Weird Shelf Organizers

Ok so it's now that I'm starting to become curious at my closet. There are these white, weird flat things screwed to the wall. What are they? How do you use them? Pictures:

Seriously. You just would slot in shelves that if thick enough will hold in place. They won't carry too much weight though.

Yes they will. The shelves likely have legs that attach to a lower slat while the surface anchors into a higher slat.

Otherwise, they must serve some other purpose. You can rub a stick on them and it's a musical instrument. Go nuts.

I've seen a similar design used as a CD rack. The edge of the disk just fits in the slot so most of the disk just floats. Can't see from the close-up shot if this is a similar design.

You guys are wrong, those ARE the shelves. Used to store and display really small stuff. The holes are to fit little floodlights to illuminate your tiny treasures.

Could also double as a washboard to clean your clothes after you wore them?

It's something somebody spent a lot of money on because they saw it on TV, then discovered the reality of its total uselessness when they went to set it up.

I was hoping for a use for them, see, when I moved in they were there but there were no shelves or anything just those things...
