The Formula 1 calendar development threadFormula 1

F1 at this rate is going to have a calendar approaching NASCAR levels. I remember reading around 2004 of a quote from Bernie (that I still wish to try and find) that the calendar would never go beyond 17 races. How things change.

I think he was talking about just the number of races. Granted I don't see it ever being remotely close considering most of these proposed races don't get past the proposal stage.

F1 couldn't support Nascar amount of races a season, moving around the world is far too much of a task with all the air freight, motorhomes and mini HQ they set up at each Grandprix, compared to just moving around the country with 2 Trucks going from race to race.

The calendar should be capped at twenty races. Ten of these should be fixed events, and the other ten rotated between venues, kind of like the Hockenheim-Nurburgring arrangement, but between nations.

as much as i would love to see more races, it wouldn't be fair to the team personal to have more then 20.

most of them would only see their family at most a month throughtout the year.

I'm not really sure what that has to do with my post, which was merely point out these proposed races don't get further than their initial press release showing interest.

Granted since you brought it up, it wouldn't be that impossible to add a few more events if they started earlier and cut the summer break (I personally think even 20 is too many races and would prefer around 17).

It's partially streets. Everything from the hairpin on the right up to the top-left corner is an existing dual carriageway - but going by satellite photos, it's pretty much brand-new. So I imagine that the surface would be a lot like Shanghai or Bahrain: purpose-built, but having had a few years under its belt to bed in.

F1 on a carriageway? That's something new.... wouldn't that be very bumpy though (at least that is what the freeways are like where I live).

That's because those roads have bedded down. A road's lifespan is measured in axles, with the planning designed to take in a certain volume of vehicles before it needs replacing or resurfacing as, over time, the weight of those cars compresses the road base, which leads to subsidence.

That and I just remembered that our freeways are concrete which might explain the bumpiness.

A draft 2015 calendar has been released. Mexico is the only major change, partnered with Austin. Interlagos is now a stand-alone event to accommodate it.

No India or New Jersey.

No you're not but the days of really great race tracks is well and truly over anyway, and there's no reason why a street circuit can't be a good circuit.

This could be the first time I've walked a lap of a Grand Prix circuit before it has even been built! I'm trying to overlay it with a proper map to see if where I've been from that.

Track layout looks interesting, the main streets of Piraeus can be very wide but from that proposed layout it's taking on board the very, very wide and flat passenger docks coupled with some arid land, but I think the upper left section might be pretty tight. To tie in with motorsport familiarity, I'd rather it be called the Acropolis Grand Prix.

It'd be a big boost for the Greco-Turkish rivalry, with Istanbul no longer on the calendar!
