THIS MONTH'S THEME

Back to the 80s' with this one. Last LEC's winner @Mugo chose this theme that was initially proposed by @Racerx_34 via the Suggestion From. Let's hear what he had to say back then:

"Imagine a game set from 1980 to 1990. JGTC, IMSA, WEC. You're the team manager you get to pick any manufacturer that competed in that time. Your entry must meet the mandatory decal requirements of whatever Championship you enter but after that you have free reign."

CARS:
  • all period correct cars

BODY PARTS / WIDEBODY:
  • Road cars must have racing car mods

LIVERIES:
  • Original liveries for a 1980-1990 race car

UNIQUE RESTRICTIONS:
  • Must meet the selected series' and year's mandatory decals and number boards

BONUS PICTURE SETTINGS:
  • Garage or Track shots

USER MADE DECALS:
  • Allowed

GENERAL COMPETITION RULES

ENTRY SUBMISSION

  • The only way you can take part is to be a member of the GTPlanet forums. If you haven't created your account yet, click here.
  • Mark your FINAL ENTRY clearly, with red text.
  • Unsure how to? Copy and paste the following: FINAL ENTRY
  • One entry per user. It must be your own work, and never previously used in a competition.
  • You may change your entry once. Do it clearly; edit out your previous entry, and either post the new one in a new reply, or in place of the original.
  • Do not post "Honourable Mentions" or outtakes - just your Final Entry, that's all.
  • Absolutely no entries which utilise edited/hacked file saves.
  • Winner gets to choose the following month’s theme.
  • The organisers may ask for the original image/livery and it must be submitted if so.
  • It's recommended to share the original livery online (in-game) to prove it’s your work.

ENTRY PRESENTATION
  • All images shall have preview images which may not exceed 640 pixels in either direction (main and bonus pictures).
  • You have to post two main pictures of your entry using the mandatory location and settings as shown in the quote below.
  • You are allowed to post two bonus pictures in a spoiler (
...
) with free location and settings (unless the unique restrictions of the week’s theme specify something else).
  • You have to make one post with ONLY the set allowed number of pictures and the FINAL ENTRY (see above) mark. If you want to add precisions/background story/links, you are allowed to double-post under your entry, but please put all additional images in a spoiler. The best way to do it will be to "reply" to your own post.
  • It is recommended you host your image either here on GTPlanet (via the Media section), or on Flickr
  • Not sure how to submit your image? Here's a guide for both methods mentioned above.
  • Do not attach your phots directly to your entry post.
  • A preview image must be representative of the full-size image. Do not add effects to it.
  • Please use a clickable-preview to full-size, not a separate text link for it; it makes poll creation much easier!
  • No post-game editing of any entry image is allowed.
  • Mark your entry with which platform you're on and which mode you're using, whether it’s taken on PS4 Base, PS4 Pro, PS5 Raytracing or PS5 Framerate.

MANDATORY PICTURES
  • You have to post a front and a rear quarter view of your car:
    • Mandatory Scape: S&Company East, Saitama, Japan (scape number 5)
    • Focal Length: ~80mm ±5mm
    • Aperture: f5.6 or f8.0
    • Shutter Speed: 1/1 Second
    • Exposure Correction: +0.5 to +1.0
  • Do not use any Filters or Effects at all and only the camera setting above within the allowed limits; the pictures are supposed to be as equal as possible for all entries and not give anyone who is a bit more savvy with the Scapes Camera an advantage! Try to stay as close as possible to how the video shows the shot to be taken!

NOTE: if you have previously entered, just go to Scapes > My Library > click your previous entry > Open Scapes > change car to the new entry, refocus and snap a new photo. No need to reposition the camera/car unless its proportions are wildly different.

Please, ensure you read and understand all requirements for this competition. Failure to follow the rules may result in disqualification. If you have questions, start a convo with me, Matski or any other participant you feel comfortable reaching out to.

PLEASE NOTE: Repeat offenders will be disqualified. If your entry doesn’t match the rules you will be made aware of it at least once, so please keep an eye out for any notifications reaching your profile.

DEADLINE

  • Must meet the selected series' and year's mandatory decals and number boards

That makes it hard...where can I find out, what decals where mandatory in what year and what series ?
The number boards should be no problem but everything else for racing series some 30 and more years ago seems to me to be quite arcane knowledge

Your entry must meet the mandatory decal requirements of whatever Championship you enter but after that you have free reign."

That sentence implicates a rather free choice of the series.

Would be great to have a confirmation.

Thank you - and great theme, really like it.
"Imagine a game set from 1980 to 1990. JGTC, IMSA, WEC."
I would like to have DTM allowed, too.

I’ve been doing some heavy research about on 1980’s IMSA series. Specifically RS. it appears that many teams still used cars from the mid-late 70’s even into the mid 80’s. Or at least they used cars where the body style didn’t change much if it all from the mid to late 70’s.

Is this a hard line on 1980-1990 cars?

Either way I’m good an a few cars to choose from. Definitely going to have to make some period correct decals, though. I’ll share those that I do make for others to use.

I'll admit it's kind of a narrow window but it is restricted to 1980 - 1990 cars.
Sponsors have to be from that era too. No Red Bull or Monster liveries on DTM BMWs.

But Red Bull has been around since the 80's. Making a car look era appropriate despite what we think of as a modern brand can be part of a fun challenge no?

Bonus points for a Jolt Cola livery.
They exist since the late 80s but I wouldn't associate Red Bull with Motorsport Teams until the mid 90s, if they did appear as a driver's personal sponsor or secondary sponsor somewhere then fine but not as the title sponsor.

Edit: You know what. Go for it.
You are technically correct so while I don't like the idea of an 80s Red Bull livery they are period correct,
even if for me they make the livery immediately more 90s like.

FINAL ENTRY

FRONT

PS5 Raytracing
My entry is for the 1984 IMSA RS Class Champion Spark Plug Challenge.

The team is Dr. Enuf. Driven by Monte Harris (Monte Harris is not a real driver, I just lifted the name from a character in one of my favorite book series I’ve read this year. The Glacier Mystery series by Christine Carbo).

Dr. Enuf has been around since 1949. It is produced by Tri-City Beverage in East Tennessee. The same company who created Mountain Dew, but later sold the rights to Pepsi.

For the Class Requirements, the best I can tell, anyway, the usual required sponsors are: Champion, Earl’s, 76 Gasoline, Penzzoil Motor Oil, and Goodyear Tires. This one was a little tough, because it seems some races did not require certain sponsors, while others did.
Additional Class Requirements: Each car must display ‘Champion Spark Plug Challenge’ on the windshield banner. The car number, class sticker, series sticker, and driver name must be displayed on the door ONLY. The car number should also be displayed on the lower passenger side of the hood.

I made all of the Dr. Enuf logos and slogan decals in illustrator.

I also had to make the Champion Spark Plug Series windshield banner (This one was easy).

The hard one was the series sticker for the door. There were actually decent reference pictures, but not that could easily be image traced with good results in illustrator, so I had to painstakingly redraw it and try and keep enough detail and keep it under the 15kb limit.

The last decal that needed to be created was the IMSA RS Class decal. (Also easy).

You can find all of these by searching ‘IMSA’ or ‘champion’ in decals.
