Right. I went over some of my music, and although I'm still on the A, I have a few suggestions. Keep in mind, these are the bands I like (they're in my permanent collection):

- Adagio: Similar to Dream Theater but heavier, with harder riffs and more double bass drums.
- Age of Silence: More melodic than Adagio and it also has more than one singer, although they're all male.
- Anata: Dark/Black metal but with no grunting. Actually, with no vocals, it's instrumental.
- Andromeda: Similar to Dream Theater but with much more use of keyboards and less instrumental parts of the songs.
- Augury: Dark/Black metal. Male and female vocals. The woman sings normally while the guy mainly grunts.
- Ayreon: Very clean and melodic male voice. Thinking back, I think you recommended this band before.

Hope this short list helps... I'll let you know of other bands once I get on the B and further.

So far Andromeda and Adagio are pretty good. Ayreon...some of their stuff is OK, but I don't really know, I think there is too much emphasis on the vocals. And it sounds weird...yeah weird.

The other stuff on this list, I couldn't find.

Check out the Prog Thread, in the coming days, as I plan on posting a huge review of genres and sub-genres with their best bands... and the most accesible ones too :)

Has anyone given the new Shadows Fall a listen yet? I was wanting to get it, but I havent heard any of the new material, and i havent heard any opinions.

Edit: I just clicked onto the Shadows Fall Website and I'm listening to "In Effigy" Sounds pretty good, but I cant hear anything that sets this song apart from any off "The War Within" does anyone know how the rest of the album sounds?

I believe I got that album, listened to the first few songs and deleted it... all in about 1.72 minutes

It can also be because it's not my type of metal.

For Woman Fronted Metal, try Arch Enemy, the song, My Acopalypse is good although theres a strange effect on the voice.

My favourite metal bands are Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold mainly for their 6 minuite peices of perfection.

Yeah...if you like death metal...

Checked out the new Evergrey disc today, 'Monday Morning Apocalypse.' It's Evergrey. The next step from Inner Circle I suppose, but not as good as the earlier stuff. Seems to be more pop-metal broken hearted, good-bye to my girl, type stuff now.

I have "Inner Circle" It's ok, but I havent really listened to enough of their music to make an opinion of the band.

Sweet. A metal thread. Joining GTP's forums seems like an even better idea now... :P

I'm into just about every form of metal. Mostly death metal. The progressive stuff is a close second. Though from reading a few pages of the thread, it doesn't seem like too many people are into the brutal stuff... which I can understand. But eh. :P

It's going to be kind of hard to find death metal fans here. Most of the metal-likers are into basic prog (Dream Theater and the like), -core bands and a bit of the harder side of metal, like older Metallica.

Death metal is one of my personal favourite kinds of metal, but that's just me ;)

Damn. What is it that turns people off from it? Any ideas/thoughts?

Immaturity and gruesomeness in the lyrics... repetitive music... lack of apparent talent... seems noisy to the uninitiated. Take your pick ;)

I personally love it, but it's mostly because it's what I used to listen to when I was a kid... and it kind of reminds me of the time. But then again, I listen to early-to-mid-90s mostly and a bit of the better underground bands of today.

anyone heard the upcoming All That Remains album "The Fall of Ideals". Possibly one of the better metal releases of the year
I'll have to check it out. They're one of the rare metalcore bands I can listen to. 👍

I myself am a huge melodeath fan, but only have a handful of death metal stuff. And most of those are from death-turned-melodeath bands (ala Hypocrisy) I just got the whole discography of. I find death metal too blunt and boring with just mindless drum beats and monotone vocals (from what I've heard), whereas melodeath has much better composition and variety IMO.

I will say Bloodbath are pretty damn good though.

I guess it's just personal taste, then.. Bloodbath are a great band - both of their lineups - though, which bands are you listening to with monotone vocals?! :indiff: There are some great vocalists out there. Then again, I guess it's personal taste again. :P

My opinion is based primarily on early Hypocrisy and early Amorphis material. Although I have heard albums from a few other death metal outfits, such as Kataklysm and Bolt Thrower. I don't mind growlers (Mikael Akerfeldt is probably my all-time favourite metal vocalist), but with death metal they don't seem to alter their voice much. It's just the same deep tone the whole time, no variation. The same goes for the rhythm - just repetive drumming and fast riffing. No variation again.

I'm open to recommendations though. ;)

On another note, the new All That Remains album was pitiful. This new album mixes way too many clean vocals that it sounds like its forced to be there. Granted metalcore doesn't leave much room for originality, but this new album just sounds like every other damn band in the genre. 👎

And recommendations you'll have! ;) As far as Kataklysm and Bolt Thrower go, their vocals are pretty stock-standard - with the exception of Kataklysm's first vocalist, Sylvain Houde - who was an absolute monster, in my opinion... though, his vocals are unusual - they're completely out of sync with the music, really. Not for everyone.

As for recommendations, my favourites would probably be Nile. They ARE heavy on the blast-beats concerning drums (so nothing different from your usual 200+ beats per minute smack-the-drums fest) but they use several vocalists (all growlers but different tone) and some wicked Egyptian overtones and lyrics (not to mention some crazy guitar wizardry) to liven things up. Check out any album of theirs I guess, other than Black Seeds of Vengeance. The mix is pretty bad on that so everything is almost inaudible.

Other than them... as Time_Attack mentioned, Behemoth are pretty awesome. I haven't heard their earlier stuff though, which I hear is pretty black metal-focused. If you're looking for varied vocals, Australia's own Psycroptic have some weird stuff going on in that area.

I'm making this post too big so to finish things off I'd probably recommend Cryptopsy. Their music makes my head spin. Once Was Not or None So Vile are their best.

And yeah, Mikael owns. :P Did you see Opeth on their last tour here?

That album (STD) has had me addicted for over a year and it shows no sign of stopping. I can't wait for their next release 👍
