I think one of the reasons it doesn't look 100 percent real is because of how long it took for the car to get the way it is. We know that in GT5 that the part of the car that hits something is the part of the car that gets damaged. In the BB build it takes a long time to get to where the ferrari is and to get there you are going to be hitting multiple walls at multiple different angles. To me this seems to be the reason why the car looks the way it does. I am sure if the car could become that damaged from just one crash it would look much better.

One more. Jordan hopefully will post the rest.

Yes does look great, but is deformed.Just hoping one hit completely destroys a rally, Nascar, JGTC car etc really. You'd be on pins, if you had to complete a 24hr endurance race with that level of possible damage.

It' never going to look 100 percent real. Car manufacturers won't allow it. If they made it real without being able to do more damage, it would get damaged to a certain point and then nothing would happen. It has to be sensitive but not too much that it can't get anymore damaged after the first crash.

*Checks list of default excuses*

Err:
  • Manufacturers wouldn't allow
  • Long development time
  • Lot of effort to get where it is now
  • Never been done before at this level of graphics
  • At the end of the day it's just a game

:sly:

Given manufacturer restrictions, the most I would expect would be approximately something like this for a frontal crash:

EuroNCAP05.jpg

Cockpit area pretty much intact, but front end destroyed (not only hood and bumper), car unusable.
This occurred at only 64 Km/h, but would look decent for higher speeds too.

Yep, the clear and refreshing voice of rationality. Well said.

You guys think I should also send a tip to Kotaku to spread the news of procedural damage? They might hate on it, but at least let the people see for themselves.

Those all cars on screens, look like they want to say "why did you do that to me?!" :)
That's damage are very, very nice!

The great thing about this damage system is that unlike the efforts of people to push it too it's limits in these demos, come the real deal when we are all racing together, it won't look as stupid...if you get what I mean. A slight tap here and there with the odd bad off that deforms a car more than usual...but nothing like this excessive force to prove the point.

In race conditions it'll all look fine.

Now just to be happy we need adjustable model of this damage.
Scale from 1 to 5 where 5 is shown on the pic above and car is after the first wall hit.

Until one of us forgets to brake for the chicanes one the straight at Le Mans

Okay so I hate to be the one to repeat quote these big images, but....
Look at the damage on these two cars. It's almost exactly the same around the right headlight. I don't think this is a no-two-crashes-the-same damage model.

They are the same as to the extent of the damage, but they don't look the same. The first pic looks a bit weird, like the car is starting to melt.

But overall i'm very pleased with this damage! Lets see if the WRC or NASCAR can improve on it.

Perhaps I'm being a bit hasty, it could just the shape of the panels. They are different, but you can see the same shape in both cars and that seems like a big coincidence if the damage is "procedural". I guess it could also be the model damaging around set constraints.

If you look at both pictures on top of each other , you'll see the difference. The headlight on the white Ferrari is higher up and more to the right, and the tearing on the red is more severe.

First it was because there was no damage... now it's because the damage are not so real... guys, this is the best game ever...
👍

I will quote it every 5 pages...Just to remind someone which forget something ;)

Edited: Can anyone provide video with that unholy damage? Dying to see that!

And I'll write once again that once the first steps into making something realistic (damage in this case) are performed, stopping halfway is going to displease many people. What we have currently looks great (and in some aspects better than any other game), but I guess it's now at or close to the bottom of the uncanny valley. Ok, maybe the term is not really applicable here, but you should get what I mean.
