I'd love to get a loan and get like a million bucks of crude oil, store it in a magic hidey hole for 30 years. And retire completely loaded.

Isn't that what the whole Middle East did?

Although, why do you NEED an Excursion in the first place? xD

Apparently some actually need the huge interior in those things. And I would rather drive an Excursion than an E van...

Considering I'm thinking of going to a scooter at this point an E van (whatever that is) sounds better than an Excursion. If you have 8 kids well.... hmm... tough [censored]? Pile in everyone. lol

if you have 8 kids, you should be more concerned with birth control than gas prices.

If I remember correctly Gil has quite a large family and needs the room in the Excursion when they all travel together. I have no problem with people driving and buying huge vehicles as long as they use it. Seeing one guy commute to and from work with something like and Excursion is always a head scratcher.

Yes I have six sons. And it is our family trip vehicle. Our extended family is flung pretty far afield.

And for Bones Brigade and V1P3R: No, we aren't Catholic, Yes we wanted that many kids.

And we looked at the Expedition and the Suburban.
The Suburban had everyone complaining about the lack of space before I got it out of the parking space. One of my boys is 6'3" over 300 lb, and wears a size 15 shoe. The others aren't as beefy, but my two "little" guys are at least 5' 10" and the Mini Van wasn't getting the job done.

The Expedition was ok, but the extra 3 feet of length, and the diesel in the Excursion allow us to travel without a roof box/bag. And I get better fuel economy than the Expedition.

I will admit that I used to take the Big Truck out when it snowed really bad. They don't plow some of the streets that I had to drive on.
As we go to Colorado Springs fairly often, in all types of weather, they don't plow either. The 4WD rocks!👍

That's why I NEED an Excursion.

No offense Gil, but I think in a few years, you may want to make some kind of sacrifice and get rid of that gigantic monster of a truck. I can't see gas prices 2 years from now being very kind on your wallet when you feel that thing up.

In the beast's defense, it's probably only used if there's lots of snow on the ground or they're going on a trip. Which means it needn't be refilled very often.

Biodiesel is a possibility...

Gas here has stabilized for the moment, but I'm expecting at least a $.20 cent jump tomorrow. Diesel is $4.65/gal.

No offense taken,
But as long as we take family vacations, In lieu of taking two or more vehicles, or being squished in a minivan, The Excursion is the only game in town.
Yes, it is freaking expensive to fuel up. 30 gallons at $4.60 or so a gallon is basically money by the pound going into the tank.
But anything else that is even close to comparable in size and accomodation, has poorer mileage, no 4WD, and less power.

My mini-van gets about 20-22 MPG. We don't all fit with reasonable comfort, and if everyone is aboard and our gear is in the roof bag, we are a bit of a hazard climbing over the mountains in Kentucky or Tennessee.

The Excursion gets 16-20 MPG (keep in mind it only has about 25,000 miles on it) everyone is comfortable, and I can climb the mountains without holding up traffic. I imagine if the truck was a little more "broken in" it would get somewhat better mileage.

But again, it isn't my daily driver.
-It's too expensive to run on a daily basis.
-It's too damn big to park easily.
-It has a turning circle of 50+ feet.
That said, it's perfect for putting on a straight, basically flat highway, with the cruise control set for about 2000 RPM, with 8 people and their gear for a week or more.

And yes, I wish BioWillie would take off across the country and drive the price of diesel thru the floor.

You ever thought about putting some added goodies on it to help out with the fuel mileage? Maybe an exhaust or a chip?

Yes I have considered it.
However, my top solution would be a "plug and play" reprogrammer, that would allow me to reboot stock programming when the beast went in for service.
But, a programmer is still about $500.
As often as the vehicle sits, It would take me a long time to save the 100+ gallons of fuel at an increase of 3-5 MPG to pay for itself.

Add to that, my wife is all about "Don't do anything that might void the warranty!"
If I keep mama happy, I can stay happy.

Anyone had their gas stolen?

yet?

Yeah, in the city closest to my little burg, there are reports now, too, of people drilling into tanks and retrieving fuel. Which goes to say about the intelligence of the city near me. What's really sad is they're panicking over low grade hovering around 3.999 a gallon right now. If a "Sacramento Spike" hit us.....who knows. Martial Law? Maybe that guy who made the "Farenheight 9/11" will make a movie about the social breakdown over gasoline...

Jetboy

Gas going up fast here. $3.95 today at most places. Thank goodness all 3 of my cars are still have a 75-80% of the tank left.

$3.95 isn't to bad, it's about $4.09 for regular around here for the most part some places are higher.

~$4.40 here (at the cheapest stations). It’s going to cost me a damn fortune to drive home Friday.

Oh here's a good one... This morning at 6:30 a.m. it was $4.44 a gal. When my dad and I got home later at 5:00 p.m. it was $4.54 a gal.

I'd really like to see someone give me a good explanation for that...

It was 10 degrees hotter though...

Gas prices in hard to reach areas are higher, but this is a little silly!
Spent last weekend down on Big Sur. Filled Porsche with Premium at $4.75/gallon in Emeryville when we left. Had to add a little fuel as we were down to 1/4 tank on Saturday afternoon, having done about 270 miles (on all the great twisty roads) and then remembered that the 3 gas stations along that stretch of Hwy 1 are mega-expensive! This was at the little Shell station. $5.799 for V-Power! :grumpy:

Wouldn't mind, but 30 miles North in Carmel-By-The-Sea it drops right back down to $4.50 - $4.80 like normal, although we were having too much fun to do a 60 mile detour just to save a few bucks on petrol! :)

Paying about that much for Regular Unleaded down this way. Meh.

$5.79? Wow does that station price gouge much?

You're right, it isn't too bad. But it's certainly a mood killer when gas stations decide they need to raise 12 cents per gallon in a 2 hour period. :ouch:

Nah, that's just how it works in San Francisco... Its always hyper-expensive there. That's why I was a bit puzzled when Kevin Rose chose the A3 3.2 over the 2.0T, particularly when the performance differences are minimal.

Meh...

I bought my second tank of gas in the Celica yesterday at $60+ when gas was $4.05 a gallon. But, I'm managing about 27 MPG (shes rated at 22/28 as I recall), so it wouldn't have been too different in the Jetta anyway.

Just about 15 gallons or so, its fudgging huge for a car that's essentially the size of a Corolla.
