Power - the limits used are not accurate to real life and were selected because they are enforceable by the game and provide an entertaining online racing experience.


Trans Am 1:
Mercury Cougar XR-7 1967, Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA 1600 1965, Pontiac Tempest Le Mans GTO 1964 "Grey Ghost" Replica, Nissan Bluebird 510 1969* - Maximum 350bhp, Minimum 812kg.
Drivers use the Mercury, Alfa and Pontiac and change at 5 weekly intervals - *NB the drivers who finish the race in 1st and 2nd position will use the Nissan Bluebird in place of their regular car the following week. (For the first week of the championship the Nissan Bluebird 510 will be driven by racers who hold a Platinum SRR License i.e. Lex Lathor, Flaco and Rehdogg).


Note - Mercury Cougar was a runner up to Ford Mustang in the main up to 5 litre class in 1967. The 1964 Pontiac Tempest was a privateer entrant in 1971 which achieved amazing results, beaten only by the AMC and Ford works teams. Alfa Romeo were champions of the under 2 litre category (1966 & 1970) and Nissan (then known as Datsun) were champions of the revised under 2.5 litre class with the Bluebird (1971 & 1972). In the early days the small cars raced with the big cars and Jochen Rindt once scored an overall win in his little Alfa beating Bob Tullius in his Dodge Dart. There were frequent changes of driver line up as in the early years there was only a manufacturers championship and no championship for drivers.

Trans Am 2:
Ford Mustang Mach 1 1971, Ford Mustang Trans Cammer 1970 OR Dodge Challenger R/T 1970, Chevrolet Camaro Z28 1969 OR Plymouth AAR Cuda 340 Six Barrel 1970 - Max Tune
Drivers use 3 of the 5 cars and change at 5 weekly intervals - NB drivers who hold a Platinum or Gold SRR License will use the Dodge and Plymouth as these are more difficult to control. The Trans Am 2 Championship will be scored both overall and by license grade so that the slight variation in machinery does not result in any unfairness.


Note - A Platinum license holder is a driver who has won a championship in Sick's Race Room. A Gold license holder is a fast or very fast driver. A silver license holder is a normal driver - this category may also include online novices.

Note - these cars require good throttle control as they have more power than grip. Trans Am 1 is intended to provide a good warm up before taking the wheel of one of these monsters and later the similarly powerful, but much lighter Toyota 7.

Can Am by Toyota 7 1970 - Tuning Prohibited (827bhp with oil change)

Group 7 unlimited capacity, prototype Sports Car racing was popular in America (Can Am), Europe (Interserie) and Japan where the Japanese Grand Prix was an event held at Fuji not for F1 cars, but Group 7 behemoths from Toyota, Nissan and Mazda with a sprinkling of Lolas and Porsches. Nissan held the upper hand in 1969 with their 6 litre V12 monsters so for 1970 the Toyota 7 was turbocharged and the plan was to race in Japan and then enter Can Am and battle with the dominant McLaren's, however when two test drivers were killed the project was cancelled.

Can Am was held during the F1 off season and hence could attract the best drivers in the world - they were the fastest racing machines on the planet with engines sometimes exceeding 8 litres and with the introduction of turbocharging to the series by Porsche and Shadow power reached frightening levels. Hopefully we can recreate some of that excitement with the Toyota 7!

Championship Points

We use the MotoGP points system as this awards points down to 15th place and provides an appropriate reward differential between positions (1st = 25, 2nd = 20, 3rd = 16, 4th = 13, 5th = 11, 6th = 10 etc).

Three drivers championships will be scored:

Trans Am 1
Trans Am 2 - This will be scored both overall and divided by license grade (Silver & Gold/Platinum)
Can Am

Two manufacturers championships will be scored (points from highest placed car):

Trans Am 1: Alfa Romeo, Mercury, Nissan, Pontiac (NB the Nissan is driven by drivers who came 1st or 2nd in the race the previous week).

Trans Am 2: Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Plymouth, Trans Cammer

The Trans Am 1 Tribute Team Trophy
A team trophy is scored in honour of three great drivers:
Jochen Rindt - Team Captain: Flaco
Peter Revson - Team Captain: Lex Lathor
Mark Donohue - Team Captain: Rehdogg

The Horst Kwech Trophy

Tony Lomas has kindly agreed to score this trophy which is for the number of places made up in the race relative to your qualifying position and is based on the Jack Sears Trophy previously used in BTCC. The Horst Kwech Trophy is named in honour of the great Trans Am Racer, Engineer and Inventor.


IMPORTANT - as we have a full room it is important to inform the Host when you are unable to attend.
This will enable Reserve Drivers to temporarily fill your slot on the grid. For Round 7 there are expected to be 3 spaces.

Car Details

Drivers change cars after every 5 rounds i.e. at rounds 6 and 11. To create closer racing in Trans Am 2, when there is a choice of car, the drivers who hold an SRR Platinum or Gold License will use the cars marked *. In Trans Am 1 the drivers who finish the race in 1st and 2nd position will use the Nissan Bluebird 510 the following week except for round 1 where it will be driven by the Platinum Drivers Lex Lathor, Flaco and Rehdogg.

To spread talent among the choices, drivers will be assigned cars according to their final position in the Historic BSCC Championship (this may be subject to adjustment by the host to ensure an even spread of Platinum and Gold SRR License holders).

Background to Trans Am & Can Am

Trans Am started in 1966 and there were no drivers championships until 1972 - just manufacturers titles with the result that some teams changed their drivers on almost a meeting by meeting basis in an attempt to gain an advantage. Nissan (Datsun) entered with John Morton as their star driver in a team managed by Peter Brock (designer of the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe) - in order to spice up Trans Am 1 and because the Nissan is slower our Nissan's will be driven by different drivers each round - they will be driven by those drivers who finished 1st or 2nd at the previous round except for round 1 where it will be driven by the Platinum Drivers Lex Lathor, Flaco and Rehdogg.

I strongly recommend that you watch the following documentary which tells the story of John Morton and Nissan's (then known as Datsun) battle with Alfa Romeo and the brilliant Horst Kwech for the 1971 Trans Am Championship for under 2.5 litre cars.




Also highly recommended is the following short documentary which tells the story of the 1971 Trans Am Championship for the big class - the under 5 litre cars.



Can Am

Group 7 racing with unlimited capacity, unhomologated (prototype) sports cars was popular in Japan, Europe (Interserie) and the USA (Can Am). I couldn't find any good quality footage of the Toyota 7 - there is plenty of vintage footage of the Japanese GP which was originally a Group 7 race contested by Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Lola and Porsche, but that footage is faded and in Japanese. This short clip featuring the very talented Jim Pace gives some idea of what it was like driving a Group 7 car:



Enjoy this time warp footage of the inaugural Can Am race held at St Jovite Circuit, Montreal Canada in 1966 - the film may be faded, but the commentary is excellent!

Rules

Races will be held each Sunday starting at 17:00 GMT. (During the period of British Summer Time - March to October - meetings will be held one hour earlier 16:00 GMT = 17:00 BST).

The race meeting will last a little under 2 hours. The support race called Trans Am 1 will be 15 minutes long. The main event will alternate between the Trans Am 2 and Can Am race. The main event will be 25 minutes long with the support lasting 15 minutes. 5 minutes of practise (approx.) and a 5 minute qualifying session will be held before each race. The grid order will be fastest qualifier first. There will be one race for each championship each Sunday.

Each race will be on Race Hard Tyres with no driving aids except optional ABS (which most drivers set to 1) and optional driving line, edge grip will be real and race starts will have false start check. Penalties weak and damage light, slipstream real, no boost.

Some of us have been racing every Sunday for several years now. All drivers are expected to drive in a considerate, careful and mature manner. All ability levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced.

Drivers will change their car selection after every five meetings as per the car Choice Table.

All Drivers are expected to follow the hosts instructions regarding the race meeting at all times.

The Cars: - NO WINGS, BUT appropriate SPOILERS should be added - please refer to the car photos at start of thread to see which spoilers should be fitted and also the car guidance post (the host will advise if your spoilers are inappropriate so that they can be changed before the next meeting).


Paint should be in age appropriate colours e.g. solid or metallic only, no chrome or polarized finishes.

Wheels should be age appropriate as per the guide in standard size - if wheels or wheel colour are inappropriate the host will request that the driver change them before the next round.

Where possible bumpers should be removed in order to enhance the race look.

Bonnets should be as specified in the car guidance post.

Any tuning is allowed subject to any PP, minimum weight and maximum power limits. I only use tuning limits which are enforceable by the game hence parity is achieved by rotating cars at regular intervals not by the use of different limits on cars.

Corner Cutting
Tyres can go onto the kerb, but not the grass (in real life this would cause the car to lose grip and crash). Deliberate corner cutting will be penalised by the Host and may include removal of points and eventually a ban. Sometimes corner cutting is not deliberate, but is caused by a loss of control or steering error - the driver should ensure that he has not gained an advantage and if he has, give up any place or places gained.

Photographs

Photographs of the race action are encouraged. Race reports and photographs taken by the official race photographer (IfandOr) will be published in this thread.

Please sign up by sending a message to Sick_Cylinder via your Playstation 3 or via GTPlanet. There will be 16 regular drivers in the championships.

Absence / Unable to attend races
If you know that you will be unable to attend certain rounds please inform the Host. It may then be possible for a reserve driver to fill your slot on the grid. If you no longer wish to participate in the championship the first reserve driver will fill your grid slot and will drive the same type of car.

Reserve Drivers
If the grid is full you can sign up to be a reserve driver. You will be able to race when a regular driver is absent and the grid therefore has a vacant slot. If a regular driver leaves the championship you will be offered that drivers slot and will become a regular driver using the same type of car as the original regular driver was using (or was scheduled to use).

If you have not raced for three consecutive weeks you will be deemed to have become a reserve driver.

If you have questions regarding the races or comments about quality of driving or other problems etc, please raise these with the Host Sick_Cylinder via your Playstation 3 or via the conversation facility on GTPlanet.

It is best to reserve postings on this thread for race photos, race reports, links to good tunes or other helpful tips on cars in the car list.

Room Etiquette / Voice chat
If drivers speak to each other they should use the PSN name even if they know the drivers real name. All conversations should be in English. Please refrain from talking during races or qualifying as some drivers may find it distracting. Please also refrain from text chat during races or qualifying as this is also distracting.

If voice chat is enabled during races the following will apply, however it should be noted that sometimes we will race with voice chat disabled in order to maximise bandwidth and in an attempt to reduce disconnection problems.

The purpose of the voice chat is to enable the leaders to indicate when they are approaching and about to lap another driver. The horn can also be used by the lead driver when about to lap another driver. No offence should be taken by the use of the horn - in this case it is purely a warning signal. To avoid confusion the horn should not be used at any other time including while stationary on the grid. Some drivers do not have microphones or their spoken English may not be good - this does not matter and they will not be discriminated against - they can use the horn to warn the driver in front that they are about to lap. Use of the horn for any purpose other than that outlined will result in a warning and or penalty.

Voice chat will also enable a driver to indicate if he intends to carry out a pitstop. The procedure will be that at the start of the lap on which he intends to pit, the driver will say his name and that he is pitting at the end of this lap. He will also say that he is about to pit when approaching the pit lane. The driver will also announce when he has left the pits and rejoined the track - while doing so he will endeavour to stay inside the white lines when rejoining.

For example in my case on crossing the start line I would say "Sick pitting on lap ten". On approaching the pits I would say "Sick entering Pits". On rejoining the race I would say "Sick rejoining race". If a driver is about to be lapped, he should hold a steady course and if possible momentarily lift off the throttle so that the faster driver can pass.

Race Room Settings
Start type = Grid start with false start check (this means hold car still with brake until start)
Grid order = Fastest First (this means start in order of practise lap time)
Boost = off
Penalty = Weak (this means avoid crashing or short cutting the track)
Tyre / Fuel depletion = fast (this means try to avoid drifting round corners)
Grip reduction on track edge = real
Minimum number of pit stops = 1
Require tyre type change = off (this means you can stick with race hard tyres)
Race finish delay = 180 seconds (there will be a wide range of abilities of driver)
Visible damage = off (this prevents spoiling the look of photos)
Mechanical damage = Light (if you have a crash the damage will repair itself)
Slipstream strength = Real
Tyre = Racing Hard
Nitrous = Prohibited
Vehicle Tuning = No Limit as this cannot be enforced by the game (but check BHP and weight limits and PP limits)
Skid recovery force = prohibited
Active steering = prohibited
Active stability management = prohibited
Driving line = optional
Traction control = prohibited
ABS = optional

PITSTOPS - IMPORTANT INFORMATION
There will be one compulsory pitstop to change tyres in each race (unless otherwise stated).

If you fail to take a pitstop the game will automatically give you a 50 second penalty.

You can take your pitstop on any lap apart from the last lap.

If you take your pitstop on the last lap the host will give you a 30 second penalty (Unfortunately this is necessary due to an error in GT6 which fails to conduct a proper pitstop on the final lap).

No pit stops will be held if the track does not have pit lane (e.g. London) and tyre wear will be slowed from very fast to fast.

Championship points

There are three drivers championships running simultaneously, therefore it is possible that one driver could win all three championships. In the event of a points tie the champion will be the driver with the greatest number of 1st place finishes - if this is tied, it will be the driver with the greatest number of second place finishes etc. and so on.

Bad internet connections / PS3 Problems
If the Host is disconnected by an internet or PS3 problem, the Deputy Host (IfAndOr) will Host the meeting. If IfAndOr is also disconnected the second Deputy Host (Lex Lathor) will Host the meeting.

If a driver leaves a race after it has started due to an internet or PS3 problem he or she should send a message to the Host who will award points equivalent to a last place finish in the race.

If a driver has a bad connection such that his or her car is lagging excessively and unpredictably the Host may ask the driver to leave and re-enter the room.

To reduce the risk of bad internet connections all drivers should empty their system cache before the race meeting starts.

Practise - A series of practise races will be held on the Sunday before the championship commences - these are not part of the championship, but are an opportunity to check room settings and test cars. After the championships have been completed another practise / test meeting will be held before the start of the next championship(s).

Hi Ryan - glad we can tempt you! If you are classified as fast you'll have Challenger, Cuda and Mach 1 (as per Lex, Flaco etc) - if you are classified as mortal it's Camaro, Trans Cammer and Mach 1. Car choices will be confirmed nearer the end of the current series (Ford Ferrari Wars, Historic BSCC & Caterham Cup).

Wait... the slower drivers are provided the best cars, even in Trans-Am 2?

Me want Camaro!

The Camaro has a lot less power than the other cars when given a max tune, but in testing it's good handling produced better lap times in my hands (average level driver) - the fast drivers will be able to make use of the power advantage of the Challenger and Cuda.

On a separate note it's odd how I set up this thread and reserved a lot of posts on 4th July, but this website has started to jumble the replies so recent ones are now appearing before the original posts!

It's got itself a little bit messed up. Perhaps it was the long delay between posts.

I've just added a great historic film of the first ever Can Am race - it was held at St Jovite Montreal in 1966 and although the film is faded, the commentary and cars are great! Find it in the post headed - Background to Trans Am and Can Am.
 
Test Day - 28th December 2014 at 17:00

There will be a series of short test races giving you a chance to test your cars for the new championships: Trans Am 1, Trans Am 2 and Can Am. For the Test Races we will use Trial Mountain with a brief photoshoot at High Speed Ring.

Note - full details on the cars are given at the start of the thread. The first post includes the Track List and Car List.

The Nissan Bluebird (510) 1969 will be driven in Trans Am 1 for 1 round by whichever drivers place 1st and 2nd in the previous round. For Round 1 held on 4th January 2015 it will be driven by the Platinum Drivers Lex Lathor (Blue), Flaco (White) and Rehdogg (Red).

The first test race on 28th December will be a one make race for the Nissan Bluebird.

The second test race will be for the Trans Am 1 Cars that you will be using in Round 1 - please refer to the guide below:

We will finish with a test race for the Can Am Championship using the Toyota 7.

In view of the Christmas festivities I am planning to complete the meeting in about one hour rather than the two hours of our normal meetings. I hope as many of you as possible can make it. Voice chat will be enabled so you can have a catch up and compare presents etc. I know one of my presents already (when you get to a certain age you buy your own presents and give them to your relatives to give to you and strangely they always forget to give you the money! I'm getting a fabulous book called "Into the Red" a test of 21 cars from Nick Mason's car collection - it even comes with an audio CD of the engine sounds so you can guess what I'll be listening to on Christmas Day - Yes - the supercharged BRM V16 - amazingly Amazon only charged me 1p for the book and audio CD!!!)

Rindt (Jochen) - headed by Flaco, Smiley and Emo
Revson (Peter) - headed by Lex, Makovics and Harsk
Donohue (Mark) - headed by Rehdogg, Ryan and Pimiki


Trans Am 2 will feature 2 Drivers championships - the Platinum Trophy open to platinum and gold drivers and the Silver Trophy open to silver drivers. There will also be a manufacturers championship for: Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet, Plymouth and Trans Cammer.


The Can Am Cup is open to all drivers using the Toyota 7.

Tony Lomas will be continuing the Jack Sears Trophy for race performance relative to qualifying performance, but it will be renamed the Horst Kwech Trophy in honour of the great driver, engineer and inventor.

Due to lack of time some drivers were running without a setup, race number, correct wheels, bonnet and incorrect spoilers (note spoilers are ok, but no wings please). Hopefully everyone will be ready for Round 1 next week - the car choices are detailed in post 1 of this thread and the correct wheels, spoilers, bonnets and suggested colours are also listed, but have been reproduced below for your convenience.

The Trans Am 1 cars provided a nice warmup, but I found my Ford Mustang Mach 1 very difficult to control - if anyone has found a decent setup for this car which they could share it would be greatly appreciated.

During the test races we had a couple of guest racers and they are welcome to sign up and join, but anyone who joins us is reminded not to cut the course - tyres can go onto the kerbs, but cars should remain on the track.

The Trans Am 2 cars were tricky to drive, but I just think I need to practise more and get a better setup on the Mach 1.

The Can Am by Toyota 7 race was very enjoyable to drive after the difficult Mach 1 - still tricky, but that thing is fast, exciting and alive!

We will stick with the race hard tyres for round 1, but if people are finding the cars too difficult to control I will check after that round and consider switching to race medium tyres - the number one thing is your enjoyment of these race series.

Hi guys. Off to a new year with exciting racing. @Sick Cylinder Lex said yesterday I was due to use the "Datsun" for the first race at LS, after reading through the thread I find that somewhere at the top you mentioned me and Lex as Datsun drivers due to our license grade, then further down, it´s Lex and Smiley due to 1st and 2nd place finishes in the past championships. Which is it? :)

Another thing I´d like to remark is colour choices. I was first thinking of keeping my Yellow(ish) colours on paintable cars but reading your suggestion to paint cars after favourite Trans Am drivers/teams I´d find it interesting to represent a Roger Penske tribute, namely using the colours of the famous ´69 Penske Sunoco Camaro; a nice solid blue and if you´d exceptionally let me paint the wheels in a solid yellow.

@All_racers: Please let me remind you of the following:
Room Etiquette / Voice chat
If drivers speak to each other they should use the PSN name even if they know the drivers real name. All conversations should be in English.
If we would live in 600BC we´d probably speak armaic or persian; or in 100BC we´d probably speak greek, so be glad english is a rather easy language to learn. :)
The horn can also be used by the lead driver when about to lap another driver. No offence should be taken by the use of the horn - in this case it is purely a warning signal. To avoid confusion the horn should not be used at any other time including while stationary on the grid.
Horn = the thing that makes "tooot tooot" ;)

Use of the horn for any purpose other than that outlined will result in a warning and or penalty.

The driver will also announce when he has left the pits and rejoined the track - while doing so he will endeavour to stay inside the white lines when rejoining.

Thanks for post Flaco and great to see you back on track. The blue with yellow wheels Sunoco Camaro paint scheme is a great idea.

We have been running with voice chat disabled in recent weeks without problems (in an effort to reduce disconnections by increasing bandwidth). I will start the series off with voice chat disabled.

Re the horn tooting - we had a few guest drivers on the grid (I allowed this as it was a test day) and they may have started the tooting while waiting for the start. It is best if people don't use their horns except when necessary as it can be distracting.

Also, all drivers please refrain from texting during qualifying or during the race as it can be distracting.

Thanks Flaco for pointing out error in assignment of the Nissan Bluebird for round 1 - I have decided to go with the original concept that for round one only it will be driven by the Platinum Drivers so it will be Lex Lathor, Flaco and Rehdogg - I will correct this elsewhere in the thread. Lex has painted his Nissan blue so please paint yours white and Rehdogg can be red. Note this only applies for round 1 - for rounds 2 until round 15 the Nissan Bluebird will be driven by whichever drivers came 1st and 2nd at the previous round - to reduce confusion I will confirm who will be driving for Nissan before each round. NB this is in the spirit of the early days of Trans Am when it was purely a manufacturers championship and the teams used to change drivers during the season in an attempt to gain an advantage - in 1970 only one driver competed in all 11 rounds and two drivers competed in 10 of the 11 rounds. Altogether 50 drivers were used in the 1970 season!

I have been happy with the colours so far - we just need to remember to add race numbers where possible and change wheels to steel ones (PDI PD525N or American Racing Vintage Torq Thrust as appropriate) also to fit bonnets and spoilers as per the guidance.

Regarding the grip levels - I thought the Trans Am 1 cars were easy to control, but the others were tricky, but manageable. Feel free to provide feedback on the tyres - if necessary we can change Trans Am 2 and Can Am to race medium if people find the cars too difficult to control on race hards, but if possible I would like to stick with the race hards as these cars were not easy to drive and the tyres used were long lasting tyres with relatively low grip.

I found a very nice solid blue colour called 'Ultramarin' from the BMW 507; the wheels are 'Sunlight Yellow' origin unknown.

Edit: OK, Datsun will be painted white and original colour American Racing Wheels.

And thank you again, it´s great for me to be back, too. I was on the verge of going nuts over my internet issues, but it should be all back at normal now.

And also for letting me represent Penske Racing, this is awesome because I have a history in racing this colour scheme since GT5, where I raced the 69 Camaro Race Car in another series, it quickly became popular as the 'Penske Camaro' after I explained those (german) guys who Penske is and that I chose this colour combination as an hommage to this Team. 👍

Very nice and I hope this inspires other drivers to find a great classic livery - I have always had massive respect for Roger Penske - a great driver and an even greater team manager - definitely one of the very best of all time who introduced a new professionalism to racing. I think you and everyone else will enjoy this video of one of my favourite Penske cars:
