Coming off of Hybrid/Flashpoint, put me in the mood for something different.
A handful of years ago while browsing Netflix for a new anime to watch, Netflix suggested Sound & Fury. Seemed to fit my interests - protagonist wearing a Samurai helmet/Oni facemask and a classic American muscle car. Should be interesting. I watched it from start to finish and it was not what I expected. It turned out to be one of my favorite albums that year, for Sound & Fury is not an anime...
Sturgill Simpson at the time was a rapidly rising Country music star. Carving his own path and gaining a lot of fans along the way. While touring, he decided his next album should be different from what came before it, so started writing Sound & Fury.
The music is a mix of electronica, funk, soul, rhythm and blues, with a country lyric. To accompany this and again to be different, Sturgill enlisted various anime and manga artists, giving them specific tracks to create anime for. The result of this was a 40 minute anime movie/anthology that was released on Netflix along side the album.
A lot of his fans were not pleased. Lucky for me, I didn't know Sturgill Simpson prior to starting Sound & Fury.
