What convertibles have turned your eyes?

I'm not talking about a Ferrari or a Lotus, but cars that the common man can afford.

The two convertibles that seem the most appealing to me are the 350Z, and the Pontiac Solstice.

Lotus Elise isn't that expensive, you can find a VERY lightly used one for around $40k, that is well within reach of the common man.

I'm not a fan of the 350Z convertable because I think it suffers from the same problem as Porsche 911 cabriolets. Their ass end is really bulky and to me isn't very appealing, just doesn't flow well in my eyes. Solstice is somewhat aesthetically pleasing but I've never been a big fan of Pontiacs looks in general, I think the front end is too buggy looking. Personally I like the S2000, which is also why I own one. Great lines, decent power, handles well, lots of potential, big aftermarket, Honda reliability, etc.

A Lotus Elise costs less than a Nissan 350Z in the UK.

I'm not a fan of convertibles (I can't see any advantages of them compared to the hardtop version (if there are both hard and soft top versions, that is)). However, if I had to choose an 'affordable' convertible I think it'd be a Honda S2000 or a Mazda MX-5.

Unless you go for one with an elephant (426 HEMI) or 440 packed under the hood, most common men can afford to put one in their garage.

The Solstice certainly grabbed my attention. It's stunning. The new MX5 Miata is really nice too. All in all I am not a convertible guy but those are the two top runners in the affordable group. Ther S2000 is a close third.

That's what owning an Alfa - or Lotus, TVR and so on - is all about. There may be only 10 days a year it all works well enough for you to drive it, but what a 10 days they are...

There or thereabouts - and therein is the nub. The GTV Spider isn't new any more. You can pick them up for £3k or less.

I don't like convertibles most of the time. I prefer hard-tops if I have to have one because I don't think I've ever seen a good looking clothe top.
