The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion---Discussion Thread

So it turns out this whole time i was making potions...i just didn't realize when they show up in the inventory, they're not listed under the names i was giving. :ouch:

Has anybody found this very small Fort Tower (about 10 feet tall) east of Lake Rumare that makes noises that sound like Bottles rolling around? It's it a bug? Glitch? Or Easter Egg?
I don't believe that this is a spoiler, but did it look like this?

If so, there are many of these scattered throughout Cyrodiil, and they are called Wayshrines.

No. It was shaped like a Water-Butt, but about 10 feet tall. And whenever I got near it I could hear loads of Bottles rolling around. Their were tiny ledges on the side but I never managed to look inside of it.

Eh, I'll look tomorow for this. I'm interested, can you get inside? Possibily a Quest Fort...

You can't go inside it. It's basically like a Hollow Pillar. I can remember it being next to the road that goes round the Imperial City, on the East side. So, as I said before, probably near Fort Magia or Fort Urasek. :)

Hey everyone. So i have this crazy idea. I live maybe a half hour away from Bethesda Softworks, and within the next month or so i'm gonna go down and see if i can take some sort of tour. I've been to a couple software places before, the atmosphere generally feels laid-back. One place i used to go even had a keg of beer for its employees! Anything to foster a creative environment i guess. 💡

So my idea is to maybe go a couple times, and if i get into cahoots with anyone there, i'm gonna throw some ideas to him or her. :sly: here's a few.

Get rid of orc pcs!--traditionally, orcs are considered EVIL beings. You shouldn't be able to walk around any "civilized" area playing an orc. D&D mostly had orcs as humanoids to be fought against (unless you were an extremely evil character yourself). Even half-orcs were sometimes shunned or not tolerated. There were some "good" orcs and half-orcs in traditional D&D, however, they were extremely rare. :grumpy:

Get rid of lizard men pcs!--same reasoning, they are generally supposed to be neutral evil humanoids if i remember correct..they had their own society seperate from humans, elves, etc. Everytime i have to talk to a lizard man or a cat-person, i roll my eyes.

Where are the dwarves, halflings, gnomes, and brownies? I've found plenty of dwarven weapons and armour, but have yet to see any of these races. We should be able to PLAY them right from the get-go, too, because these races often work together, go on adventures, and sometimes even build civilizations together with humans and elves.

Beards. Nothing says "axe warrior" like a big, bristly beard, right? Nothing says "sorcerer" like a long, flowing white beard. Same goes with goatees for theives. Silly looking moustaches for pirates. The "beard" option needs to go way beyond just a 5 o'clock shadow as portrayed by the game.

Climbing hills & scaling moutains. I realize this isn't "tomb raider" or some other such game where movement involves crouching, stumbling, and crawling. Maybe i dont have enough imagination or something, but when your character is climbing a super-steep area (and there are many of these in the game) they shouldn't be just walking on 2 feet! Not without the risk of falling, that is.

I have a feeling the folks over at Bethesda already are working on this to some capacity, as the next game will certainly be improved.

There should be some sort of romantic element to the game. This was actually my girlfriend's idea, and she's a huge fan of Sims games. While i don't agree with her fully (this aint Sims, i try & tell her) i have to admit she's got a point. It would be cool to find yourself with a lover in the game who can help you in some way. It would take the whole persuasion element a step further.

YOu should be able to hire a small party. At least one other person to help you along adventures. Whether they fight or just carry stuff would be up to the type of NPC you hire.

D&D needs to be consulted more often. I was curious by all the imps i keep having to deal with. I looked in one of my old 70s-era D&D books, and sure enough, the imp is found "very rarely". They appear one at a time, are summoned by an evil cleric, demon, or mage, and shouldn't be inhabiting entire dungeons, let alone out in the countryside.

I realize most of you younger players won't get where i'm coming from. We used to take the game seriously, so trying to get around what the books said could mean (sometimes) an hour-long discussion on how the game is actually played.

Overall, i'm pleased with the game. It's better than anything else out there so far as RPGs go...most "RPGs" have been disappointing, at least Elder Scrolls captures alot of the essence of the game it was based on (dungeon & dragons).

Anyways, that's my list so far. I'm not even sure i'll even pull this off, chances are i'll get to the Bethesda Softworks and won't be able to give any suggestions. I'll feel like somewhat of a doofus if i start suggesting things, for instance, and suddenly be escorted out of the building! We'll see how it goes.

Any other ideas from other Oblivion players? Whadoya think? It's a kooky idea, right? Hell, i might do it, though!

You can only get it from the US store, and that version isent combatible with a PAL version of the game.

Or buy the game of the year edition wich include the shivering islands expansion.

Basicly if you have the orginal PAL version of the game, you are f...... Because Bethesda never bothered to make it aviable at the EU store.

I've just started playing the PS3 version of Oblivion, and I have a stupid question:

I can't cast any spells. Why not?

I'm playing a Dark Elf archer, Warrior sign. I've got a couple of spells available like a little Flash and a little Cure spell. I've assigned these to hot keys on the D-pad to select. I can change the little icon in the lower left to show my selected spell, but triggering the R2 button does nothing.

When I was doing the first tutorial level I couldn't cast a single spell, even when it told me to. In desperation I switched controllers, and then (for a while) the R2 button worked. After I little play time I saved and quit.

Now, when I fired the game back up this morning, it won't cast spells again, even though my magicka is full. I switched between 3 different controllers, including the one that used to work, and no luck. Most of these controllers do not see a lot of use so I find it hard to believe that the R2 button is the only one that is worn out, and it is worn out on all 3 controllers.

Any thoughts about what I'm doing wrong? I have a couple of USB controllers also plugged in (RB, DFP). All the other buttons work perfectly. Thanks!

What am I doing wrong?

It's a great game. First of all, is R2 the only trigger that doesn't work, or do both of them fail to be recognized? Anyways, try this:

Fire up your game and load a game save. Set your current controller to controller number 1 if needed. If R2 doesn't work (Be sure to check if L2 works as well) do a long press of the PS button, turn off the controller and turn it back on again. That should do it.

No, just R2, I think, but I didn't specifically try L2. At first I thought I was an idiot and just couldn't cast spells, but switching controllers made it work. But the second time I fired up the game, the controller that had worked no longer did. Thanks for the tip - I'll try that next.

No problem. Do let me know if it works though; when I first had this issue I thought my controllers were defective (Got this game and the console on early 2007) but I had never actually heard about anyone else having this issue until now.

Duke! If your having problems with your spell casting, This happend to me a million times, TILL! I found out that if I unplug my Guitar hero/Rockband USB ports, Everything works! solved!

I reeeaaally hope they're making an Elder Scrolls V

I remember back in '05 thinking the graphics in this game looked the most incredible ever and couldn't wait to get my hands on it... Now they're somewhat mediocre :P

Morrowind came out May 2002

Oblivion came out March 2006

Elder Scrolls 5 out in 2010? :)

Thanks! It does work to just turn the controller off and back on again, though. But it's nice to know what's causing the conflict.

Hey, I'll start asking tactical questions too. I am an Archer which I believe calls for Light Armor as a skill. Am I hurting the effectiveness of my bow attacks by wearing the rusty heavy armor picked up in the tutorial levels?

BTW, this is also true for another Bethesda game: Fallout 3.

Actually yes. You should prob. trash that. What level are you, as You can find light armor almost anywhere! And before you start doing the main quest, why not start walking EVERYWHERE and finding every incampment, cave and hideout you can find to level up, get the feel for general combat.

Also as an Archer, you should sneek whenever you can for a sneek kill, Archer Sneek kills are one of the most deadlist kills in the game, if not THE most.

Also there is NO better online resource for this game than www.uesp.net -- It's the most complete, immense (etc.. etc..) wiki you'll find on the web. You'll find just about anything.

FYI everyone, UESP seems to be having some sort of problem at the moment and you can't get anywhere except the main page.

As far as the controller problem goes I have had Oblivion since I got my PS3 in 07 and I never had a problem until recently. I stopped playing the game for about 8 months and in the mean time played fallout 3, during this time I started occasionally having problems with the bottom triggers but it was never enough to worry me. Upon picking up Oblivion again about a month ago I started having more and more of the same problem. Turns out it was related to a USB keyboard I started leaving plugged in about the time I played Fallout, must be some sort of strange conflict (if there is a possible glitch, Bethesda is likely to make it happen). Anyways, now I unplug everything including my external HDD when playing Oblivion so I don't suddenly loose my spell casting ability in the middle of a fight. Almost to level 43 and currently playing Shivering Isles loving every minute of it!

My main issue is the R3 button. But then again, I hater that in every game. When I'm in a tense situation I can't help but push down on the sticks, meaning I randomly change POV in the middle of every melee.

I have the same problem, fortunately in Oblivion it's just POV and crouch/stand vs. something more important.

Yeah, can you imagine if it was a teleport spell, or like draw/hide weapon? lol duke would be everywhere with his fights!

Has anybody seen this clip before? It's been around for ages, but still worth a look. If you've ever had this guy following you around, you would know exactly how satisfying this would be...
