Sure, i'll believe you. I also do agree with what you said about the guy in the S13. You could instantly see hes a hobbyist. Still that doesn't make the online drifting feel like the real thing for me. It's all too slippery. I don't understand why is that so. I also hate the force feedback. You are supposed to feel the car through it, but all it does for me is make steering harder than it really is. I don't know how it is with other steering wheels but with the G27 it's literally rubbish. It's fine on normal racing but for drifting it's nothing but a nuisance.

So basically i'd like to know why the hell does it feel like im drifting inside a hockey rink at times? The back end feels rediculously loose and out of control.

I know what you mean about the steering, but realistically, it's good enough to teach you to drift for real.

In fact, drifting in GT5 is harder than real life for one simple reason. In real life you have not only the feeling through the steering wheel and what you are seeing, but you ALSO have the feeling the car puts through your backside, to tell you what is going on. In GT5, you only have your hands and your eyes, so by definition, less input to your brain makes it harder to figure out how to react.

When I learned in games and then jumped in a real car I simply couldn't believe how easy it was, and funnily enough, it's always the people who have learned the other way round (drifted a car, then tried Gran Turismo) who moan about how they can't do it and it doesn't feel real. :)

Boxrdiesel, that guy may well have drifted a fair bit, but the fact is I'm one of the top drifters in Europe, and I learned on the PS2/3 (GT4, Enthusia, GT5P and now GT5) and I'm telling you I'm right. If you choose not to believe me, that's entirely up to you, but you saw my drifting last night, and I'm MUCH better than that in real life, so like I said, the choice is yours :)

The fact is, if you drive PROPERLY in real life and you are REALLY trying hard, a car set up with a decent amount of grip IS snappy. The problem is, most real world people who drift for fun set their cars up forno arse end grip, which makes them feel smooth. My R32 GTS-R has 550bhp and TONS of grip, and it's ANYTHING but smooth.

And if he's really finding it 'snappy' I think you'll find it's down to setup.

Edit: Just watched his vid, I instruct at Santa Pod and he's, to be fair, pretty rubbish. He's not using proper lines (middle of the track the WHOLE way round), there is no consistancy to his angles (CONSTANT steering corrections) etc, so he's not the best to be giving advice. And to top it all off, he's in a stock S13, which is about the easiest thing in the world to drift LOL

I heard tea-ladies drift S13s too as they are free to put the kettle on and make the tea once they initiate a drift.

I drove one recently for the first time properly and they really are nice to keep sideways... far cry from my E30s and any BMWs that I'm used to being grippy and snappy pricks of things and always having to keep on top of things through the drift...

Still, they are far more rewarding to drive once you get it right :)

Yeah, exactly! Much how i learned to handle a car during a drift is feeling the car. Ofcourse using eyes to read the situation is key but for me the strong point has always been the ability to feel the car react and through that you can anticipate it's next move and ofcourse, your next move! 👍

I personally know people who fit the description "moans about not being realistic". It's hard for anyone who's never played sim games because the are not IN the car they are just remote controlling it.. :)

I know loads of people like this! :D

Its definitely the feeling of being in a car that makes the difference though as the most crucial part the drift where feeling a car of how much grip and how its behaving is at the end of a drift or point of transition in my opinion.

This is why everybody shoots off in the other direction when they start out playing the game as they have no feeling of the car starting to bite again and are at the wrong throttle and steering input for when it does.

You even see it in real life to be honest too for beginners where they can throw a car into a nice drift at a reasonable angle but end up getting it totally wrong in the exit with tank-slappers and un-intentional manji'ing after the corner or where in a transition they apply too much steering or left off the throttle too much/get back on it too early or too late resulting in a spin.

James Deane (also lives not too far from me funnily enough :D
) learned on the playstation at first too which seems to go with you thinking drifting in real-life ends up being alot easier considering as James is one of the most consistent and controlled drivers on the scene at the moment.

James and I actually spent a long time discussing this very fact at the Wembley JDM this year. We each never knew the other had learned this way and we were chatting about it for quite a while. :)

twinturbo i finally got my gtr's to drift, am ready to join your drift sessions

As a rule, I don't allow AWD LOL Feel free to come and try, I never kick anyone arbitrarily, but if you are faster than the RWD cars, it won't be allowed. :)

Sorry dude, it's nothing personal, it's simply because you can't twin with RWD's in a 4wd, and it just ends up annoying everyone in RWD as you crash into the back of them. Inevitably the 4wd cars are faster and you end up with the AWD's crashing into the back of the RWD's mid drift as the pace is totally different.

Edit: I should add, I'd actually be quite interested to see you drift you r32, as if you have managed to find a setup that actually works, I'll be eternally grateful :)

So, learning the basics of drifting on a game really can help you in real life? I'll take your word for it. And btw, I'd like to come try drifting my s2k with you sometime, although I'm not the best. I've been getting better though, and it'd be cool to practice with you guys.

Why cant you be on right now?! You are propably having an B-spec enduro going? I find B-spec too boring to even leave it on by itself 👍. I guess i'll find some other server to play on for now!

Hey been watching this thread a while and it looks like something i'd be interested in.
I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to drifting but i'd like to have a blast with people sometime :)

No worries man, swing on by, it's all about learning and seat time, so I don't mind if you are a D1 star or you've never drifted before, come skid :)

Room is now up:

1472-6118-3744-3750-6244

I'll be along in a while 👍

Might bring along something alittle different tonight... and if it goes tits up I'll just revert back to my big green monster :p

sorry im brand new to drifting and a complete noob when it comes to online play :S what do the numbers mean :S pleasee help i would like to join the room

The numbers specify which room to join.
What you do is
  • Click on Open Lobby on the GT life screen
  • Once at the Open lobby screen go down
  • Find where it says specify room number

  • Then enter the number

There you go. :)

Room just crashed after three and a half hours LOL Had a 12 person room full and some SIIICK drifting going on :(

New one is:

1472-6118-3830-2743-0360

I'm using a GTS-t R32 in case anybody thinks I'm using a 4WD...

thing seriously needs an RB26 though!:grumpy:

Tell me about it. My drift car is a 32 with a big power 26 and it transforms the car. There really are some parts of Forza that I long for in GT, engine swaps being the biggest one.

My drift car (well, in the middle of building it) is an E30 with an E46 M3 engine so I share the same feeling :(

Fook it at least even Forza had an E30 in it! :grumpy:

A few pic's from last nights session. Really, i can't remember when was the last time i had this much fun playing a game! :dopey:
