I have to say that the game is great but there are a few things that i miss. I miss qualifying and the reason is this... I like to make the game very challenging and drive a car that is either equal to the AI or far below, and the first place AI car is always faster than everyone else, now in 2 or 4 laps you wont be able to get into first place on all eqaul cars not without bashing the oppisition out of the way. So qualifying would get you up to the front three to hold off the back markers and still be able to put pressure on the front. I also dontt like the rolling starts, i pride myself in mastering starts and getting the grip just right and a rolling start sometimes messes up and puts you in the dirt before the start and you are about 5 car lengths back. There is also the issue of the AI itself, they said that they were going to be improved alot but this i can not see the still drive if you dont even exists, staying to there line no matter what happens in front of them. Like i said dont get me wrong I have had a smile on my face since 4pm yesterday and have not stopped playing it but just a few gripes instead of all praise. Ohhh and coffee breaks are exactly that...just breaks from the tests....i think if you get all gold on every cofee break there might be a reward or it might go in with having all gold on every test but have not seen anything written about it yet. Ohhhh and no online play sucks....ohh well. Have fun!!!!! I will be!!!! :)

Oi. The shaking camera in the collision made me nauseous...I had a long wreck(basically, I wrecked the whole way down Tokyo's front straight. First hitting the wall a few times, and getting hit by the AI).

It is quite disorienting~ I like it it feels like a real collision where your head would jerk around confusing the view... I had a high speed crash that I've lost control on.. The car flew all over the track crashing into everything... I had no clue what the hell was going on around mt surroundings! Man that was cool to see...

I hate all those full lap time trial license tests - they are teh suck.

Any full-lap license test has the potential to be extremely annoying, but the B and A ones where you're following the pace car are probably the most legitimately useful tests in the game.

I just did A-10 (full lap at Suzuka in the RSX). If you look at the demo run, he gets 2'45.314 and you can tell it's not even all-out, but the gold time is only 2'48.000 and the bronze time is 3'00.000.

I'm not a big fan of having to race a long course over and over in a FWD turd, but anybody who can't bronze this test really doesn't need to be advancing beyond Sunday Cup. It took me almost two hours to get 2'47.887, and the run was far from elegant, but the only time I've ever driven Suzuka was in Pole Potition, and now I feel pretty comfortable with it. The tests seem to go together pretty well, too; A-4 does a pretty good job of preparing you for taking the big turn in A-10 at 95 MPH which would otherwise be pretty frustrating to get right since it's towards the end of a 3-minute lap.

16 tests per license does seem like overkill, but so far the tests seem pretty fun and actually useful.

if you do the 'practice' it qualifies you for position
 
Wait....i dont see any pratice on the race screen????????? I'm just doing a race and an there is nothing there just race aspec bspec tune options and quit....no practice
 
Something got my nerves today about GT4. Those damn rolling starts which set you at a disadvantage from the beginning. I hate them.
 
I've just played it for 3 hours and all I can say is that this feels very much like real driving. The problem before with GT3 was that the first person view didnt have much of a reaction to breaking and accellerating. Now its dips and lifts when you change gear etc and especially when you brake. The phsyics are also much more real, losing control is easy but feels natural like driving a real car instead of like Richard Burns Rally where you never really got the feel of the car(still great game). The graphics are amazing, I never really liked seattle circuit before, but driving it again in GT4 really feels like you are racing through city streets ( could be one of my fav tracks now!).

Lets talk about the sound! I was able to buy a black 1990 RX-7 as my second car and oh man does it purr.

There are the minor jitter bugs but they don't distract from the game.

I looooove it. I started off doing the license tests. I was golding them for a while, then I decided I wanted to be playing the game NOW rather than in another hour, haha, so I backed out and loaded up my GT3 files. It was such a farkin PITA to make money in GT3 I don't feel bad at all about it. I've always wanted an M3 so I went ahead and got myself an Oxford green one - looks really sharp! I did the Sunday Cup and immediately felt bad as I finished 2 lap races more than a half lap ahead >_< I messed around for a while, choosing mods for the car and messing around on tracks to see what they looked like updated. Then I went to the Gymkhana and goofed off for a long while, lol. I backed out of there and... crashed! Yep, screen went black and never came back. :( sucked. I turned auto-save back on, :p, and I've gotta rerun the Sunday Cup, but that's ok... I'll probably get a crappier car to do it with, haha.

Anyway, I decided I wanted to see the Nurburgring. I let my gf pick the car (Arcade now) and I ended up hitting it for the first time in some huge Jensen Healey from 1974, lol. I was glad I found the 'quick tune' option that is available in arcade mode. You can change the car's HP +/- 20% and the weight +/- 10%. Sweet! I decided to take out the 86 Ruf next, and I had the most fun I've had in a driving game I can remember. Sooo sweet.

Now I've gotta do homework for a while, but I know all I'll be thinking about for the next few weeks will be about getting that Ruf in GT mode and spankin the Nurburngring with it (and remembering how to spell Nurburgring).

To summarize, WOOO!!

Edit: I wanted to add, I agree with what's already been said 9 times - the reaction weight changes and such are muuuch more realistic this time around, especially evident on a certain hilly German course :p. Touching a wheel in the dirt at 145 mph will get you messed up IRL, and now it'll have you spinning for a half mile in the game, too :)
 
I have 2 complaints.

1 being that the screen shaking is annoying, even though it only does it for like 3 seconds at one time and rarely, it still is annoying.

another being in photomode, the viewing screen is to small, its hard to get good shots unless you spend lots of time expirementing.

otherwise the rest of the game is so breathetaking, the sheer quantity of everything boggles the mind, and the physics are so incredible, especially when you lose control at 150mph, everything = incredible, need i say more.
 
Damn all I got to say is I was blown the bleep away from the IA R92CP graduation test. The sense of speed awesome.

I love this game and I dont even have the DFP.

There's a version over at Yahoo somewhere. Oddly enough, although it's different from the Japanese version, it's also different from the final U.S. version. I was somewhat surprised to see new shots in the final game than were in that "U.S. version" video that Yahoo posted.

Ah, well. Still an impressive video.. looks so much better on my TV at 60fps than it does on my little computer monitor. :)

you know what sucks? the fact, that US version is 50$ and our will be 85$ and you have in average 2-3 times bigger salaries....

Everywhere I know of in Europe has much higher taxes than anywhere in the US, even Cali. He's from Slovenia. Their income tax is 35% if you're dirt poor and 50% if you make $30K or more. Also, I'm not sure exactly how VAT works, but I think it's pretty much like sales tax. VAT is 20% in Slovenia, and I think it's 17.5% in most of the rest of Europe.

The 9% sales tax and other taxes in California really suck compared to the rest of the US, but it's nothing compared to most other places... although I think most people don't have half the bills to pay that Americans do.

1) THE MUSIC SUCKS!!!!
I refuse to listen to it.Turn it off at the first chance.
2) The load times get a little long.this might just be a pet peeve with me but it gets to be a pain after 7 hours.
I picked up my copy at noon yesterday.But I must say that it was worth the year + wait.

I also transfered over the 100,000 grand and started out with a S2000.This car rocks!!
 
I started the game up, transfered the money after winning the sunday cup (with a '97 MR2 G-limited), then bought a 3000GT VR-4 Turbo.

Fun times..I now own a garage full of RX-7's an both 8's..

No FB makes me want to cry though :(
 
The game is absolutely awesome. I am truly glad to see the sheer amount of gameplay I, (we) are going to have with this. I dropped off the console scene in '99 and drifted into PC gaming, (no racing, keyboard racing sucks), FPS's RPGS, etc... My wife and I bought my 11 year old a new PS2 slim and I took his old one. The slim came with GT3, which he isn't into cars yet so it was opened by me. I played Ridge Racer back in the day, and when I played GT3 for the first time in Dec. I was instantly addicted. I have been playing EVERYDAY since. Picked up GT4 yesterday during my lunch break, and the Boss kept me until 8:00 last night. Just my luck. I checked out the message boards yesterday and decided to go for the license test cars instead of transfering license and cash from GT3. But now have a dilema. I'm really taking a serious learning curve wish the new physics, especially with the stock cars. The extreme bobbing and weaving is cool but 'man'. I couldn't wait until I completed more than the B license test to get into the game. I ran the FF challenge with the Lupo I won instead of the Musabi, Kusabi, or whatever, (it was overkill in the Sunday Cup), and got hammered, great start but oversteer, without hitting the wall is much more damaging, than GT3, I am now at a point I have spent all of my cash with moderate upgrades to my Lupo, down to a 58% win ratio, and will have to clear the Sunday Cup and rerun a rediculous number of times to be able to either upgrade my Musabi, or get a better HP upgrade, or some tires that will stick to the road, haha, for my Lupo. I am considering 3 options; continue with my sucky win ratio, rerun Sunday cup (A FEW TIMES) for cash, or start over, apply myself and master the license test, to get a variety of cars, or stick to my get into the game approach and transfer cash (for cars, not upgrades) and license tests from GT3. Good advice greatly needed.

But to the thread topic; Sound, Graphics, Interface of practically every aspect of the game, Cars, Tracks (so far), I am truly impressed. The jitter thing is quite cool, very realistic, in real life when you nearly blow a turn things do get a little fuzzy. Auto save I could live without, at first I thought it was cool, until I realized I could not exit a game and reload the save point prior to entering a race with a car not suitable for the race in question. So disable that. The races are scattered around and will take a little getting used to but love the beautiful interface locating them.

I finally loaded up my first round of gameplay last night afterwork. After watching the intro [painfully with Panama] I was ready to race. I went into arcade mode and of course selected the "ring" for my first GT4 lap. After surfing thru MANY cars, I settled with the old school Celica in white. First impressions:

1) nice upgrade in graphics
2) excellent new physics engine

I got smoked by the other cars since I spun out several times. Ok, enough with this Arcade stuff, onto the GT mode.

First off, the new map is cool, more interactive [icons move and spin] just a prettier format. I chose NOT to move over any licence or $$$ to my new game, so I went to the pre-90s lot and picked up a red CRX. Sunday Cup was first stop and I was not prepared for the competition.

The new physics require much more concentration than GT3, grass, curbs, bumping other cars have a much more dramatic effect on handling. To be completely honest, half of the races I won outright, a couple I had to replay a couple times, even using a bit of bumping in the turns to overtake. Cheap, but effective. Once you win the series, you get a 8K prize car, and you can restart the Sunday Cup, RESETTING the series, and win the car again. Cool stuff.

Overall, I spent 5hrs [with breaks] and only got .8% into the game. Picked up a B licence with all silver with not TOO much heartache. After winning the Polo and freak show Mazda from the licences, I kinda wish they'd give you a more basic car, something older and simpler.

Man, after one sitting with GT4, I give it a 10/10, A+. Deep, deep gameplay with all of the EXACT features I appreciate: competative AI, beautiful replays, lots of tuning options, almost TOO many cars to choose, photomode [cool to document your progress], and polished tracks. Sure its not online, or no damage, but that's not what attracted me to the series in the first place.
 
I bought the game at about 1:30pm on tuesday the 22nd from Gamestop. I am absolutly in love with it. There are only 2 things in the game I am upset about.

Only 3 Mustangs!!!?!!?! The Mustang changed the automotive world and we only get 3!?

Also I hate the autosave after buying or selling cars!!! I use to love to do a trial and error with GT3. Buy a car mod it try it out then if its no good load game and try a different one. Now i have to use two memory cards to do the same thing... takes forever....

But dispite the gripes I love this game and its 100x better then GT3.... the physics engine is 100x better graphics 100x better...sounds 100x better...So i guess the game is about 300x better then GT3...
 
My first impression of the game is that the physics resemble the actual physics of a real car even more than with previous games. I noticed that hard to drive cars are more drivable, and good handling cars are not as good compare to GT3. The difference in handling from a front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and 4 wheel drive can be notice but you can adapt real quick to them (front wheel drives have more understeer than before, but respond much better to braking, while rear wheel drives have less oversteer).

One thing I noticed with the braking is that is more sensitive than before and you do noticed when you are braking to hard.

Using the Drive Force Pro is a blast, the wheel respond incredible to the Force Feed back. Drive driving through the LeMans straight at 230 MPH you can feel the pain...! Every bump on the road...! That part only, worth at least 30 of the 50 bucks that I pay for the game.

On the down side, I don't understand what is the idea of the photo mode. You can take photos and all, but I don't see a point. There is no relation to the gameplay at all. Unlike NFP U2 that the photos for the magazines need to be earned.

The same applies for the B-Mode. I tried once and the car came up last, way last, and on a race that I won twice with the same car...

My biggest disappointment has been finding BUGS... After a year and change... The game has BUGS...

Once in a while the screen shudder.
You can't remove the USB connection for the DFP because the game crashes. The same happens with the Memory Card. May be is my PS2... but never happened with any other game that I have.

My overall impression is that it is a great Driving/Racing simulation. Most have in your PS2 Collection and Most have if you are serious about racing simulations.

And lastly, the overall experience is indeed enhanced by the Drive Force Pro wheel. Even with the known issue with the issue with the Pedals, the 900 degree turn ratio of the wheel do add to the challenge and to the overall feeling of this simulation.
 
usa version has the additional 12 cars that europe will have?
and is there a truck inside which the road is straight enough to reach ur maximum speed?
 
I have been playing GT4 since Tuesday night, and here are my first impressions:

GRAPHICS. They look alot better. Some cars are modelled better than others, but in general an improvement over GT3 (which i had no complaints in the graphics department). The tracks are fanatastic to look at.

GAMEPLAY. Some people are saying that they don't like the driving, but can't put a finger on why. I can. It's harder. But it is not so hard, as to make casual players want to give up. It's too early into my game to tell, but the game mechanics seem different. After getting my B license, i got the Lupo car. In Sunday cup i won a couple races after an hour or so, but could do no better than second in the rest. Rather than spend my 10G on a used car i bought a chip for my Lupo. When i went back to race, i found that the AI were running better cars than before. So my car was better, but not in relation to the competition. So i got a racing exhaust, for a few more horsepower. Go back to race, but the AI is running better cars again! This carried on till i spent the 10G you start with. Rather than continue like this, i cut my loses and sold the lupo, and bought a second hand prelude SH. Same thing thing happened. As i upgraded the car, some of the AI cars would change. Eventually i won my races. I can't say if this will happen all the way through the game. I thought in GT3, The AI would run cars similiar to what you entered, but once you settled on a car, upgrading it would give you an advantage. Anyway it makes it challenging.

AI. I don't understand why some reviewers are saying the AI is the same. They are much more aggresive in positioning. In GT3 they would all stick politley to the racing line (like a beginner track day:)), and you could pass them like a row of ducks. Now they fight you for position. Also when you do pass, you will need to pay more attention to AI cars behind you. The game slows you down more when you hit another car or go off the track, so its easier to lose position when you make a mistake.

SOUND. I dont like the music, but thats a matter of personal choice. Theres alot of it and you can customize the play order, etc. The engines sound better on some cars, and the same (to my ears) as in GT3, for others.

MENUS. Some of the information should be in bigger letters, as it can get hard to read. However, its ordered pretty well. I wish that when new cars come into the used lots, they would be highlighted, or marked. It tells you new cars are added, but you can't tell which ones. Over all the GT mode map is pretty nice.

PHOTOMODE. This sounded like a useles featue, but when you see what they put into it, its amazing. I really like it and have a nice shot of every car i own.

IN GENERAL. Really not much to gripe about. Since tuesday I have slept very little, and work seems to drrraaggg onnnn, till i can get home and play again! If you like GT3 i think most people will love GT4.
