^ Um, I don't think Cowboy Bebop was awesome at all nor at my Top 20 list. I see it as somewhat overrated....

BT -> Seriously, the series didn't grabbed me at all. I just like the way Faye looks and thats about it.

Somewhat overrated? Yeah, sure. But does it still kick ass? Definitely.

Besides, anything that is considered great could be deemed overrated, because chances are there's something that is nearly as good as it but disproportionately more obscure.

Well, I think I've said this before, but the greatest thing about anime is its diversity. They make anime for everybody, and it's not surprising that what some people love others can't stand.

For me Cowboy Bebop is on par with the original Ghost in the Shell and Samurai Champloo and (non anime) the Firefly series. That's the kind of stuff I get into the most, edgy, fun, beautiful to look at (at least for its time), and somewhat thoughtful/serious/dramatic. On the other hand, too much romance or fanservice tends to put me off an anime, though some can be great if it's balanced with story and character development, etc. But that's just me, so don't worry, no flames coming your direction VB!

By the way, what are some of the anime that make your top 20? Any general characteristics?

To me, a good anime should have:
-A story that either takes place in a completely fictional setting where you would never find on the face of this earth OR it stays as closely bound to it (i.e. Slice of Life). This is what makes anime great; we can either go all out in a fanatical world that can never happen irl, or we can easily relate to it being so close to everyday life.
-Each episode needs to leave you wanting more, so no filler random sidejob irrelevant bs. If there's a level of mystery, it should be challenging enoguh that we need to think about it, but not so deep that it becomes overwhelming.
-A pace that doesn't take 6 episodes to establish the main conflict the protagonist struggles with or every major character (if it does have a storyline that is).
-a protagonist who becomes stronger to overcome that conflict. <- Cliche
-Absurb breakthroughs in advancing a story (i.e. Victorique magically knowing what happens at a certain location without having been there at all).
-Little-to-no obvious cheap tricks, like fanservice.
-Humour: Not required but very much welcome.
-If it's going to be an Action-based show, it better damn well try and be original.

Having said that, my top 5 currently would be (excluding movies):
-Clannad Series
-Death Note
-Majutsu no Index
-Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
-Kanon

I also like Soul Eater, but I haven't watched enough to give it an honest rating

What do I like in my anime? That's a tough one... I like a lot of different anime for different reasons.

I do prefer my anime to have strong storylines. There are some exceptions to this... Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Panic, etc. They have storylines, which is something, but they are far from the greatest or most original stories ever concieved. If an anime doesn't have a good story, it better have some other damn good qualities. Cowboy Bebop for instance has very likeable characters that strike an emotional chord in a way that few anime series could even dream of (even the secondary characters!), awesome action, and great music.

I also like anime that just simply messes with your head. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost Hound, Boogiepop Phantom, etc.

My top 5 anime series would be:
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Les Miserables Shojo Cosette
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Monster

a buddy's been begging me to watch Lain, but I could never find a place to watch. Bet it's good, but i bet it won't be one of my personal favourites.

Likable characters(this is a must for me with all anime. if I don't like the characters or dont feel anything towards them, the show will just piss me off.)

Does what it says on the tin(eg; if it's a comedy, it better well make me laugh. If it's a romance, then it better be original, or twist it about so it feels original... Looking at you Toradora!, as a brilliant example)

Pacing. Now this, this is what most shows lack, is it really that ****ing hard to do, seriously though, is it? eh? eh? Again lets use Rom/coms as an example, Kimi ni Todoke is total trash in my opinion, one second they're getting on great then boom 10 episodes of boredom as they're now scared to look at each other, fair enough, I understand what they're trying to do, but at least make the episodes ****ing watchable, my god! Looking at shows such as Clannad, Toradora and Lovely Complex, who pull this off wonderfully.

Ideally, I would like more that one protagonist, luckily this isnt a huge problem as most shows have at least two, but I'd still rather have 3,4,5 or 6. Durarara, Baccano, Clannad, Toradora, Pandora Hearts, Code Geass, are good examples of what I'm trying to get at. (This going to start to look like im Just naming my favourite shows, but actually Durarara and Baccano aren't up there with my favourites, although they are good shows, very good actually.

Decent animation, none of this xxxHOLiC crap, how tall can people actually be?

Unneeded fanservice, HOTD, what is this I don't even...

I'm leaving out obvious things here btw, like good story, depth in mystery shows etc etc, but im sure you guys have gettin' the jist of what I like and what is need to keep me entertained while watching certain genres. Sorry for my huge rant.

Edit; looks like we're telling each other our top 5, here goes;

Clannad AS
Toradora
Pandora Hearts
Code Geass
Lovely Complex
Death Note
Darker than Black(first season, obvious reasons are obvious)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Welcome to the NHK
Black Lagoon

There's 10 for you lucky people :boggled:

I lul'd at those people who like the Afro Samurai's art style.

all the proportions on the figures are terribly obscure it's almost a joke.. Really never liked Gonzo for that.

a buddy's been begging me to watch Lain, but I could never find a place to watch. Bet it's good, but i bet it won't be one of my personal favourites.

Lain's good, but pretty freakin' weird. And the pace is quite slow. So, uh, be prepared for that.

How slow we talking here? Naruto-slow?

I don't watch Naruto.

It's only 13 episodes. There's absolutely zero action or comedy though, and even very little dialog. It's mostly just weird, in a love-it or hate-it kind of way. :p

This is how an anime thread should be going.

I agree with what you guys say about what you want from your shows. Story and pacing are the two biggest things. I like my shows to have a story that ends. It's why I haven't watched Naruto or Bleach and don't intend to.

Sometimes I'll watch a fanservice heavy anime to take a break between shows I really want to watch. However I know what I'm getting into when I do that. Fanservice is moving to the forefront it seems these days and why IMO the best anime is from the late '90s. I love the art style (something I also feel is important) from shows from that era. There are some new shows out that are very good but the anime market seems to be too crowded with crap now.

Top 10:

Neon Genesis Evangelion (I've seen it countless times. My all time favorite show and I also love the Rebuild movies that are coming out)
Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Trigun
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (it's not finished but I actually like where it's heading. It feels refreshing to me)
Tenchi Muyo (one of the first ones I ever watched so it holds a special place to me :))
Blue Submarine No.6
Code Geass
Death Note
Black Lagoon

It's got to be Miyazaki's work for the best Artwork...of all time.
But I'm still digging Samurai Girls' as well.

Stuff from the 90's don't look all that fantastic to me, but watching Initial D, they do a lot less chibi-ish giant-eyed character with huge bangs and absurb hair you can't get irl without looking like a goof draw characters more realistically, which is nice, but not what I liked anime for.

I'm was really surprised at how my bebop downloads turned out, really good quality and very sharp for 90's animations, I'll take some screens if you like. Think you'd probably die with shock due how to good the animation actually is :p

Edit; is MAL down for everyone?

Couldn't Open Salve Database?!?! O Noezzzzzzzzz

Hatcha, are you always on MAL?

Probably weren't the greatest screenshots, but keep in mind how old this program is. Compare it with Outlaw Star, for example.
