It's the same old boring argument so I won't comment on damage itself
However...
What an appalling comparison.
In an FPS the object is to shoot other people to kill them.
In GT5 the object is to avoid the other cars and win races.
So in fact rather than "Same thing here" they are complete opposites...
No, sorry... In a FPS, the OTHER guy's job (online) is to shoot YOU. That's why it's allowed. What fun would it be if ONLY you could shoot your opponents, but they couldn't shoot you? In GT5, if they are ALLOWED to crash into you, THEY WILL...
Welcome to 'Basherland'
Without a damage system that severely limits your ability to continue a race (or at least be competitive), it's going to be a piñata-fest online. Kids will be kids. Look at what happened to Shift, online. Because damage wasn't mandated, the kids all took it off, and turned a game that actually wasn't bad into an exercise in frustration or anyone actually wanting to RACE.
Personally, I would LOVE it if GT5 SOUNDED like a real collision. It's a horrible sound, anyone who has been in a real wreck never wants to hear it again. But I feel like I've driven into a tympani when I hit things in GT5! Doesn't sound like a crash at all. Doesn't behave like a crash. Doesn't LOOK like a crash. Of the three, looking like a crash is the only one that taxes the PS3. Don't try to make out like it can't be done. Just forget the visual damage.
BTW, I played GT5p briefly, about a year ago. I seem to remember getting hefty engine cuts whenever I drove into an AI opponent. I also received them for sideswiping the walls. Whatever happened to THAT? GT5, IMO, is even WORSE than GT5p at least in this regard.
So, sorry MarkyMark (snicker!)... If you think having virtually indestructible cars and a cartoon sound instead of a collision sound is GOOD, just wait until online racing works! May all your opponents be basher kids..!

After all, avoiding THEM seems to be what you think the game should be. Unfortunately, they are NOT going to be avoiding YOU...
