Which necessarily means that the road car MUST be a Toyota per GT3 regs, which for some reason the media up until now has refused to grasp.

Kreifels brought up the idea that GR may be spinning off into its entire own brand but in that case it's still not a Lexus lol.

I still wonder why the change of the front end from this to now. Maybe there will be a Lexus and a GR version?

Even if they won't call it a Lexus, it's interesting that they market it as the "next version" of the LFA too.

It’s unlikely that V8 will be reserved solely for the GR GT, though. Uehara added that a version “with a more gentle character” could be possible, likely appearing in Lexus’ incoming new sports car based on the Lexus Sport concept.

Well, there it is. The new Dodge Viper's chassis is a Toyota, now all they gotta do is design the rest.

The GR GT, could have looked stunning. Its generously long, low and wide, but unfortunately the road car's design seems to have been compromised for GT3 on-track performance. It reminds me of one of those Gran Turismo 'road car' versions of the GT3s. Also, is that a new Honda Prelude nose grafted on it?

The road car of the Toyota looks ugly as hell. Really long and weird shoulders. And the rear is just one giant black vent with curvy tail lights while the front is so sharp you could cut yourself.

I will give it a pass though because this car is the closest we’re going to get to a modern day homologation special. It’s clearly a racing car first and a road car second in terms of the design.

Also I wonder if we’ll see a GR GT4 in the future to replace the outgoing Supra, or maybe another GT4 based on the next Supra or even a rumoured MR2?

I wonder if the twin turbo V8 is related to the one that was originally planned to go in the cancelled Lexus LC-F

Imagine if Mazda built the RX-Vision ten years ago. They could build it now and it’d still look fresh. Maybe it should have been an MX-7 and just had a NA piston engine to start the ball rolling. Should have asked Toyota for help.

This profile looks atrocious :yuck: it looks like an old RX7 with an early-2000s widebody kit! That front end looks like someone took the bottom half of previous Camry's front bumper and grafted it on the current Camry.

The new LFA looks incredible by comparison, but it's electric, and while that's not bad (certainly in today's climate), why would you remove the one aspect that everyone agreed is the best thing ABOUT the original

I don't know, I actually love that profile. The front end is fine but I prefer the mule version tbh

Speaking of mule version, they obviously tested the car with aero accessories so we've either got a package or a hotted up trim on the way as well. I was wrong about it being a Toyota but all the Lexus folks were way off. Nobody saw GR becoming a brand until a few weeks ago when those rumors came out.

To their credit, the car has been actively hyped as a LFA successor & Lexus media folks were told the other car was intended to be something else for months. Nobody had any idea the Lexus car was actually called the LFA Concept as well.

I’m not talking about the name or this Lexus as displayed. Both The concept GT3 car and a Lexus sports car debuted in 2022 but confusingly journalists kept assuming they were the same car despite looking completely different. Even after spy shots of the GT3 car initially and then the road car came out, journalists still referred to the two cars as being the same car, or the road car being one brand and the race car being another, despite the GT3 regulations making those scenarios impossible. LFR, yada yada. This despite the several branding exercises of which Lexus was never a part of.

The only people hyping either of these cars as an “LFA successor” were the media themselves and they ignored the implications of GT3 which require the road car and race car to be the same thing, including the gas engine.

Turns out, the car from all the spy shots was neither a Lexus or Supra, while the actual Lexus continues to be a concept only.

Probably because at the time, there were reports they were being built on the same chassis.

LFR came specifically from a trademark Toyota filed.

"Lexus was never part of" - that's the brand Toyota filed it under.

Definitely not Toyota themselves using the LFA in the media leading up to the reveal of the GR. Definitely not Toyota now officially calling one of the cars the "LFA Concept".

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing and Lexus Hold World Premiere of GR GT, GR GT3, and Lexus LFA Concept

Looks like the media was right: May 30th, 2022
The Lexus Electrified Sport Concept will make its public debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed as part of an EV showcase at the event.

The concept foretells a new battery-electric supercar expected to be the spiritual successor of the LFA, with a 0–60mph time of just over two seconds and an expected range of 435 miles. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is an annual event in England that features vehicles of every description.

Turns out, the car from all the spy shots was neither a Lexus or Supra, while the actual Lexus continues to be a concept only.
Hindsight is 2020 after 4 years of media speculation.

Blink and you'll miss it but we can kind of compare the size of the GR versus the Mustang GT3. The GR is definitely lower but also appears wider and longer. I think their footprints are probably similar overall which puts the GR on par with the Ford and BMW, both of which are the longest GT3 cars.

Funny thing is the next generation Mustang is likely to get smaller and lighter.
