What do you think of Gymkhana?

I don't mind gymkhana, but the fact that you have to do it as part of the career mode is annoying me.

I want to rally, and so far I'm really not getting the "60% of the game is rally" feeling which was being promoted. And the guilty party seems like it's gymkhana. Like they suddenly changed their minds and added in way more gymkhana and forgot to warn us.

gYmkhana = waste of disc space. Annoying. Career interruption, more childish than the coffee breaks in GT4 Prologue (and GT4 also IIRC)

Then again, this is a business and if having this mode makes Codies sell more discs I only have to understand. Overall, I like DiRT3, even with this annoying thing I have to overcome to proceede.

I actually really like the Gymkhana events. Don't get me wrong ... I love stage rally and the trailblazer events, but Gymhana is a load of fun. IT's the kind of stuff I'd go out and do in my own car if I could afford the tickets and tires.

Yes, it's not much different than the standard "drift" mode in most titles these days, but I like it much better for some reason. I don't really see it as part of the "rally" area of the game. It's a completely different discipline. The only connection is the cars used.

What I don't get are the drift events ... is that even a real thing? Are there really "down and back" drift events held on rally stages anywhere?

I'd say is good solid as free roam but pointless as a competition.
Anything that is based on a a scale where points are determined by opinion rather than measurable numbers is just dumb.
It makes great YouTube videos and is fun in its own respect but all I want is the DC compound as far it goes no challenges no career components.
But over all I'd give it a pass.
Id also love an airfield setup like seen on topgear with ken block and James may

They should have put it in a GRID sequel, or some other street racing game if they ever make a NFS-ish title.

Having bent my Dirt3 disk in half on purpose, i reinstalled Dirt2 to finish the few events I have left, and I just grabbed the original Dirt on steam. I considered ordering WRC, but I think ill just play some old Dirt and get back to iracing.

I tend to agree with this. I can't stand it but I would be more okay with it if it was just a free-roam playground instead of embedded in the Tour. That and I'm freakin' sick of trying for platinum medals. The expectations are 🤬 absurd.

I fixed that last sentence for you. If Ken Block's face was in this game saying "upload that clip to youtube, amigo" I would shove the disc down his throat.

Why is it in there? Because the videos related to it and have probably done more for rallying and such in the past couple of years than any other source has done for a long time, collecting over 50 million views between 3 and that's ignoring the Top Gear feature. Those 'stupid' gymkhana videos have promoted the sport as a whole, along with things like X games, which ultimately helps the sport survive. Some people will buy the game largely due to gymkhana, driving the games sales and introducing them to other forms of rallying and off-road racing along the way.

Frankly Codemasters would have been foolish to ignore such a viral discipline, people will want to imitate what they saw in those videos and that will bring Codies a big cash boost which they can use for bigger and better things. I know plenty of people who don't even know what WRC, Rallycross and hillclimbing is, but ask them what gymkhana is and they'll think to those videos.

It should perhaps be avoidable is all I'd say, the points thing and such is because alot of people like to compete (just look how many drifting fans out there are obsessed with winning), though I personally don't think it's really a competitive thing. Not to mention you'd be surprised how some of the techniques prove useful in other events, particularly the tight head to head runs and trailblazer where sliding is a very useful tool and gymkhana helps with precise drifting even though it can be practice elsewhere.

Seriously, here I don't know ANYONE who knows what Gymkhana is. If I ask for an european, or asian, they'll probably answer: "It's that drifting thing with this Ken dude, right?". Dirt has probably sold more copies then people downloaded the FREE WRC demo and purchased it combined, competition rallying is becoming a niche sport now and by adding mainstream attractions Codemasters are driving themselves and improving their own performance.

Gymkhana as a sport is not very popular in the same way, it's not televised much and so on, but it gets way more viewers on those Ken Block videos (and check the video stats it's getting most in Europe and all of America, the continent and yes that includes your own country infact it's Asia and Africa as a whole who don't bring the views). The 3rd in the series is the 3rd most viewed in it's category of all time, I challenge you to find a rally video even close.

Younger generations will learn more from Dirt 3 about rallying and off-road racing from it's car to the nature of the sport then they probably have in the last 10 years, and if they're attracted in by gymkhana and it helps feed in more popularity to roots rallying then I see no reason to be so hateful of it.

I was surprised by liking gymkhana in season 1. A whole lot. I never used my wheel before in this manner (just spinning furiously in circles).

But in season 2 this gymkhana event (gym sprint 01 - DC Compound) where you supposed to do everything in order is killing the fun. But it appears to be optional so its all good. But this level is frustrating for someone like me that barely got Silver in season 1 finale. You're supposed to 1st jump this bridge thing. Cool. But then you supposed to spin in this tight little corner. fun sucker . Its really frustrating for noobs to get into that tight space. After that I have no idea where to go next. There's this red arrow pointing down at this wrecker....

I will try to make an effort and go check youtube vids.

If you're struggling with doing donuts, use the handbrake to step the back end out. You can also adjust the rear brake bias to make oversteering easier.

As for the challenges, try driving through them a few times to work out which tricks you have to do and where. Then go for a speed run. The game will always tell you which trick is expected and when. I suspect that after the jump and the dnout, you will have to drift under the trailers.

Does anyone have any tips/setups for Smash Tutorial and Drift Tutorial? These platinums are killing me. I watched videos but it's one of those things where I clearly know what is supposed to be done I just can't do it. I tried putting in a strong diff and didn't notice any difference in either one. That did help with the donut one though.

In the smash tutorial, I can't for the life of me donut around those concrete beams without nailing them. Maybe it's an angle issue but I've tried different ones and it's royally pissing me off. Drift, well, I don't know where to begin with that, because even if I do well, if it's not 100% flawless, it's not platinum. Might never get that one.

Yeah I tried that too.

For the drift tutorial, should all handbrake be used? No actual brake at all? I tried grabbing the handbrake around the concrete in the smash one but can't do it. Maybe today's not my day.

I've been using the handbrake but not this 'rear brake bias' I will be certain to give that a try thanks very much once again 👍

Start turning in, then squeeze the handbrake. That will turn the rear of the car around. As soon as you feel it stepping out, flip back across to opposite lock to control the slide. It may take some practice, but there's nothing to say you have to get it right first go.

Also, make the dif stronger and you should get more oversteer, leave the gear ratios normal and hold it in 2nd, you could also lower downforce for yet more oversteer however points seem alot based on speed so you may want to try even adding some or leaving it alone.

Personally first time I did it I had minimum downforce, strongest dif no other changes and got ~148,000. Generally for gymkhana events that's the first thing I do for set up, change downforce up if it's a timed event though, and I'll often shorten the gear ratios to the maximum as well as it gives you more power more of the time. However for this event leave the ratios alone as you only need to really go one speed, try not to scrub speed where you can and then just do your best to keep it smooth and flowing.

Gymkhana has long roots in Europe especially the Scandinavian region, it's an evolution of auto crossing/slalom, just because Ken Block made it a pop culture thing doesn't mean its history are to be discredited.

I unlocked the Depot the other day and I absolutely love it. The car feels realistic when it's sliding etc whereas in rally it's harder to slide, even though you're on gravel. I even decrease the downforce, make the diff stronger and sure you slide more, but it's not the fastest way through a stage on Dirt. Whereas irl, rally requires much more sliding.

So for me Gymkhana > Rally.

Still not seeing it, quote it for me because if you're referring to Aderrm you've read it wrong, he's using a '>' sign to denote that they prefer gymkhana to rallying in Dirt which is nothing to do with saying one is the same as another. If you mean somewhere else, quote it please.
