Who cares though, it's not like they lost money after a ticket was sold.
Uh, yes they do. FOM gets 10% of all income from ticket sales if the event makes a profit. So if the race makes a $100 profit, FOM get $10 from it. But if people were buying tickets specifically for the V8 race, they would have to go through another ticketing agency, since the race isn't run by the Australian Grand Prix Commission. That means less money for FOM. And if FOM were selling the tickets to the V8 race, they wouldn't be able to get their cut of the profits, because the V8 race isn't a Grand Prix.

It won't happen. Bernie Ecclestone won't let a major category like V8 Supercars race as a round of its own championship in support of the Grand Prix. There would be too many incidences of people buying tickets solely for the V8s and leaving before the race.

Bernie doesn't have a issue with v8's in Abu Dhabi

It either an FOM event or a V8SC for ticketing purposes. And we all know which of those it is.
I dont think Bernie cares WHY people buy a ticket to his GP. Hey, if V8SC decide to assign championship points, then a few people might go who may have kept their money in their pocket otherwise. I think 05XR8 is on the money - it wont be championship event while there are different networks covering it. Has nothing to do with FOM.
Also, I wasnt asked what I wanted to see when I bought tickets to the Belgian GP last year. For all they know, I wanted to see GP2 and left before the F1 race started.

It's got nothing to do with what network is broadcasting the event. In the past, when Channel 10 held the rights to broadcast the V8's, the event was still a non-championship round.

It's more about the teams not caring whether Albert Park is a Championship round or not. Each team interviewed that didn't finish a race, said the same thing pretty much, "I guess since its not a championship round, that helps." Attitudes would change if it IS. In the same breath, as we saw, they still raced just as hard to win.

As far as ticket sales, me and my wife pretty much had Thursday and Friday at the track to ourselves. Many people work those days. Saturday was as if all of Australia and tourists were in attendance. People(those i spoke to and I'm sure the majority that showed) come because they have those days off for Qualifying Saturday Race day Sunday.

Because the V8s were never a major championship in Abu Dhabi. They are in Australia.

The series went to Abu Dhabi for two reasons: firstly, for the money; and secondly, so that the track would actually be used during a Grand Prix weekend.

Official details for the Texas races.

Australia’s action-packed V8 Supercars will put on a show for Texans to remember when the panel slamming monsters make their U.S. debut at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin this May (17-19).

Circuit of The Americas and V8 Supercars has unveiled the race formats as well as the official event name and logo, with the V8 Supercars Austin 400 being raced on the 2.3-mile National Circuit at the spectacular venue.

In what is the ultimate Australian invasion, the V8 Supercars of Ford, Holden, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG will take to the track with aggressive, do-or-die racing that is sure to have U.S. motorsport fans hungry for more.

V8 Supercars will contest four 100km sprints at the stunning Austin track with the unveiling of the race formats for the weekend, consisting of two races on Saturday and Sunday, preceded by a qualifying session each morning.

The ultimate intent is showing the massive motorsport heartland what V8 Supercar racing is all about, promising to leave a lasting impact on the Texan and American audiences. A very large contingent of Australians is lining up to attend with Sportsnet Tour packages being snapped up by Aussie fans.

“We want to put on an unforgettable show for Americans to remember,” V8 Supercars CEO David Malone said.

“Our aggressive style of racing is enormously popular in the states courtesy of our coverage on the SPEED network and online. There is a very large following amongst fans and U.S.-based categories, particularly the teams and drivers of NASCAR and IndyCar.

“As Australia’s premier motorsport category U.S. fans will be entertained and can expect the unexpected when 28 cars take to one of the world’s most challenging road courses ever designed.”

Teams and drivers are all but packed and eager to tackle the state-of-the-art track and four-time V8 Supercars Champion Jamie Whincup said he is pumped to get to Texas.

“We go out there and race hard, if it means bending a few panels here and there then so be it, I am sure fans won’t be disappointed. Everyone is out there to prove a point and take home that very first V8 Supercars Austin 400 trophy,” said Whincup.

“The Circuit of The Americas has been compared to Bathurst and if that is anything to go by, then people are going to love the action that is sure to unravel over the weekend. I can’t wait; it’s going to be an amazing experience.”

Former Aussie Champion and NASCAR stalwart Marcos Ambrose said the short track was ideally suited to his former category and he looked forward to watching his beloved V8 Supercars break into the American market.

“The V8s are running the short circuit and that is somewhat unknown… but I think it might be the better choice. It is going to be very technical,” Ambrose said.

“The first corner will be interesting. I was so, so afraid of a crisis situation at the start of the Formula 1 race but I guess they took care of each other and got through it.

“The problem is that you almost do a 180 (degree turn) and, with the wide entry, you can go in there four abreast, but four abreast cannot come out.”

Circuit of the Americas President Steve Sexton said preparations are well on track for the May event.

“Circuit of The Americas is excited to bring the V8 Supercars Austin 400 race to our new world-class venue in May,” Steve Sexton said.

“The series has a remarkable overseas following and a solid fan base here in the United States. The charismatic teams and drivers put on a great show, and with 28 cars fighting it out on track, the series offers the kind of rough-and-tumble competition that keeps race fans on the edge of their seats.

“We believe V8 Supercars is a great addition to our first full year of sports and entertainment programming in Austin, and that the series will be a hit with families looking for an action-packed weekend that is fun and affordable.”

I'm not a fan of that format, correct me if I'm wrong but each race is roughly 27 laps? Maybe we need one day with longer race then 2 sprints the next day.

I won't complain to be able to see them in person! I hope there is something available to see them upclose.

I would have like 2 sprint races each day at the GP!!! Unless its Bathurst, I prefer Sprint Races for V8s. But, even at Bathurst its a Sprint race for the last 15 laps. It gives more of a chance for hard racing. This leaves it to the racer to manage the car on the track more than the engineer in the pit. Proper touring car racing.

There usually is - at the Sydney 500, all the cars are kept in a pavillion that is open to the public, so you can get right up-close to them. I imagine the organisers would want to do something similar in Austin, so as to keep the race in the public consciousness.

Good news, can't wait. Bought my tickets a couple weeks ago.

One of the V8 test cars in the US right now at COTA. Chevy badge? :odd:

Strong Chevrolet presence expected for Austin 400

Chevrolet will become the V8 Supercars Championship’s unofficial fifth manufacturer when the Australian category takes to the Circuit of Americas in Austin, Texas, this May.

The Austin event marks an opportunity for parent company General Motors to leverage the relationship between the sister Holden and Chevrolet brands, which will soon see Holden’s VF Commodore go on sale in the USA as the Chevrolet SS.

The Chevrolet bow-tie was last seen in V8 Supercars at Bahrain in 2008, when Todd Kelly’s Holden Racing Team entry was re-badged as the kingdom’s then local export version of the Commodore VE, the Chevrolet Lumina.
A similar arrangement also saw the Walkinshaw-run Holden of Rick Kelly compete with Buick branding in Shanghai, China, in 2005.

V8 Supercars has already shipped its Holden Commodore VF-bodied Car of the Future prototype to Austin, where it is being used to promote the race. It is dressed with Chevrolet badgework.

A Holden Motor Sport spokesman told Speedcafe.com that a firm decision on its marketing plans with Chevrolet for Texas is yet to be made and that nothing is currently being ruled out.

A complete re-branding of the company’s flagship Holden Racing Team for the weekend is thought to be among the options under consideration.

Darrell Lea to sponsor Jonathon Webb for the rest of the season

Tekno Autosports driver Jonathon Webb will become the flag flyer for Darrell Lea chocolates in V8 Supercars for the rest of the season.
Webb’s Commodore was ordained in Darrell Lea signage at the Melbourne Grand Prix as a pre-cursor to a longer term deal being confirmed.
Tony Quinn, owner of the well known confectionary brand, has given the go ahead for the company to become the new primary sponsor on Webb’s Commodore.

That is quite surprising given the financial difficulties Darrell Lea were in a few months ago.
