First off can you customize cars? Are there a lot of cars to choose from? I heard this game isn't a simulator like GT, can someone explain how it's different? Thanks!

You can't customize - a new hardcore mode is coming with assists off if you wanted a challenge, you can change designs stripes,colours etc on most cars but not decals like NFS or Forza. It is an arcade game (quick start and races/TT) with a hint of a sim 
Season pass is essential (Cheap) and will give you 100 cars easy all good cars. Bikes is an add on and well worth it if you like super bikes and speed.
Have a read of this thread and the others on the main DC thread-the views pretty much sum up what the game is like now a year or so after the launch 👍
