I don't like Rap because I'm a fan of music. To me, Rap isn't music. Rap is Rap. Give me real guitars, drums and bass' over a synthesizer, a DJ and a guy walking around on stage "dancing" like a moron, wearing clocks around his neck and creating a new form of language of which he can only understand.

Fo' shizzle? Tell me why people have embraced this crap. It isn't language. It's a lazy form of commercialism. Why don't you create good music, instead of corny, moronic slang. There is no talent in most of today's Rap. I can see talent in Rappers like Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony, because they're fast, and being able to spit out the lyrics at that speed I'll admit is quite talented.

Look at songs like Snoop Dogg - Drop It Like It's Hot or whatever the hell it's called. Where's the talent or effort in that? Let's break down the song:

  • Two guys singing the same lyrics over and over again, except with a few different word-variations.
  • Drum-beat in the background, and just before the "chorus", it rips off a section from a song off of the movie Scarface.
  • Video Clip: Two guys standing around some "pimped-out ride" with a bunch of chicks shaking their asses behind them for the entire clip.

Hhh. Please.

Yeah, if rap was that easy to make, we'd all be famous by now. It's funny how the people who are insulting rap are usually the ones with absolutely no knowledge about the genre. Just like any genre, there's always going to be some groups/artists that suck, but there's also the ones with an incredible amount of talent. Hell, there's plenty of rock that's just as bad as some of the worst rap out there. Every genre of music has their overproduced garbage.

It really bugs me how some people, usually the die hard "rock" fans, always get on their high horse about rap sucking because there's no electric guitar. Honestly, who the **** cares, music is still music whether it has an electric guitar or not. As emad said, there are artists (such as the roots) who refuse to play without a band.

It's been said here before, and I'll say it again - Nobody should put down an entire genre of music, it's just plain ignorant.

Most of the music produced by Dan The Automator

A good list to start with, in addition to those.

Public Enemy are legendary, I can't believe I forgot them ;).
KRS One is good, but his style is a bit harsh for people new to rap
Mos Def is pretty damn good.
Not a big fan of Beastie boys but they're still alright
And of course, The Roots - they're style is too unique to leave out :)

You know Mos Def is playing Ford Prefect in the film version of Hitchikers Guide to the galaxy? I heard he's one cool frood who knows where his towel is!

We all know that there's no real answer. It depends on personal preference.

Rap pwns me though and I can't stand listening to rock.

I hate modern rap. There's just so much unoriginality. Every rap film clip I see involves a riced up car with 17" chrome dubs in the background and like, 10 half naked chicks dancing around the rapper. The lyrics are the same old garbage over and over. But the thing that annoys me most is, they actually make money off this tripe?!

Anyway, I can appreciate old skool rap. At least it was something new and fresh back then. That's not to say I like it though - Rap/Hip Hop/RnB in general just isn't my cup of tea. But I absolutely hate modern rap.

...especially nu metal bands.

I've never seen a rice car in a rap video, unless you call an Escalade with 20's rice. The lyrics are always different. I find it much better than listening to a man with hair upto his knees screaming his head off. That's not music.

As my signature say:
"Any man who can hitch the length of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still know where his towel is is clearly a man to be reckoned with" - The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

I nabbed the trailer for the film and it looked great and I was expecting to be dissapointed. Although i'm taking this thread wildy off tangent.

I've heard the "Black Cop" and something else from him, very talented rapper. I forgot to mention the Beastie Boys in my post, but I love how they mix the Alternative Rock or Techno with Rap in some of their songs. 👍

I have to admit, I try my very hardest to like some of every type of music. Mostly I succeed. To split hairs I guess I'd have to say I like hiphop but hate rap, assuming I'm using the terms correctly.

The real problem with rap is that 98% of it is so self-referential. It's so inbred and deliberately exclusive that unless you're really into it it all sounds totally repetitious. I usually listen to the college radio station and so I've heaard quite a surprising amount of non- or semi-commercial rap for a 40 year old white guy. I don't usually have a problem with the music itself (and yes, it is music). What bores me silly almost instantly is all the posing and posturing. I really don't have the patience or interest to listen to 90 minutes of egos, attitudes, and putdowns set to a sequenced drum beat. I mean, there's only so much you can say about your penis size or your bankroll before you lose my attention.

Think about it. Imagine if the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had spent 5 years doing nothing but writing songs about how good they were and how the other band sucked. That would get awfully dull awfully damn fast.

The other thing that annoys me is that not one current artist seems to be able to do a song these days without "featuring" some other artist that they want to give a break to or get a break from. Again, it gets dull.

I agree 100% 👍
Can't stand any kind of rap at all.

I couldn't agree more!

Rap music promotes gang violence and highers everyones expectations of trying to be a PIMP and have lots of HO'S and KILL PEOPLE WITH A NINE (9mm Gun). Rap music is the type of drivvle that is defacing proper music, and degrading the world into an eternal idiotic cess-pit, full of violence and overall crap-ness...

This is exactly how I feel also. All rap is the same thing and it all sounds terrible to me.

I have to be honest. I actually like about 3 of Ludacris's songs. But I will NEVER buy a full album. Becuase rap is just rehashed over and over. I think rap music is "For whom the bell tolls". Just like grunge and hair metal, Rap has ran its course.

This is just my opinion, of course, but I like both metal and rap. Hell, I even like classic stuff, like Van Halen and Led Zeppelin. I even like Bach and Chopin. Why can't we all just... get along?

Man, I'd buy a rap album if the whole album had good beat overall; if not I won't buy it. Likewise, I'd buy a metal album if the whole album had a good feel to it. That's all there is to it.

EDIT: Had to fix grammar.

I am the same way. I like many types of music. Anything from Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Bach Beethoven Lizst, Motown, Bluegrass, and the list could go on. There are certain rap songs that I like but overall it's not something I'd want to listen too all the time.

i can tolerate rap. theres a few songs that are acceptable although iv only heard mainstream stuff im sure like every other music styles the underground stuff is better but i never go lookin for it. ok so most the stuff i like is rock but i do give the other genres a chance and respect em for what theyr doing even if i dont like it, or meet in the middle - rage against the machine for example :D 👍

Old-school rap (i.e., Run-DMC, Afrika Bambaataa, etc.) = Good.
Modern rap (i.e., Ja Rule, Chingy, Ludacris, etc.) = S***house.

Reason : modern rappers just sample the good music and screw the crap out of it (except for Ja Rule, who sampled Toto and made it worse).

My opinion, take it or leave it.

Well i think Jimmy Enslashay and Duke got it in one. I really hate rap because its all stupid black people chattin aload of crap about been a pimp and their hoes and shootin' someone in the gettho wiv their 9mm. All their videos r jus the same wiv stupid sluts dancin showin their asses.

I've also already warned Fruit Twist about his language. I think that's enough strikes. Goodbye.

i am really disapointed with mainstrem rap and hip hop right now. but there are some good ones like the game. and a lot of canadian rappers have a traditional b-boy and early 90's feel to it try out these guys

k os
sean paul ( jamaican hip hop)
tru paz
choclair
kardanal ofishal
baby blue sound crew
and a lot more that will be hard to find because they have really small record deals
plus if you like r&b check out my old neighbor his name is
Jacksoul. his songs are really good i especially like "still beleive in love"

Holy crap Fruit Twist really screwed that one up.

I lost interest in rap after I started listening to rock. At that point I was just discovering RATM and MM, about 3 years ago. I had all these preconceived notions in my head about MM like everyone else, but after I listened to his music and then researched. bio'd, and watched interviews with him, I was an instant fan. I dropped rap becasue I then realised how much lack of variation there is in it, and the shallowness of the lyrics, and the integrity of the artists also seem to get to me. I have respect for Eminem though, even if he is just another white suburban guy who thinks he from the ghetto, I like the way he challenges America and pushes the limits. That's why I like Eminem, Rage Against The Machine and Marilyn Manson. Most other rap I wouldn't even give a chance, but Eminem, Dre, and Ice Cube seemed to pull it off for me- they actually have an ear for rhythm and tune. I like the rock I listen to though mostly for the lyrics, but a good tune certainly helps. I find it's primarily the lyrics and tempo and general feeling you get from certain songs that attracts me to a particular artist.

[edit]Steve, only Haiden Neale is from Guelph. Jacksoul the band is in Toronto.

Sean Paul isn't really Canadian, I think I read he was born in Jamaica, then moved to Toronto to live with his Grandmother in his teens, good luck finding any official info that says he's anything other than jamaican though.

I have a great Kweli/Kardy record called Murderous.

It's one thing I haven't understood, why people tend to hate rap, not dislike. Plainly hate rap.

I don't see anything wrong with Rap music, but that's me.

Care to explain, why some of you hate Rap?

People hate rap, because they don't know any other hiphop than the trash in rotation on tv. If that would be the only hiphop I'd get to hear then I would also hate the genre. Chingy, fiddy, ja-rule, J-Kwon, Missy, etcetera... all of these artists and more are only putting out trash because they know teenagers who are sensitive to hype (most teenagers) will buy it and spend their pocket money on the album. 90% of my music is hiphop, yet I hate 90% of the hiphop being put out lately.... not only mainstream sucks, also in the underground you have a load of nerds rapping about star trek with whiney voices, that is just as bad.

Anyway, if you hate rap then ask advice from people who do know rap, they might not make hiphop your favorite type of music, but at least you'll learn to appreciate it more. You wouldn't be the first one to be converted to hiphop.

Look here to see how to get converted ;)

He is right in a way though, a lot of the rap the average person gets confronted with only consists of empty headed trash like the type he just described. The music industry, and definitely the industry in the "urban :yuck: " types of music are really sexist and racist. It is a shame, but it's the truth. I hate to see that the image of hiphop got ruined to many people like him, since there is much more to hiphop, which you'll find out when researching the genre a little deeper.

Anyone hating rap right now, send me a PM with some artists that you DO like and I'll try to find 10 hiphop songs that might change your mind. I'll challenge you, if you don't like any songs I'd send, then hiphop probably really isn't the genre for you.

This would be for educational purposes, so not illegal... not really... in my opinion

Even though I understand your point a little, you are wrong. Sampling has always been a huge part of hiphop. Especially in old-school hiphop lots of samples were used. Lately a lot of keyboard beats and electronic, self-composed beats are being made, and personally I heavily prefer hearing the type of beats using samples, like a DJ Premier or Pete Rock does. Of course there still are producers rising and coming up like Stoupe (of Jedi Mind Tricks) and RJD2 who produce very well constructed sample-based beats.

Fruit Twist is lucky that there is a computer screen and miles of network cable and wireless signals separating us. 🤬

Rap music started like this:

The roots of hip hop are in West African and African American music. The griots of West Africa are a group of traveling singers and poets, whose musical style is reminiscent of hip hop. Discussion of the roots of hip hop (and rap) must mention the contributions of The Last Poets and Jalal Mansur Nuriddin, whose jazzy and poetic "spiels" commented on 1960's culture. True hip hop arose during the 1970s when block parties became common in New York City, especially in the Bronx. Block parties were usually accompanied by music, especially funk and soul music. The early DJs at block parties began isolating the percussion breaks to hit songs, realizing that these were the most danceable and entertaining parts; this technique was then common in Jamaica (see dub music) and had spread via the substantial Jamaican immigrant community in New York City, especially the godfather of hip hop, DJ Kool Herc. Dub had arisen in Jamaica due to the influence of American sailors and radio stations playing R&B. Large sound systems were set up to accommodate poor Jamaicans, who couldn't afford to buy records, and dub developed at the sound systems (refers to both the system and the parties that evolved around them).

Why is rap music what it is today? Music changes with the times. END OF DISCUSSION.

It's ok not like rap, or even hate it. But to say it's not music, that's wrong IMO.

You're a perfect example who doesn't know jack **** about rap or hiphop. That is as ignorant as saying that metal isn't any more than kicking an electric guitar down the stairs while screaming your lungs out.

yup, and metal is crap as well (well, a minority of it)

I can't understand how people can listen to some one talking ('singing') over a mess of noise that is classed as 'music'. I am not saying that many other types of music don't enforce this idea, but rap is by far the worst. Yes, trash metal and some crappy heavy rock is just some one shouting and thrashing a guitar, but I don't like that either.

what annoys me most is the fact that rap music is classed as 'music', it quite clearly isn't music, as it contains no musical content, just some (normally black) person talking fast over the same old drum beat that repeats again and again.

Besides, I am ignorant, and i know it, but ignorance is generally bliss, especially in the area of crap music.

The only good thing bout rap music is that once you've heard one example of tosh (ie - rap, hip-hop etc.), they generally sound the same, so you don't have to put up with listening to it again.

It's a love it or hate it thing, just like Marmite (or the so-called 'Vege-mite')...

Rock, Most Metal, some Punk, Ballards, Driving Rock or any other air guitary tunes.......LOVE 👍

Rap, hip-hop, Drum and Bass or anything generally sung by a black person or a pathetic asshole white one........HATE :yuck:

You sure? I've listened to Rap for about 7 years. I don't wear trackies unless I'm playing football and I have never been in trouble with the Police, I haven't even had a parking ticket.
