The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

I'd have to say the opposite about Leventis, he's a safe and rather quick set of gentleman driver hands compared to Pickett.

It's kind of sad that the only reason it is going to be at Le Mans is because after its Indy car failure, the designers need something to fall back on! The only reason HPD is running it is because they want some coverage, and I bet it doesn't even cost half as much as a good LMP1 program. In HPD's case is to have a good program and get their asses handed to them in Europe.......again

Really only gets it because no-one else came up with anything like it....

Give me 20million and I can design a racer that looks like a conventional closed top P1, weighs half as much, goes the distance and uses half as much fuel whilst running a high downforce/low drag setup.

If I'd give you 20 million I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have half a decent car at the track. It seems to me you are forgetting what it even costs to develop the kind of technology that is involved in sportscar racing.

I mean, look at last year's Audi R18. It isn't exactly a pretty looking car, but how much closer to a fighter jet can a racing car become?

Judging from the above quoted post you seem to think these projects are just sportscars with a V8, weighing not more than 900kg, and have a fin on the back.

nitrorocks

Highcroft is what you are thinking of not HPD...

And no, I don't think protos are just V8 powered 900kg race cars....I know exactly what goes into them and I would not have given that figure if I didn't know what I'm talking about.

That's what I meant. :( I feel stupid

Really? Pickett's has not had a single driver error accident in his alms forray . (Rs spyder accident at mid Ohio does not count since it was mechanical failure)

Leventis binned the car in the gravel trap at '10 Le Mans while leading class by a couple laps.
He then destroyed half the car last year in the warm up session for Spa 6 hour),
He then totalled the pole sitting car again heavily at Le Mans practice/qualm session a few weeks later.

Are we talking about the same Leventis? You can have Leventis, I'll have Pickett. The diff between Pickett and Leventis is that Pickett will drive within his means. Just look back to Lime Rock in the rs spyder. One of his best drives. Leventis is young gentleman driver who tries to go beyond what he is capable of and wrecks the car.and he's not quick either.

He's quicker than Pickett however....

This year apart from his Spa mistake he's been alot more solid and consistent with his driving and has really improved compared to previous seasons. Either way I just wish I had the money behind me like Pickett and Leventis do

So are Muscle Milk really not considering Le Mans at all? I suspect they have sought an entry spot because Muscle Milk does have a European Market and I imagine Graf and Luhr want to run there as well to compete against the other WEC HPD's

ALMS has added VIR's Grand West Course to the 2012 line-up scheduled for September 13-15.

Not sure if they have an auto entry or not to be honest, I know Dyson has 2 but don't know about Muscle Milk.

I'm excited for this. Growth of any kind for ALMS is good and I welcome many more endurances. In fact, I would love a good even mix of endurance and sprints, or even a heavier leaning endurance schedule, assuming the competitor teams are welcoming of it.

And then on a personal note, it is almost exactly the same driving time from me as Atlanta, so it means I may now have a backup race if Petit Le Mans dates don't work for me (It sometimes gets scheduled on my Dad's birthday). We were turned off by Mid-Ohio to the point where we didn't give it heavy consideration on the occasions we couldn't make Atlanta. Another relatively close (8 hours driving) option is huge for us.

You'd be surprised. VIR has held the Rolex Sports Cars for the past 10 seasons.

This is true. Although, the ALMS cars will be on a different layout than the Grand-Am cars, the track has seen plenty of racing.

According to ALMS this is the first time a professional sports car series has been on that course. Just like Grand-Am will be the first sports car series to use the MotoGP layout of the Indy Road Course.

Any Ferrari Challenge or Supercar Challenge (PS3) veteran knows how VIR is an awesome track. It'll be great to watch Sports Cars racing there. 👍
