing this little will do just fine with drums on the back.

Anyway, been reading up on the 1.4T and it seems like Chevy really, really detuned the engine. With a very mild, very safe tune people are getting 170hp out of these. I would expect the Sonic SS or whatever to be around that but for some reason, it seems like it will stay at 138hp.
 
They were suggesting that the Sonic RS would get some mild performance upgrades, but it sounds like it isn't the case at least in the engine department. Although the thought of an SS version of the Sonic isn't a bad idea, GM seems pretty sour on the suggestion thus far. My guess is that if they ever get around to doing the Z-Spec stuff, that'll be when they start tweaking the 1.4L unit.
 
I give this car a year before it's pulled due to poor sales.
 
Let's see, rising gas prices+increased fuel economy+increased quality+low starting price=poor sales? How long was the aveo around for how horrible of a car it was?
