Rumors in the paddock are getting stronger the settlement involves handing over a share in Sauber team to the backer of VDG, Marcel Boekhoorn.

That would be interesting and, as a few have said, would make sense. This could be a brute-force revenge-driven takeover. Sauber aren't in any position to hold that off unless they have some rich friends who are prepared to fight the fight for them.

The Sauber organisation are not over endowed with money nor backers. Neither are they overly endowed with brains. Peter is approaching senility and 1/3 owner Monisha has made a mess in her own nest. With a reasonably quick and reliable car, Sauber is ripe for a timely plucking.

It has been suggested that Boekhoorn has been trying to get into a team for a while now. But buying into one so that your son-in-law can entertain his fantasy of being a racing driver? It was unseemly when Nelson Piquet and Graeme Chilton did it in GP2. And what happens when it becomes evident that Giedo van der Garde becomes a liability? Even if he had had the benefit of testing, had he be driving this weekend, he likely would have been on the same footing as Ericsson rather than fighting alongside Nasr for a spot in Q1. So unless Boekhoorn is interested in partial or total team ownership independently of van der Garde, it seems like a very bad outcome from the team - I hope he is independent, since he has backed Williams in Formula 1 and Tom Coronel in the WTCC with his McGregor brand (McGregor being a traditional Dutch name ...) in the past, but if van der Garde is the horse that he's backing, then I am afraid that he will prove to be just as short-sighted as van der Garde is. And that's going to be hanging around Sauber's neck and look really uncomfortable.

A bit like Lewis Hamilton's chain, really.

The spectre of Colin Kolles is looming large in the background, if the BBC are to be believed.

I think I've made my own thoughts on Mr. Kolles very clear over my time at this forum, he's a con-man and everything he touches in F1 turns to something-with-all-the-value-taken-away.

BBC
The Sauber story has more to it than it appeared over the weekend - pulling the strings is said to be former Caterham and HRT boss Colin Kolles, who is using the Van der Garde situation to try to take over the team.

It might be the Beeb, but it's also Andrew Benson. And there's a reason why "Autosport or it didn't happen" is a saying.

After Autosport, James Allen is probably the best source, then F1 Fanatic, and Adam Cooper when he updates. Then you've got a gap to Sky, and then another gap to Benson, who is marginally better than Saward and thejudge13.

Because looming specters are so much more pertinent.

The problem I have with a conspiracy theory is that it completely ignores the fact that putting the resolve of a dispute in the hands of a third party never comes with enough of a warranty on the issue.

There is absolutely no way Sauber would have agreed on the nomination of M. Todd Wetmore had they have the slightest hesitation on his objective discernment capability and integrity.

Moreover, it conveniently overlooks the fact that - in fine - Sauber where the sole responsible, albeit mitigating circumstances, for hiring more drivers entitled a 2015 racing seat than they had cars on offer.

Should they end trading a debt into shares would be exclusively up to their own faults and/or errors rather than whatever (un)existing VDG’s and/or backer’s mischievous plans.

Sauber may have got themselves into this position (I have no doubt that they did) but if VdG's filed accounts are correct then he's at least 8 million Euro in debt. He's getting the money and impetus from somewhere. In fairness my presumption was that it was the rich family member who was helping him... but the possibility that Kolles is involved is very plausible. That's what makes it a reasonably compelling rumour at least.

I hope it's false, in my opinion the further Kolles is away from F1 the better, especially given the damage he's done (and tried to do) in the past.

And so begin the 'Mardenborough to the Team Currently Known As Scuderia Toro Rosso for 2016' rumours.

According to Autosport (and I don't have a link just now), Alain Prost has convinced Carlos Ghosn that the only way forward for Renault is to return to Formula 1 as a dedicated works team. Toro Rosso has been tipped as the outfit that they are most likely to buy, as Lotus and Force India have debts that would need to be paid off.

Or start a fresh team? There is certainly space for it.

The link is this one :)

According to Motorsport-total.com his sponsors paid 13M € in 2014 to Sauber, so 15M sound ok. The question is, where do they get the money from? Seems like they want to transfer it this week.

Good luck. I think this guy did what he had to do. Got his (sponsors) money back, I hope with interest and I hope with heavy money penalties too.

Pity that it was probably Nasr's sponsors (who are blameless in this affair) who paid for it all

Now I hope the Sauber management has their F1 career ended too. Because I'd like to write "Good Riddance" regarding the dishonest bunch of them.

@Hun200kmh I'll keep in mind Sauber had possibly to react upon an impromptu, and that the trouble they have put themselves in is likely the result of an even more concerning problem. For sure they could have found a better way to emphasise current F1 sustainability.

As for VDG doing the right thing, no conceivable objection indeed.👍

The very clear implication of "Good riddance" is that he doesn't approve of Van der Garde standing up for his own legal rights. You see it differently?

"Renault" are fresh from abandoning "Lotus" now they're going to become the new "Minardi".

I hate continuity. Honestly, call the teams after their bases instead; Brackley, Enstone, Woking, Faenza, Hinwil, Grove. The in-name-only franchise sponsor hybrids team names are becoming rile me and I accept I'm probably the only one who cares.

I believe the "good riddance" was in regards to VDG finally admitting he doesn't have a future in F1.

You are not. The way I see it the Toleman-->Bennetton-->Renault-->Lotus was never the Renault team of old, and also never the Lotus team of old.
