Why is he limiting himself to a car based on nationality? Probably a discussion for a different thread, but why should one choose a product because it's the same place they live?

You dont see Belgians saying "I must have a Belgian car".

To pick a car purely based on nationality seems pointless.

Maybe he just prefers American cars? It's an entirely reasonable assumption.

Which is kind of moot because GTMail already hit the nail on the head. There were far better cars that GM sold on that platform than the Monte Carlo.

Pretty much.

If there is anything that the GM W-Body has going for it, it is that for the most part they are reliable cars. That's really about it. They have been consistently produced since 1988, with minimal overhauls on the engine and transmission options.

The Monte Carlo had some variants that were... okay. A supercharged SS version was nothing to get excited about, it wasn't any better than what was being produced by Pontiac, and I'd even say an argument could be made that the Impala SS with the exact same powertrain was a better car. Hell, I'd even argue that the Regal GS would have been the superior option.

If you're looking at W-Body vehicles, I'd stick to the Buick and Oldsmobile versions. They tend to ride and drive a bit better, and they all use the same bits and pieces underneath. There are far too many dudebros running around out here with modified Grand Prixs and Monte Carlos to count, I find them more annoying than anything.

...But if you really want a (surprisingly) fast, V6-powered, front-drive coupe, just get one of these:

Well hey if you like Subaru's, how bout an older 2.5RS?

Great cars. If you look hard enough, you could probably find em in decent condition for round $5-6K.

That's not a bad idea. Would probably be able to find them being privately sold but that's easier to work with. Would look nice as long as it isn't riced up.

From what I've seen, they've somehow managed to stay unriced for the most part. In fact I rarely ever see non WRX/STi Subaru's that have been "riced" or even modified. I guess as a whole Subaru owners are good to their cars. Since they're all lesbians, I suppose they don't really care about that sort of thing.:p

If you're going Japanese luxury, how bout a first gen Lexus LS?

Not a good idea unless you work for a Lexus dealer. Parts are quite expensive, and they're not as "simple" as one might think. The 1UZ motors are tough as nails (engine computers, less so), but air suspensions, wonky seat motors, instrument clusters, and factory radios are all four-digit part costs.

I think all modern Montes were from the same plant that built Impalas...viva la Canada.

Want an American car (not truck nor SUV), the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry's where it's at.

Supercharged. 240hp 280tq. U pipe, underdrive pully, and tune will put you close to 300hp and 340tq

Then you need to replace the trans every other week or so.

I can't believe there's demand for these things. OP, are you a NASCAR fan?

If an '03 Monte is what you want .... then go for it. Just make sure you know somebody who can carfax it for you. I know some people who have had this Gen. Monte and it has proven itself to be a good, long term dependable car for them. Maintenance costs are very reasonable (provided you do proper scheduled maintenance), insurance cost is reasonable. They really are not that bad of a car, go for it.
