I think that its hinting at a Japanese folklore when someone pulls on a kimono during the women's birthday, she will spin and every 360 degrees she achieves. She turns a year older.

The problem with ZUN doing everything is that the art looks like this:

Are you referring to GENCO? That is the only company on the production committee on all four of those shows going off of ANN (Unless their encyclopedia is failing again, and missing important info). All four of those shows had different animation studios, and the animation studio typically doesn't have much to do with how the show will turn out in terms of non-visual quality.

I got the info off MAL, might explain some ambiguity in my research.
And besides, it's all about what people think about the anime, not necessarily how good or bad it is.
