And I'm noticing more details on the background, however I haven't seen season 1 in quite a while so I can be wrong.

Well parts of animation were outsourced for this season, so Studio B was able to get the work on the structure of the show done and the studio they used for the animation was able to focus entirely on that one aspect. So that explains the higher quality animation.

It blew my mind when they started doing that stuff with the stained glass.

I just noticed that Celestia uses stoned enemies as furniture

They do a camera panning while moving the camera on 2D, that was good, in fact there are plenty of good angles used in that dimension, those are awesome as well.

Those certainly were the animation highlights of episode one. I can't wait to see more awesome animation like that throughout the rest of the season.

The animation was absolutely outstanding this time around. That part with the stained glass when the perspective was shifting just looked amazing.
