I feel for Magnussen but I suppose I feel even more sorry for McLaren. Whatever they did and whoever they chose it was a case of damned if they do and damned if they don't. Get rid of Jenson and you get rid of a top driver and a loyal talent. Get rid of Kevin and you negate the whole point of a young driver programme. But look at what Red Bull's Academy has done. Look at the talent they have produced.

I hope Kevin get's a drive at a team somewhere in F1 or elsewhere.
 
Great for Button, shame for Magnussen.

My heart said Button but my head said Magnussen... I don't think they 'need' two senior drivers, or at least I don't think they will benefit more in the long term than if they had kept Magnussen in the hotseat. Still, will be great to see Button in F1 for another few years... that said, I don't envy him having to play second fiddle to Alonso.
 
This will be interesting though, Button was quite close to Hamilton whilst obviously a bit slower, wonder the difference between him and Alonso, Button may of lost a little speed since then, but at the same time he is only 1 year older then Alonso.

A balance needs to be struck. Now McLaren are in the position of having to entertain the needs of TWO drivers who think they should be the kingpin.

Having one experienced driver and one young driver learns from the older driver which enables the young driver to learn and develop without having to rot in the reserve team getting no racing in at all.
 
Jenson did kinda prove this year that he had at least one year left in him, but I think 2015 should be his last. Magnussen needs to get Force India levels of FP1 runs this year, which would benefit him a lot.

Well, two drivers who should be kingpin and one who already thinks he is.
 
Two experienced former WDCs develop Honda engine for Magnussen's 2016 return. Button jollies off to the WEC after one final year of solid points scoring; just what McLaren need with Alonso dragging himself to the top 4 on a regular basis.
 
Good for McLaren's car development. Not sure about Button though, as being Alonso's team mate isn't the easiest position in F1 grid

Neither is being Hamilton's teammate but Button did very well all things considered; notwithstanding that he was the defending champion in his first season much like Alonso's 2007.
 
Poor Kevin :indiff: Even if Button only has one year left where does that leave Vandoorne if Magnussen is next in line? Very disappointed in Mclaren, it seems like they've just bowed to the pressure of the British public :grumpy:

It's called a rhetorical question - the point being that you couldn't rely and rumours and speculation based on their say-so when other evidence was emerging with the potential to disprove it.

So it wasn't a stupid question. It was a stupid assumption from a know-it-all.

I expect Button to surprise Alonso with how competitive he is - just as he surprised Hamilton.

The real difference will be when the car is not right - Alonso will drag a performance out of the car regardless. Button needs the car to be working for him.

It sucks for KM though. He did have a very good first half of the season but he was less impressive in the second half of the season. That might have been the difference.
 
Well, there's always the chance of Button going one more year, and Magnussen taking over there for him. Then Alonso goes for a year after Button leaves and Vandoorne replaces him. By then, McLaren might be back near the front of the grid where they hope to be.

...if the rest of the staff can be competent enough to get them there and keep them there.
 
Honda want that Championship image back. Honda(Japan) adore Button. They couldn't get him that C'hip, but he got it one year later with Brawn. Whether it was Honda pressure to have Button in the #2 seat, I don't know. We'll see how Zo and Jenson go at Albert Park. I'm just hoping that Honda package is strong.
 
I don't think they'll be the type to butt heads with each other, but if they're somehow both in the title picture, it could be possible.

And for once the silly world of F1 works out the way the fans/viewers wanted it to as specified here and other F1 places of discussion I've seen. Button got to keep the drive like many think he should have, and instead of Kevin being tossed aside like his dad some 20 years ago he is instead kept for 3rd driver/reserve. Finally. Also I figured Honda would want a guy that was a bit familiar with the Japanese company, lived in Japan but...wasn't Japanese.

I mean Button is the best Japanese non-Japanese driver you can get :sly:
 
Has anyone else noticed that Alonso, Button, and Raikkonen will have raced against two generations of a driver family after 2015?
