The game is over 9Gb!

Well, it don't really make a s**t to me if it's on 2 disc or not to tell ya the truth. :D
once it's copied to my 120GB hard drive, the disc/disc's will likely not see the light of day again.

don't know how many have a HD or not, but it makes a huge amount of difference in GT3.
no more waiting for the game to load or loading between screens, races, etc.... everything is instantanious.
cuts way down on the waiting time & allows for way more driving time. 👍 👍

Confident it'll work with HDloader? :D

I have GT3 and Prologue on mine and the loading is nearly wiped out in GT3, less than half a second. 👍

Would be funny if I could get my old 10GB xbox hard drive working in the PS2. The irony ;) (Although I heard PS2 needs 40GB min)

:) Where do you get PS2 hard drives from in the UK? I've nver noticed any on sale...

I use a £55 120gb Maxtor drive you can buy for a PC. :)

I definately second those questions. If it works like that then I am going to go get me one sometime soon. Do they basically work like a huge memory card?

:) oh cheers. So where does this plug in, and does the PS2 just autodetect and then give you the option of saving to it?

Paul.

No you have to buy HDLoader or HDAdvance for the PS2. This will format the HDD and give you the option to Install your games.

Does it also let you save to it? I'm thinking it would, but not sure as I don't know anyone with an HDD.

ttc if you could give us full details on how you get this set up, I'm sure I would not be the only one who would be very, very appreciative.

A PS2 Game on a Dual Layer Disc is not that spectacular !!!

There has been a soccer game and one roll-play-game on a dual layer disc. I just can´t remember the names, but i will find out and post it !

Jedi2016
Burnable discs (DVD-R's and the like) don't have the capacity of a pressed disc. A pressed single-layer DVD (i.e. most PS2 games) can hold a full 4.7GB of data, although most games don't have this much information. Dual-layer discs (like most DVD movies) can hold a full 9.4GB, which as mentioned, is about a GB more than a burnable disc can hold, from what T5-R said. I don't have a DVD burner here, so I'll assume he's correct.

This does mean that GT4 will be that much harder to pirate.. hehe. Dual-layer burners are more expensive than single-layer burners, and the discs themselves are quite a bit more expensive. And if dual-layer DVD-R's only hold 8.5GB of data, than this disc may very well be uncopyable. And yes, they do pirate DVDs all the time, but they do so by recompressing the film to take up a smaller amount of disc space (by sacrificing a good deal of quality), so it can be burned onto a single-layer disc. Compressing video is one thing, you can't compress data that way, especially when it needs to spool from the disc in real-time. Most video games don't even use up a full one layer, so they're fairly easy to copy. Not so for GT4, apparently. Chalk one up for KY.. hehe. :)

Well GT4 will be harder to pirate in original format, but I bet people will create a 'rip' version that will fit on a standard DVD9 writable disc, perhaps even a standard DVD5 (if theres a load of video that can be got rid of). For instance I remember seeing a GT3 rip that would fit on a single CD, similarly to (for example) the BMW demo time limit remover. Still as someone else said, 9GB will kill anyones bandwidth!

as far as ive heard, PS3 will have Blue ray disks, about 50GB can be stored. The product is not yet been released.

But just think about it

For the guys using HDadvance:
DVD-9 Games

HDAdvance does not support any games on DVD-9 media. If you attempt to install a DVD-9 game it is likely that the installation will appear successful, but any attempt to actually run the game will most likely fail. Please make sure that your game disc is not DVD-9 before conversion.

The problem occurs when the Playstation tries to access data from the second layer of the disc. As there is no disc anymore when you copied the game to the HDD the PS2 generates an error and freezes.

I'll tell you how & where if you go down to the Honda plant there in Swindon & pick up a Civic Type R & ship it over to me!!

lol, J/K.... :)

this outfit is in Canada. they are who i got mine from.
you need the network adaptor, HD, & the HD Loader.
i think they sell like a whole package deal for everything you'll need. ConsoleSource.com

It will be interresting to see how to "back up" GT4. I hear that GTA:SA was a dual layer disk and couldnt be backed up but it backed up on the first try. ;)
The 700 cars so far was great news. Even more than 650. The article makes it sound like there will be even more than 700!

From my understanding GTA:SA isn't a DVD9 dual layer disc.

It's not memory, it's simply data storage. Game code, models, textures, AI subroutines, etc. 700+ cars and 50+ tracks, I'd estimate several GB right there, just in the geometry.

Nope just using WinHIIP alone wont cut it, because once you've iso'ed it HDD loader won't be able to switch layers on the file. I've got a tutorial for getting DVD-9 games onto the HDD and you have to basically get the files from both separate layers and put them into one big converted single layer iso file then you can use WinHIIP. I tried it with Xenosaga but it didn't seem to work, although I would try it again but it's a bit time consuming. So i'll wait untill i've got GT4 to try it again.

LoudMusic
Eh? Layers make no difference in ISO form. As far as I know. I mean, it's just more data.

Yes it does.

When you look at a dual layered iso in Apache it gives you the option to switch layers. So in terms of file systems think of it as a disc with two partitions. If you looked in the iso with winrar I don't think you'd see all the files on the disc just the ones that are contained on the first layer which is what HDD loader probably does. I've been playing around with this stuff for a while, because there are some homebrew patches for the Winning 11 series of games which entails you extracting and patching various bits and bobs.

@ Race Idiot:

Do you see any chance to backup the Gran Turismo 4 DVD-9 to the Playstation2 HDD then?

I have no idea, but it's one of the first things that i'll try when my copy arrives in the mail this December.

People claim that they have the Madden 2005 dual layer working. I still don't see why it would be such an issue.

Yes I have heard people say that they got DVD-9 Xenosaga working, but i've tried the normal WinHIIP way and the convert it into a big single layer iso file way and neither have worked. I'm not saying that it doesn't work. But I haven't managed to get it to work and after looking at the structure of the disc I just can't see just ripping it and putting it on the HDD working. I can't remeber where I got the guide but i'm sure there is a web link in the docs on my home pc.
