Why do people still come back and say the Mclaren F1 is a street legal track car, if you read into the history or design process of the car it was pretty much the opposite of that, its actually much closer to the vision/idea behind the Veyron, a luxury usable road car that does not compromise comfort or looks for performance, while still boasting ultimate performance. They had to modify it to compete with cars designed for racing/track by extending the rear of it for aerodynamic stability, when they designed the longtail version.
On the top gear test track I ran the Veyron 1 second faster than the Mclaren F1 in GT5, soft sports tyres and abs 1. Obviously it will vary from track to track, and even depending on the driver. In any cases most cars in GT5 are much faster around the top gear test track than they are in real life.
Edit - Further testing and revised driving got me running a fair bit faster in the Mclaren, but theres more time to be had from the Veyron, to be honest these cars are probably too close to call at this track. In GT5 you're looking in the area of a late 1:08 from both cars with good driving, and i'm sure some will get into the 1:07's perhaps better. both cars in standard trim with an oil change and soft sports, aids off but abs 1.
My idea of tuning an F1 to GTR standards and a Veyron to SS standards is harder than i thought, as the F1 GTR has less power than the standard road car, the Veyron is different aerodynamically. I suppose simply adding 200bhp to the Veyron while giving the F1 a full run over but no oil change after dealership or power upgrades. Again it is going to depend greatly on the track you choose and the tyres you use.
