Yes, you heard it right, I'm going to College and I'm only 14 (15 in a few weeks). :D The normal age is 16 here to go to College, but because I'm home educated (as most of you know) I have special permission to go there. There is no exceptions, I can still get qualifications and stuff when I'm this young, so it'll be a head start for me.

At the moment I'm only doing part-time courses, of:

English - Adult Literacy. I'm struggling at home with this a little and it's quite important to learn so it's a must. This course gets rid of the crappy Shakespeare and stuff like that. :)

CLAIT - this is to do with PC's. It's a well noticed qualification, and I'm into PC's too so this is great for me as well.

I must admit, I am very nervous as the moment, because the first lesson it tonight!. I'm more nervous than usual because (even though College is different) I'm going back into a learning envorment and is bringing back memories that I had at school. I just can't get rid of the nerves. :nervous: Fingers crossed after a few lessons and I pretty much like eveything they'll go away.

This thread may have a weak subject but I though I'd let you guys know. :)

Best of luck James...👍 👍 First off, you'll find that college/university is very different to school... by the very virtue of the fact that people who attend do so completely voluntarily because they really want to learn something useful, so it's a much more positive, productive and welcoming environment, so go ahead and enjoy it! :) First night nerves are perfectly understandable though... just be safe in the knowledge that you are moving on to bigger and better things! :D

Were you on 'Wife Swap', Channel 4, last night?

j/k

:)
No actualy.

Thanks Chris. That's exactly how I'm trying to think, that people that go to College want to learn and wont really mess around (I know nothing will be prefect). And I'm going to night classes to maximize that, because not many people really bother to go late unless they really want to learn right. ;) Plus the students will be older.

Edit: Thanks Juuso.

Don't worry about it man, judging from the quality of your posts, you don't seem to be too much of a dumbass ! :dopey: J/K you'll do fine! Lit can be very enjoyable if you view it as not a task or extra school work load, but a method of bettering yourself.

Don't worry about it - you're bound to be nervous of something new, its human nature, everyones the same - its just that some disguise this fact better than others. You'll find college to be a much nicer environment than school. You get treated like an adult and like you said - people are generally there because they want to be, not because they have to be.

The old saying goes 'school days are the best days of your life' - this is bollocks, i hated school, but i loved being at college.

Good luck with it, i hope you enjoy it and meet loads of new people 👍

- keep us informed with how you get on.

Will do. I'll write-up how tonight goes if I get the time afterwards.

I'm glad to hear that you arn't the guy from 'Wife Swap' last night - no one should have to live in a house that clean, or have a moustache that poor!

Anyone know when that show it repeated? I'll have to watch that.

I hate to say it about such a 'car-crash' reality TV show - but last nights episode was quite touching. I'm sure it will be on E4 if you get cable/satellite/freeview.

Yup, E4, I'll keep a look out then.

@Silencer: Thanks. I suppose you'll be in the same situation as me with meeting new people right?

Good luck man. Everything TM said is true, although it will be a little weird being so much younger than everyone else there, but you'll get over that and you'll love college.

CLAIT sucks. ECDL is better, takes you further and is much wider known.

Colege is complety different from school no ***** around that dont want to learn and go out their way to cause trouble. Loads of kids your age go to college and the enviroment is alot friendlier than a school playground. However your class might consist of quite older pupils but they will be very friendly and helpful. I enjoy college alot more than I ever did school as it comes without all the drama. Also if you dont like your course you can always transfer onto something else easily enough.

Congrats on going to college. It was the best six years of my life (I was indecisive about what I wanted to study, or where I wanted to go for that matter). You are right about the night classes. That is the best environment to learn in. On top of that it allows you the time to do stupid things, such as partying, and recovery time in the morning.

Learn lots and do great things. Oh, and don't forget that fun is allowed. I know too many people who burned out because they forgot to stop for some fun every now and then.

In response to posts about colleges being free of idiots...

I'm in University right now, and there are loads of idiots who are just here to party and not to learn. Fortunately though, I've gotten very lucky and these idiots are non-existent on my floor in residence. But, I've been hearing tons of stories from other people about some morons who have been drunk every night since the start of the semester (which was about a month ago now).

It might be different in the UK though.

But, have a ton of fun in college. I'm having the time of my life right now, and so far I have been doing all of my work, although the load has increased this week. But as said before, have some fun, and definitley don't burn out. But certainly don't neglect your studies.

Yah I've been working on that by going to highschool footballs games and other events and trying to make up some of the social skills you lose when your homeschooled. I guess its been working because I finally got a girl friend. :)

I think you'll be alright though cuz you went to regular school longer than I did.

Kids that go to uni in the UK are generally the ones that are forced/pushed on by their parents as they usally stayed on at secondary school till 18 and then went on to college. People who go to college in the UK are usually the ones that didnt like secondary school to much or got into trouble a lot.

Or in alot of people at my 6th form.. they can be bothered to get a job and think their EMA will be enough :ouch:

btw G.T. How comes you've been home educated? Just wondering.

Well if they went trough yr 11 without needing a job I dont see why they will need one in yr12/post 16/6th form. Sadly Im not entitled to EMA but I have been getting £160 a month for couple years now along with a bit of extra income from my wrong doings. Im going to get a job now however as I only go to college 2 and a half days a week.

G.T do you have to do key skills? According to my teacher a key skills certificate is equal to a maths and english gcse.

Good luck James!

I don't know much about this subject, but the best of luck, and i hope you get on well.

Well, guys, it was great and I really enjoyed it! :D I really wasn't expecting this. Everyone was older than me (that's great for me, but a little unusual), and was very helpful towards me, probably even more so becuase I'm younger than everyone else. :p

The English course was quite easy IMO, just homophones and "Free Writing" at the moment, but it will get harder I suppose. Everyone seemed they really liked to learn, and got on with their work in silence.

I really enjoyed it and I really do now what to go back again!

Well, I was bullied for some years and it slowly made me ill. So I had to be pulled out for my healths' sake. So that is why I was more nervous than usual for going to College because I'm very weary of what places are like.

I'm not sure about that. I have heard about it but I think I'll look into it sometime.

Hmmm, I'll look into that too. I went for the CLAIT because it said it was a well know qualification and I kind of ignored everything else for the time being.

I teach both. ECDL is much better. No one that comes in to us does CLAIT. It's pretty much all ECDL and Advanced ECDL.

So, anything you wanna know, just ask.

Yeah, OK, I'll keep that in mind. :)

Oh yeah, and THANK YOU everyone for supporting me. 👍
