Total Amount You Have (and will) Spend on Gran Turismo

So, I was looking around my apartment the other day and I started adding together all of the dollars that I have spent on the Gran Turismo franchise. Now, I want to state that I am not and never have been a rich person. Also, I want to state that I do not want this to turn into a measuring contest (if you know what I mean) .

Rather, it is going to be interesting to see what some of the more intense GT fans have spent on the series. Also, it could be funny/scary to add everyone's together who responds in this thread.

Include it if it meets either of these two criteria:
A) It is required to be able to play Gran Turismo. i.e. the games and consoles
B) It was purchased for the enhancement of Gran Turismo. i.e. steering wheels

General Story: I never had really heard of or paid any attention to Gran Turismo until my friend bought GT3. I saw him buy a car and then race once. Not thinking much of it, about a year later I was at Blockbuster looking for a game to rent and noticed GT3. Picked it up and the rest is history.

Also, I have placed the PS2 and GT4 on my list twice, because I have recently repurchased them to use with my new G27. Which, by the way I split with a friend and got at a discount and that is why it is only listed at $100.

I can't remember how much I have spent on the GT franchise but I can tell you how much i've spent preparing for GT5 and my spending hasn't finished yet!

40" Sony bravia V4000 £599.
PS3 £299.
Logitech G25 £99.
Gameracer Pro+seat raiser £300.

Total £1297.

Some of my friends/family think im mad spending all of the above for GT5 but I just know for a fact it will be money well spent. I was fortunate to get a bargain with the TV & G25. My G25 is nearly 1yr old and yet it still remains in the box unused awaiting GT5.

Let's be realistic here...I didn't buy any hardware specifically for the Gran Turismo series. I'd have a HDTV anyway regardless, and have owned a PS1, PS2, and PS3 for plenty of reasons other than Gran Turismo. Therefore, listing such hardware is kinda' pointless.

So, what has the franchise cost me?

Not bad for over 10 years worth of racing enjoyment. Chances are I'll buy a G27 and Wheelstand Pro when GT5 does launch though.

I came in late for the GT series- so I never bought anything GT related, except for GT4 on ebay ($12) and GT5 ($40) So right now, $52

What I plan to spend.

So predictions on overall cost on the GT series once GT5 comes out- 12+40+360

First time i played GT ( the original ) i actually rented a PS-one console at a local video-store before buying GT and a PS-one.
Being car-mad GT1 and 2 were perhaps the only games i really got into apart from maybe some other titles i can't even remember now.
It wasn't until the PS2 arrived i really got into other games as well, both driving games as well as other genres.
Agree TokyoD getting a PS3 wasn't only because of GT5 ( but still the main reason ) and if i was even bothered to figure out how much it has cost me over the years i had to add all those other games to the total costs as well, given that GT got me into gaming in the first place, by that logic.
And even adding the costs of renting that PS-one for a week.

I did buy the PS3 2 years ago just for GT5, like I bought the 360 just for FM3.

The games I own other than gt and fm? MGS4 (platinum, bought last year), Fight Night Round 4 (bought in july, just after the deceiving E3) and God of War 3 (my first gow ever). That's it.

Hardware? DFGT bought last year just for Gran Turismo. I used it a few months on rFactor and GTR but then my pc died and switched to mac.
Wheelstand Pro is a must have since I can't put the wheel on a desk...

I can see reason when listing things like a wheel and stand, as GT could well be the only racing game people bother with, or at leat use a wheel with.

The thing is, why would you buy a console for a game that's not even out yet? Doesn't make sense. Sure, I bought into PS3 at launch because of the GT franchise. However, I know there were other games I wanted, and I knew it would be a long while before it came out.

Surely if you want a PS3 purely for GT5, you buy it when GT5 comes out (or close to launch), otherwise there has to be more to it, in which case it was not just for GT5. Maybe I'm being too picky with the definition of "bought for Gran Turismo", but that's how I see it. Yes, there are people out there who rent stuff, and people who had hardware bought for them etc., but regardless, you need the hardware to play the game, so its inclusion is pointless IMO.

Should people add up the electricity they used while playing it? That's requried to play Gran Turismo. To get electricity means buying a property usually. Should the cost of my house be included too?

No one is trying to look "impressive". At least I hope not.

To the point of the consoles, If you read the my initial post you will see that I asked people to include it. So, you certainly shouldn't blame anybody for including it.

So, I guess the better question is, "why did I ask people to include the consoles?" Its simple, you cannot play GT w/o them. Which means that has, in fact, cost you to play GT. Please do not try and make this more complicated, because then you will be perceived as derailing a thread over a stupid semantic argument.

However, show me somebody who has a room and setup dedicated to that one game, and one game only, and uses the equipment in there for nothing else. There will not be many people I can tell you.

I wasn't talking about your original post and you know it. You were wondering why I would buy a PS3 before the release of GT5....well GT5 Prologue came out in 2008, so I bought my PS3, so I also bought a wheel and a stand for it 💡.
And since GT5 wasn't released shortly after it, I had to entertain myself so I bought a few titles. But as I already said my intention when i bought the PS3 was just-to-play-gran-turismo...

If people question my logic, I'll respond accordingly. Nobody has yet given me a good reason as to why hardware should be included in the cost (apart from if GT is the ONLY franchise you own), and if so, where the line should be drawn regarding everything else that is required around you to facilitate playing that game.

I got a DFGT last year when I thought GT5 was coming that was £100 ( I know I got ripped off ).

I need a wheelstand pro and a chair so thats going to be another £150.

So all in around £300 I suppose.

And probably my marriage when it finally arrives, but thats minor compared to the £300 quid!

All I know is that I got GT3 included with the PS2. I played it, disliked it, and traded it in at GS..

Then I re-bought it some years later. Worst financial mistake ever. Terrible game. And it's no coincidence. It had the shortest production time of any GT title.
