Would Gundam be "Gundam" without space battles? What makes up Gundam as a series?
There are some Gundam series that don't involve space battles, I'm sure.

They do fare well with on-earth battles imo.

Well, from what I gather, Gundam is about these key topics;

  • The concept of war and peace, and how does it affect one's life;
  • Psychological problems and personal issues;
  • The notion of what makes a human whole, and where the line between humans and "insert specific Gundam show's race here" is drawn;
  • Giant freakin' robots beating the tar out of each other with lasers, swords or any other given type of gun.
There are Gundam shows which spend a lot of time developing episodes on Earth alone, such as Gundam X and Turn A Gundam, although those shows aren't as popular as shows which spend a lot of time with space battles (i.e. Z Gundam and of course the original show). Gundam can be Gundam without space battles, just watch 08th MS Team for that sort of thing.

SVX
Shinobu during an episode in Second Season though...

But this isn't the picture you originally posted, is it?
Also she can only be like this if she sucks a crap ton of blood IIRC.

What makes up Gundam?
I can answer that in one word. Filler.

No really the amount of filler episodes and the super-slow pacing ruin most of them. All of the old ones seem to be 50 episodes long, which is a turnoff for me now. Still thinking I might watch Turn A Gundam though...

Well, aren't most 50-odd episodic shows cursed by that monster known as "filler" regardless of being Gundam or not? It's diffcult to keep a story going if you don't interrupt things from time to time in order to let the story catch up and advance properly. And with most Gundam shows easily surpassing the 50-episode barrier, it's a tricky venture for them indeed...

Turn A is an interesting show, with the Sid Meier ties and such (he was responsible for the design of the titular mecha, the Turn A Gundam), but it's also a tricky show to begin your Gundam viewing, because the story is a blend of every single thing which has happened in most Gundam timelines and creates a whole new world detracted from each and every other Gundam show. It works somehow, but you'll have to study some things if you want to understand the show well, in my hones opinion. Something like Gundam X, which has 39 episodes (due to several issues that affected the show's popularity at the time, such as the public being worn out of Earth-based Gundam series), may work better for you if you think 50 episodes is a hard thing to stomach.

That or you could watch OVAs such as Unicorn, which is surprisingly good. Just don't get too close to shows such as SEED Destiny or F91, those are the worst hours of the Gundam franchise...

Gundam = My friends are that ship, therefore I must pilot that Gundam. License to kill.

I thought the first F91 was alright, the others... Eeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhh.

SEED, I don't know, I thought it was one of the worst entries in the Gundam series. I don't know, I just didn't like Kira.

Super Best Friends kind of nailed it on the head for me regarding SEED and SEED Destiny.

Oreimo Season 2 why am I watching you and actually chuckling.....

Ayase needs to see the light from Kirino.

Kirino still needs an open hand klap.

Saori looks pretty good.

That is all.

So, watched up to episode 16 of Evangelion today, because, you know, 20 years and all. God, I forgot how good 15 and 16 are. 15 is such an excellent little piece of relatively lighthearted mundane drama and then 16 punches you in the face with the angel battle.

How did you muster up the sanity to be able to watch NGE up to episode 16 in one sitting?

Teach me...

It seems that in Yugioh ARC-V, there are now 2 Main Villains working on their own separate goals as we found out about the leader of Securitys true nature and reason.

I just hope down the line, they don't go for the cliche of having the 2 entitys team up to take down the protagonists. I would love Security vs. Duel Academy.

Speaking of NGE, I have now finished the anime and the official manga series. I feel that the anime has a larger scale of WTF-factor than the manga.

The manga is much more clear and concise narrative wise, but loses much of what the anime had going for it. The editing, the washed out pastel colour palette, and most of all the use of sound all really contribute to the sense that all of the characters are trapped in purgatory throughout NGE, but the manga has none of those things.

Unless we're talking about episode 10. Episode 10 is just mediocre.

The original series is so much better than the Rebuild movies. Sure, the animation may not be all pretty and amazing, but god, does it do better everywhere else. I can't even criticise it for making less sense than the Rebuilds, because so far it doesn't, and unless 3.0 + 1.0 is nothing but exposition, they probably don't stand a chance of catching up.

I understand the original anime is superior (according to some of you), but the RoE movies are what I have. Granted, I watched the first one and it felt rushed plot wise, but I enjoyed it.

The first Rebuild of Evangelion film is an abridged version of the first six episodes with really nice animation.

The second Rebuild of Evangelion film is a mish mash of other stuff from the series taken out of context in a way which is entertaining enough to watch if you've already seen Neon Genesis Evangelion (mainly because of the really pretty animation and the expansion of Shinji and Rei's relationship), but which can't exactly be called high art.

The third Rebuild of Evangelion film makes barely any sense whatsoever and has a plot that seems to be heading for the biggest dead end in history but it has GLORIOUS SHINJI X KAWORU YAOI PIANO PLAYING WITH THE BEST ANIMATION ANYONE HAS EVER SEEN so nobody cares.

I remember asking this in art class a while back I was told to look at real life examples.

I would've said the exact same thing. Try to avoid using cartoon drawings as a resource to learn how to draw stuff. If you want to learn most effectively, draw from real life. Once you get how the real stuff works, you'll better understand how you can go about stylizing things such as creating caricatured faces and fabric folds.

Nice of you to keep bringing in drawings. I'm still not motivated enough to draw yet. I've had an incomplete drawing sit for 3 weeks now.

I remember asking this in art class a while back I was told to look at real life examples. Namely how your own clothes fold in certain areas.

In the piece you've posted now, I'd say maybe focus around the shoulders and armpits, maybe even the collar but since that's a tight, form/figure-fitting attire it's best not to overdo it. Maybe with baggy clothes it really shows.

Establishing the form and perspective of the ribcage and the overlying muscle masses is still super difficult and I guess trying to put clothing over it makes it show even more haha.

Most of my studies are from real life or from anatomy books, but I've mostly just been doing de-stress drawings lately and they just default to this cartoony style. Thanks for the advice though!

As for the motivation thing I feel your pain. There are definitely days (weeks and months even) where the motivation to draw just isn't there. But I try to follow Sycra's rule of drawing at least one thing everyday and that generally helps cut through it.

Edit: I'm starting to think this is the wrong thread for this stuff :lol:

I want to take back what I said before about Parasyte, I finished it and it turned to be a very suspenseful and beautifully written story. I cried so much on 2 occasions, though not as much as HxH Chimera Ant arc.

Though I'll have to disagree on what a few people say about it. It is no where near scary or disturbing, it really doesn't get me terrified at all. It isn't even gross as well, I am able to watch it without any feelings in the scenes.

Now the big question is, where would I rank it on with all the anime I watched (currently at 9):
1. Hunter x Hunter
2. Yugioh 5Ds / Yugioh ARC-V
3. Pokemon
4. Parasyte
5. Yugioh Zexal / Yugioh GX / Yugioh DM
6. No Game No Life
7. Bayblade Metal Saga (it was so bad, it was good IMO)
8. Attack on Titan
9. School Days

Watched the entire season of Gakkou Gurashi!, and I'll tell you what...that first episode was all cheery...until the end of the episode and it's like: "Surprise mo********." :eek: Turned out to be quite good. I mean, it's another "generic" zombie thing, but it was pretty good.
