Qualifying is still ongoing with the playoffs, but today is the draw for the finals of UEFA Euro 2020.

It's a slightly complicated format because there isn't a host country, and some of the host countries haven't qualified while others won't be playing in the group games they're hosting... With seedings and geographical restrictions, that's set an awful lot of an awful lot of the groups up already, diminishing from the draw somewhat.

The pots are as follows:

Pot A
Belgium, Italy (GpA), England (GpD), Germany (GpF), Spain (GpE), Ukraine

Pot B
France, Poland, Switzerland, Croatia, Netherlands (GpC), Russia (GpB)

Pot C
Portugal, Turkey, Denmark (GpB), Austria, Sweden, Czech Republic

Pot D
Wales, Finland, Playoff A winner (GpC/F), Playoff B winner (GpE), Playoff C winner (GpD), Playoff D winner

Got that all sorted? Good. The draw takes place... now!

Oh deep joy, they're doing positions too. Not caught the start of this in time, so I'll fix it later, but it's:
Italy - A2
Belgium - B3
Ukraine - C2
England - D1
Spain - E1
Germany - F4

Pot two teams drawn as:
Switzerland - A4
Russia - B4
Netherlands - C1
Croatia - D2
Poland - E3
France - F3

Pot three teams...
Turkey - A1
Denmark - B1
Austria - C3
Czech Republic - D4
Sweden - E2
Portugal - F2

That leaves us with a bunch of completely unknown teams, and Wales and Finland. Good going UEFA:
Wales - A3
Finland - B2
Playoff D Winner (Georgia, Belarus, North Macedonia, Kosovo) - C4; unless Romania wins Playoff A, then F1
Playoff C Winner (Scotland, Israel, Serbia, Norway) - D2
Playoff B Winner (Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, Republic of Ireland) - E4
Playoff A Winner (Romania, Iceland, Hungary, Bulgaria) - F1; unless Romania, then C4

Marginally dumber than the situation with drawing teams that haven't qualified yet and not being sure where Romania can go (because they're a host, but I don't quite follow why Hungary, in the same playoff path and also a host, doesn't get the same consideration) is the third-place group rankings.

If the best four third-place teams in round one are in groups A, B, C and D, then third in group A (3A) will play first in group B (1B), 3B will play 1E, 3C will play 1F and 3D will play 1A. If they're ABDE, it'll be 3A1E, 3B1F, 3C1E and 3D1B. There's 15 different combinations. Good luck following it all.

Out of the draws we could have gotten, Italy-Switzerland-Turkey or Belgium-Denmark-Russia, I think Wales got the slightly more favourable one; Italy will be tough but Switzerland and Turkey are winnable games.

Its been a while.

Time for a refresh ahead of this delayed tournament in the Summer.

Nations are starting to name their squads for the tournament, they are permitted to have 26 man squads because they can make five subs in game.

The biggest news really from the squad announcements is that Benzema is back in the France setup for the first time since 2015, he was involved in a blackmail scandal with teammate Mathieu Valbuena and wasn't picked since...until now.

Also Dublin was removed as a venue as it couldn't guarantee that they could have fans in that particular stadium, St Petersburg and Wembley have been given some extra games, and Bilbao has been removed and replaced by Seville.

Sergio Ramos surprisingly left out of the Spain squad which features no Real Madrid players, there are more Brighton players in the squad than Real Madrid players.

From what I've seen, it's either due to being injured or still recovering from one.

Well now there's only the UCL and Europa League finals to go, then finally the Euro.

Gareth Southgate was due to name the England squad tomorrow but he will delay naming the final squad and instead name a larger provisional group.

33 man provisional squad for England. From the interview that succeeded the annoucement, Southgate explained that there were still concerns with injuries for some players, and are waiting after the end of UCL and EL finals to make the final decision until June 1st.

Anyway, been looking at the groups, and I'm struggling to predict which teams will end up in 2nd and 3rd places.
In Group A, the italians are the favorites, the rest could go either way.

Group B is similar, Belgium as favorites, and the rest are somewhat balanced, and any team could give Belgium some problems too.

Group C is a weird one, Netherlands are the favs, yet they could screw up against a team like Ukraine. North Macedonia could either be a "punching bag" that loses to everyone else, or could do what Iceland did in 2016.

Group D is very intriguing to me. England and Croatia might be somewhat equivalent, although Croatia probably lacks some squad depth. Even Czech Republic could cause trouble to those two, while Scotland could also be like Iceland.

Group E seems kinda balanced, except Slovakia, which clearly are the weakest team, but that doesn't mean anything. Spain likely goes first, but depends on how well they play. Both Poland and Sweden could cause major problems to Spain, being more physical sides.

Group F needs no introduction, it's literally anyone's game, even Hungary is far from an easy team.

That said, even getting 4 points in third place, might not be enough to go through. Any group could have 3rd place teams with 4 points.

Some of the warm up games have began with a lot more coming this week, not long to go now!

Gareth Southgate will need to trim his 33 man squad into a 26 man squad tomorrow, seven players will miss out and there are a lot of reports that Trent Alexander-Arnold will be one of them.

England's Trent Alexander-Arnold is out of the Euros after a tear in his quadricep means he will be out for 4-6 weeks, he picked up the injury late on in their warm up v Austria last night which they won 1-0, he had to be taken off as they had already used all 6 subs.

After all that fuss about him being included its a sad anti-climax to have him not even take part, Southgate can call up a replacement and will do so after the second warm up game against Romania on Sunday, it doesn't have to be another defender as he can pick a midfielder or a forward if he wants.

Euros starts a week tomorrow.

So the tournament start on Friday night, I will post this weekends games tomorrow.

@Famine are you going to update your original post??

Well, I suppose you don't have to, I'm sure we all know the groups now and who's in them.

Fans, players and staff flying out during a pandemic is a bit stupid, definitely would have been best to have it in one country, but its happening the way it is....

Even before that it was dumber than an antimony enema:

And then it's called 2020 but it's in 2021, and COVID is literally still a thing and so are travel restrictions, and WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

Because money and people are dumb.

Oh, I did forget this:

Russia: "How dare you show the bit of your country we invaded on your national outline on your Euro 2020 kits; we stole it fair and square"

https://www.espn.com/soccer/ukraine...-complain-to-uefa-over-ukraines-euro-2020-kit

And indeed they did it.

Well, I suppose you don't have to, I'm sure we all know the groups now and who's in them.

It wouldn't though, if fans were also included. Imagine one single country receiving in it's airports, fans from all over Europe, all at once? And hotels filled with fans, and the teams. How would it be better by cramming everyone in one single country? With no fans, yes, it would make more sense.
