Not that Top Gear couldn't use a change, but the BBC are getting rid of the one person they could keep and get away with any changes. While Hammond works well with Clarkson to make the show a little less serious and a little more humorous, they could absorb any losses in views that would come along if they replaced him. May is a bit of a last link to the old era when this show was still a car show, and Clarkson is a part of the furniture, and you could probably say, is Top Gear

I've seen a bit of old Top Gear, and a May, Clarkson, Needell doesn't sound too bad, but any changes to the casting would need a change to the formula. Replacing Hammond I feel would probably help push the show back in the direction of a 'car show' rather than a car 'show' more than it would turn off the people who are all about the jokes by being more serious.

tl;dr don't take Jeremy, take Richard instead!

I'd rather eat my own gall bladder than watch anything presented by Chris Evans... no thanks to THAT suggestion.

It's all too easy to speculate in the absence of facts with respect to the 'fracas' that occurred. Clearly Jeremy would require some kind of punitive measures if found to be guilty of whatever allegations there are, if they are indeed that serious but... seriously... There are two other presenters of the show and the final three episodes of this season are cancelled? Sucks...

It's just dawned on me that we may never actually see a P1/LaFerrari/918 showdown. Not a legitimate, televised one, even then not for a few years I'd suspect.

Number one problem with the show right there. Characters. Not actual persons.
Persons can be boring whilst characters mostly aren't ;)

Oh Mr May

I was watching some series one stuff the other day. He wasn't that bad. I'd sooner have seen Hammond replaced by James May in time for series two...

Being pedantic... but Series 2 was on the radio (wireless), wasn't it? That was long before the TV format was spawned.

Surprises me how much of you wouldn't mind Clarkson being sacked. He makes me laugh more than James May who is also a great character, so the only thing i would agree on is having hamster booted.
Personally, it's just that I think May is just as funny, but also much better at being informative at the same time. It's not that I don't think Clarkson is funny, just that May is better balanced :p

I don't really want to see any of those two go :p.

In either case, if James May is joking about it like that, I don't think he's all that worried.

Clarkson? "Fracas"? Clearly, it was the producer's fault. Clarkson isn't the sort to start a fracas; rather, he's more likely to unleash utter bedlam, and that clearly didn't happen here.

If you get rid of Jeremy Clarkson, you should just forget about making Top Gear itself.

Without Jeremy, Top Gear would be bland, un-engaging, and generally, 🤬.

Top Gear has become synonymous around the world with being the loudmouth, brash, but still respectable car show.

What makes Top Gear great is that it isn't 'nerdy' or all about the insignificant numbers. But when they do cross into that territory, they make it more interesting through their personality and add a bit of humor to it. Getting rid of just one of them, would throw the chemistry off and potentially ruin the show.

The only reason why people have an issue with Clarkson is because the world has shifted into a phase of being overly politically correct, if Jeremy did this sort of stuff 15yrs ago, nobody would care.

I've signed the petition in support of Clarkson, as I believe that he, most of the time, is being hard done by, due to the media.

I hope Jeremy stays, as without him, I'd just lose all interest in Top Gear, sadly.

EDIT- http://m.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-31828184

Hope that's not true, but Clarkson doesn't seem to fussed about it, if the column he did for The Sun is anything to go by.

That petition has reached 143,000 signatures already.

I've said it the last two times, with the N Word and Slope incidents. Top Gear is Clarkson, Top Gear is James May, Top Gear is Richard Hammond. Same as Two and a Half Men, you can't just get rid of one of the main guys and expect it to be anything like what it was before.

Replace Clarkson with someone who can actually bloody drive like Tiff Needell.

But Tiff Needell is as interesting as a piece of cardboard.

And last time I checked, it was a light entertainment show, not F1 or the Blancpain GT Series. I couldn't care less if they were a Jack-Whitehall-like driver or a Dan-Ric-like driver, it's about the joy I get from watching the show that matters most.

In my opinion they should have stopped making the current format of Top Gear some time ago, as they just can't make anything new out of it. Episodes have become in a way too predictable, the mostly scripted pattern goes, Clarkson and Hammond make immature jokes, a celebrity I've never heard of comes to a boring interview, sports car review with no actual review, an occasional good segment by May, which could be easily ruined by either of the two others and a "challenge" with more immature jokes. Since the series 5 the whole show has been going slowly but steadily downhill, and if they keep doing it for much longer the show will become basically what the US Top Gear is with different presenters.

In your opinion.

I much prefer him to Clarkson to be quite honest.

I respect Tiff. He's a decent host, and an obviously excellent driver... and was sad when Top Gear lost him, but honestly, there are guys who are much more interesting to listen to from behind the wheel.

-

Sad if the show gets cancelled, but better out on a high note of a season than on one of the dreary low ones from these past few years.

-

Does this mean I'm out of a job? :D

I almost think it would be interesting if they fire him. New Top Gear was great, but it feels like it passed it's peak a while ago and now it's just carrying on pushing out more of the same old same old.

I suspect it would take maybe twenty seconds for Clarkson to start another TV show if he was fired. I wouldn't be surprised if Hammond and May went with, or he'd find some others. He's hardly going to be starving to death in the gutter.

It would be quite interesting to see what would happen with a clean slate. I'd like to see what they could do with that once they're outside of the confines of what's expected of a Top Gear episode. Let's be honest, it's pretty formulaic these days.

I think Top Gear needs a new director instead of an actor.

The trio is fine. They just dont know where to go next.

Update: I just realized the Fracas incident.

https://forums.finalgear.com/top-gear/jeremy-clarkson-suspended-over-fracas-59360/

Its actually a bit shocking considering the Clarkson style of presenting over the freaking decade. Maybe BBC had enough soccer moms to do the thing?

Ignore. I read the wrong news article. Jeez what happened to Clarkson?

They have said year after year that the show cannot survive in is current format yet the directors keeping pumping out the same nonsense. TG stopped been a must watch programme for me years ago so yes I agree they need a new directors, new writers and a new format. There is nothing wrong with the presenters.

Is there any other job where you wouldn't be suspended for hitting a co-worker, let alone someone who is a senior member of the organisation? I can't think of one.

Boxer, maybe? Even then, you'd probably have a rough time if you tried to lay one on your manager.

Just imagine if Clarkson did get sacked and started a new Top Gear on Sky, with a mahooooosive budget.

Not out of the question given he has written for Murdoch papers since the 1990s.

I'm still skeptical this whole thing. If he was punched, where's the proof? Pictures? Anything? If I was punched by a celebrity, I'd certainly be taking pictures. Even if or when pictures do emerge, we need to beg the question of if he was provoked by the Producer or not. Anyone can be an arse then get decked but still be able to convince people that it was just a random lash-out.

The BBC remaining tight-lipped about ut, as well as the Producer and Clarkson, really don't help clearing those things up. But Social Media doesn't help either.

I see it as most.

Top gear without Clarkson is takiing the caracter out of the show.

It makes the show. His silly comments, his rage moments, his facials expression. You can't relace that.
Look at all the spin offs. They are far less succesful.
The Brand TopGear is quite highly rated money wise. BBC will shot themselves in the foot.

On Tiff, I like him. Love his calm voice (he voiced SuperCarChallange). But he can't replace Clarkson.

I could also see another channel give him a place.

Either way, we still will hear plenty of Clarkson. Just sad that the last episodes will probably never air if BBC keeps this attitude.

I wonder did Clarkson break his finger again on the face on somebody ???

You can't really change such a key part of Top Gear and call it Top Gear anymore.

And he's only 'suspended' thus far. Can't talk properly about replacements unless that becomes 'sacked'.

If this series is gone though that is a great shame. It was looking good for the first double-figures series in a while.

Oh. I was reading the news where Clarkson allegedly saying n word. Ignore the last commentatory.

Well not sure what really happened at that time. But there is some big depth to investigate.

Well the "same nonsense" its whats actually wrong, not the whole format. Make new ideas. Look for more experiences (like that endurance racing). Dont jab viewers about "this isnt a car show".

can't believe we are not getting an episode this week , maybe even the upcoming weeks as well , this series is being so good and so entertaining , it's a shame that this is happening , Top Gear needs to change networks fast.

Top Gear existed before Clarkson. Angela Rippon, Noel Edmonds, Tony Mason, Chris Goffey, William Woollard, Sue Baker and the delectable Julia Bradbury - glory days. Clarkson only joined the show in 1988 - and left again in 2001, with Steve Berry, Quentin Wilson and VBH taking over.

And that was back in the days it was a weekly hour - Jason Barlow was only on the show for 18 months and did more episodes than Hammond (not really, but not far off).

Saying he threw one in the producer's direction doesn't mean it connected with said producer. If that's the case, evidence might be rather light beyond what the two individuals involved say. Or witness reports.
