I was wondering how everyone was finding Gymkhana in DiRT 3. I find it OK, but not that great what are your thoughts?

If you look at the official forums, you'll see you might want to narrow the question a bit.

Do you mean:
Do I like gymkhana?( compared to rally, rallyx, etc)
Those that want gymkhana, is it well done?

A lot on the official forum, are complaining CM said it would be more rally focused (rather than x games) , and I think they view gymkhana going the opposite way.

Me, I love the rally/rallyx, though gymkhana is quite fun but perhaps as a side event/distraction.

Yeah its not bad actually, thought i was going to hate it but have ended up enjoying it and put a bit of time and effort into it :)

Its fun, but frustrating when you can't get things after a long time (at least for me)

I wish they focused more on racing, I could have done without gymkhana completely

I enjoy but there killing it by putting too much off it in the game. Would have been nice as an optional event instead of it appearing all the time in Dirt tour. Plus some of them are a bit too hard. I still enjoy it though and I'm glad its in the game, but not quite in the way I would've liked

I like it. It takes a little while to get good at it; I still can't go long without hitting anything. I have, however, worked out that the handbrake is your friend and can be used for just about everything. Some of the missions are ridiculously hard - Trailer Thrash and Thread the Needle (both of which involve jumping clean through open containers) require you to get the perfect balance of angle and speed just to avoid crashing into the edges of the container. And the Corkscrew jump seems to rely more on luck than anything else because there's no landing ramp (like when they did it in THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN), and it's one of the most difficult stunts you can attempt.

I would, however, have liked to have seen more tricks available. Like, for instance, driving on two wheels. Or performing a J-turn. Or reverse spins and donuts.

For me, this mode has its ups and downs. Most of the time the difficulty of this mode frustrates me to the point where I feel the need to complete any new Gymkhana event as soon as I can just to get it over and done with. Sometimes though I actually enjoy it, specifically the Battersea Compound missions. I spent a good amount of time messing about in the compound and I find that it's a good way to pass the time.

I'm sure that with more practice and as I progress further into the game, I might start to like Gymkhana more that I do now, but it'll never be as good as Rally or Rallycross in my opinion.

At first I looked at it like ''blah'' but the more I learn the more I see how it helps a lot during rally races, I am coming around to it, has potential.

Hair-pulling.

I fail to connect gymkhana with off-road driving as the feel of the car is completely different... (so far for me anyway).

It's not that it's super-duper hard to perform, it's just difficult to platinum, which is what I go for each time.

Gymkhana is perhaps best in party mode, which can be very chaotic. I actually found it's a really good way to improve your gymkhana skills.

I mentioned in my last post that there's a gymkhana missions called Trailer Thash. You have to go into the power station itself and find a ramp tucked away in one of the corners. The idea is that you accelerate up to the ramp and then leap through one of the container trucks that you slide under in the parking lot. To clear the mission, you pretty much have to fly straight through it without touching any of the walls. You have to balance the speed and the angle just right - if you go to slow, you won't make the jump; too quick, and you'll jump too high and crash. It's the same with the angle; if you get it wrong, you'll hit the side of the container. So I was playing Transporter on the full compound last night, and I had to get the flag from under the pier to the bottom end of the parking lot. I was originally just going to charge through the station, but someone came at me and I had to go left, away from the exit. I knew the ramp leading to the open trailer was another way out, but I could never get it right. I went for it anyway, and managed to get the angle and speed dead right, and cleared the jump. I didn't actually win the point because the duty phone rang and I had to log off, but I went back into gymkhana mode later and managed to repeat what I did.

I'm with dchPSUone. Ef gymkhana. Why does every damn extreme sport have to have some stupid trick version that only appeals to 14 year olds, LAX bros, and people who only buy their clothes from Pac Sun? I think this feature would be fine in the game if I didn't HAVE to do the crap before moving on.

Lol haters gunna hate. It's pretty fun TBH. Most people here are complaining beacuase it's "too hard". Yeah riiight...

I actually enjoy it to be honest and I definitely welcome it more than all the truck racing they implemented in Dirt 2. I consider it more of training levels than anything else, sort of like GT and their license system.

Overall I'm happy with the mode, now if only PS store would open again so I can unlock my VIP pass.

I'm not struggling as much anymore, in fact I get platinum or 1st in a few tries now... But never the less, I still enjoy off-road driving more than redlining on pavement.

I don't mind it. I would like if there was a mode where you can drive through the battersea compound for as long as you wish though.

There is. If you finish off the first season of the Dirt Tour, you unlock the Battersea Compound parking lot. If you complete the second and third seasons, you'll also open up the depot, waterfront and station. And if you complete certain missions in the free run mode, you'll be able to join all four together as one and have free rein over the entire thing. It's actually quite big; the depot, waterfront and station are all of comparable size to the parking lot (though I'd say the depot and waterfront are slightly larger). If you've finished off the first season and haven't unlocked it yet, try doubling back and make sure you've placed in every event and challenge.

I like Gymkhana because I'm good at it and I love taking photos of it, but my favourite discipline is rallycross because it's a mix of rally and Gymkhana.

Well, you just have to complete the final of the first season - the Gymkhana Academy, which will teach you the basics - to unlock it.

You can also do the LA and Monaco gymkhana events in single race and time trial. They're not as elaborate or sophisticated as the Battersea Compound, though.

I'm mixed on the gymkhana stuff, though I like the drifting and tricks, I don't like the freestyle points based events much because it forces me to just mash together any trick possible and have no real system or fluidity to it other then just pile together any old trick to get points. The challenges on the other hand like the speedruns I really like and the compound is much more enjoyable than the closed arenas.

Once you learn the layouts, you'll start stringing tricks together the way you like because you'll be able to plot your run the way you want. I've noticed it on the Monaco stages in particular.

Oh I have no problem getting points, you string together the closest tricks til you get the 3x then just hold that multiplier anyway possible, trying to keep ahold of blocks til that 3x seems to work to. It's an easy discipline I just don't enjoy that way I feel forced to just trick after trick after trick, you can link them together very easily in drifts but it still somehow doesn't sit with me. I don't hate it to clarify, it's just ok.

To put another way, the freestyle feels like COD online does to me, the area is a specifically designed arena to give maximum action but it feels artificial with the points and whatnot. The challenges and general free roam however feel like Battlefield to me, it looks less like an environment designed just for points and you get a much better atmosphere from it, you're allowed to use 'tricks' as a means to complete challenges rather then a neccessity in some of the types. Though the fixed order challenges would appear to negate this, there's usually a decent enough break in the constant action to make it feel like a real routine.

Argh, I'm getting frustrated by some of the missions. I've only got about fifteen to go, and most of them are drifts. Getting the game to recognise that you've pulled off a successful trick can be very hard sometimes; I was sure I landed the one-eighty jump earlier tonight, but there was no love.

Speaking of missions, I still haven't been able to land a 180 off the ramp.

Perhaps, we should contribute to a list of how to beat certain missions?

Well I have the 80 as of last night, someone asked about the 180 in another thread so I won't repeat how I did it here (it's a help thread). You can always look them up on Youtube also, but I'm happy to help where I can.

I hated the challenges, found them annoyingly frustrating, getting the platinums was just annoying rather than fun, but when the free run mode with missions opened up I enjoyed that a lot more.

Not as much rallying in this game as i'd hoped so far.
