What are the chances of seeing the GT6 premium's in GT7?

There are so many premium model cars missing from the GT7 car list that were in GT6 like the C63 AMG etc, is it likely that they'll return in updates do you think?
Will the 3D models simply be imported into GT7 without modification? Almost certainly not. Despite Polyphony's ******** about future proofing, the 3D models were never future proof.
Will those cars make their way back into the game with proper PS5 quality 3D models? Probably for a lot of them. They were included in the game in the first place because they were popular and relevant cars, and they're likely near the top of the list to get included in a new Gran Turismo game.

I wrote this post from the News and Discussion thread, might as well post it here too.

For those who are interested, these are the premium cars in GT6 that aren't in GT7......yet😏

GT Sport updates brought a few dozen (I'm away from my spreadsheet and will update this) cars from GT6, and I imagine that GT7 will continue this trend with nearly as many. We've got a few confirmed for launch already: Murcielago, Aqua etc, so I'd say it's safe to expect eventually NC MX-5, LFA, V16T, Gallardo, Murc LP670, FXX, two to five Premium WRXs and so on to return. Less popular models, or those similar to what we have already are a bit uncertain, e.g. I can't see the 2007 Atenza being added, and we'd be pretty lucky to see the Alfa Brera or Peugeot 307CC, for example.

I think a lot of them will come back because most of the data they need to put them in the game was already gathered when developing the PS3 games. The models aren't too bad 3D mesh wise either, they just need slight reworks and new sounds.

Its likely not as much work as say sourcing and making a brand new car that hasn't been in the games before. In that respect they were future proof on some level because trust me PD wouldn't even consider bringing cars like the F430 back if it wasn't for the fact that most of the work on the car was done already on the PS3 games.

I don't see any meaningful correlation between GT6's list of premium cars and GT7's car list as a whole. Many of those cars have been ignored so far, while GT7 sees the introduction of many cars that have not been featured in any previous games. It does not seem like they're reeling through old files looking for cars to remodel, but instead using new criteria. While it's a statistical certainty that they will add cars to GT7 that were premiums in GT6, it won't be because they were premiums in GT6. So, yes, some of them will come back in the future, but who knows which ones (or why).

I'm sure I remember Kaz saying that the GT5 and 6 premium cars "had so much detail they are ready for next Gen". Anyone else remember this?
Yep, and it was bollocks. They also said similar things about the GT4 cars.

The problem with future proofing is that not only is it really tough to predict what will be required of assets in the future, it's almost always going to be easier to create those assets in the future with more advanced tools and such. Trying to get ahead of the game by future proofing feels like it should be more efficient, but in practice it just isn't unless you're a literal Time Lord.

Far better to focus resources on creating the best game possible right now, and let the future worry about itself.

I could mention more premium cars missing on your list if I was to get picky about year variations, but those I did mention are quite unique.

Why? Many players care about differences in trim levels and variations in power output, and so does PD. Otherwise they wouldn’t add cars to GT7 like the Silvia Q’s when they already have the Silvia K’s of the S13 gen.

Wrong. Quite a few GT6 models were indeed future proof, and with future proof I mean they don’t have to be scratch made for future generations. Take the 1984 Ferrari GTO for example, which is more or less identical in GT Sport (and therefore GT7 as well) to it’s GT6 counterpart. Some textures might’ve been updated/tweaked, but the 3D model is, if not 100% identical, then at least very close to.

I'd like them too! I'd be overjoyed if we got some of those more down-to-earth Premiums back, especially some that aren't in any other games today, like the Mazda AZ-1, Alfa 147, '02 SL 55 and so on, or the truly underloved Honda Insight.
I can't forget the novelties: Kubelwagen and Schwimmwagen should race together with the Jeep! Mario Andretti's 1942 Hudson adds a very different flavour to time trials.

The prospect of getting some more returning Premiums, some totally redone Standards and new-to-series cars at the rate GTSport was getting content for 26 months has me very excited!

@emula probably can name what cars are almost straight ports

what makes them look dated in your opinion? i've never noticed that they looked inferior but now i want to see :)
In the Viper, the dash has very visible polygons, the odometer doesn't work, and the cockpit lighting looks very poor at night. All these issues exist in the GT5 version too. You can tell the textures have at least been upgraded though.

In the Mark IV GT40, the interior is just a mess tbh. Very poor textures, and very visible polygons.

There were in fact a number of cars from 5 & 6 that came to GTS with wiremeshes that were nearly or fully identical to the PS3 counterparts, often spottable around interior trim, crevices, and wheel wells (operating from old memory the Diablo, SLR, and one or more of the 20 mil Ferraris had these identifiable quirks). I do think a lot of the PS3 work - especially in 6 - genuinely is future proof, or at least close enough to require significantly less labor to touch-up than a than it would for a full rebuild from scratch.

We’re at the point in resolution where we have to zoom in real tight to see where the limits of the modeling are, which isn’t really something that happens frequently in core gameplay. Lately (meaning more the last 5-8 years) what’s been pushing visual fidelity in games has been textures and shading, that’s most of what provided the visual upgrade from GT6 premiums to GTS.

As others have stated, GTS had some cars added that were imported from GT6 - initially, Kaz mentioned this not being possible due to them not having physically based rendering materials, however as we know, they found a way to update the materials as a few of 6's premiums are in the game.

The good news is, they can convert GT6 cars to work and display properly in GTS' rendering engine. We know they can update models once they're in the game (would be odd if they couldn't), they've done it with standard cars, so I see no reason why they can't take GT6's premiums and bump up the poly count - although quite a few of GT6's premium cars had an extremely high poly count in photo mode, actually insane how they got that many to render in real time on a PS3 (at 30 FPS, but still). Adaptive tessellation worked wonders.

As for materials and textures, surely they can update them if needed as I imagine the base 3D model is textureless (it has to be, right?).

If they really wanted to chuck a load of cars into the game quicker than remodeling them, I think they could take a lot of GT6's premiums, touch them up and add them.

I guess it depends whether you include the materials properties as being part of the 3D model. That's the way I think of it, but if you consider the 3D model to only be the wireframe then sure.
Wrong. Quite a few GT6 models were indeed future proof, and with future proof I mean they don’t have to be scratch made for future generations. Perhaps I communicated poorly, but I was considering the textures to be part of the 3D model as it's not really usable in-game without them. The GTO didn't get added until post-release for GTS, so I assume that at least some work had to be done to bring it up to PS4 standards even if the wireframe was acceptable as is. If it was drag and drop then presumably it would have been in the release version.

I also wouldn't call anything that hasn't had to be made from scratch future proof, so I think we're talking about pretty different things here.

Honestly, the biggest differences between GT6 and what we’ve seen of GT7 so far, are the lighting and reflections. The models themselves I’d say are pretty much the same.
