How can you tell what USB version you have? Granted there's only 2 versions, 1.1 and 2.0......but how can you tell? Device manager is useless in this situation from what I can tell.

I don't think there is a real way to check. You need to know when you're buying the hardware, like the motherboard, if it has USB 1.1 or 2.0.

Correct me if I'm wrong (which I probably am...), but I thought that USB 2.0 is fairly new. So, if your motherboard is over 2 years old, then it probably won't have it.

Well Pako, this here my friend is my wildest guess. Seeing as how I'm as computer literate as a cro-magnon, don't hold me to it.

I was recently at a store where there were some of these new USB 2.0 cables being sold. The only thing that I could make out to be different was that the cable itself was fatter. If I recall correctly from reading the package, the difference between USB 1.1 and 2.0 was that the wires were bigger and better insulated. Also I think that there was better integration of the wires to the actual USB plug.

But this is just what the package told me, so don't hold me accountable! :D ;)

you can also tell juss by the connection. im pretty sure usb 1.1 is like,a rectange, but usb 2.0 looks kinda like a house, its taller, and has 6 sides?? don't get it confuzed with a fire wire, which is also has a pretty high speed of transferring data(i can transfer about 1,000 songs in less than 10 minutes onto my ipod. 400mbps or something)

Its all universal, if you have 2.0 then you can use 1.1 usb products too. There is no size differences at all.

Huh, my device manager does not show the 2.0, but http://www.intel.com/design/motherb...dustryspecs.htm does show that my board complies with this standard....

As for this just go to your mobo web site. There should be a driver to install usb 2.0 under your support page. BTW if your using windows XP then make sure you have Service pack 1 installed also. As this alows XP to support 2.0.

See i didnt say before that my mother board just shows 2.0 in my device manager when i first built my comp. I had to go to my support page for my mobo to download the drivers for it. See what you can come up with.

yeaaaa, my bad. .hmm. . i wonder wut i could be thinking of then. . i kno its not firewire. . about the same size tho. . anybody know??

I have 2 USB Ports in the front of my case and 2 in the back.

Between the 2 back ports, on the case, it has 2 written. What confuses me is are the back two USB 2.0 or is it just stating the obvious, there is two USB Ports at the back?
