What driving aids do you use ?

Abs at 1, sometimes traction control at 1 on more powerful rwd cars, all other aids are for novice rookies in my opinion especially Srf.
 
Yep, just ABS 1 for me, but if I'm cruising I normally turn that off too, just for fun.
With the more powerful cars, I just make the first couple of gears a bit longer to counter wheelspin. A bit elaborate but that's the way I like it.
 
ABS 1, rest are off. TCS only slows me down, ASM only slows me down, I forgot what active steering was and Skid Recovery Force is a retarded beginner's thing that shouldn't even be in the game. I also use controller steering sensitivity on 7 for everything except Ferrari F1s and the Red Bull X2010s, for which I set it to 5.

ironically, i never have any on. i suck on most courses but its improved my game tremendously. plus, i can now basically own the dirt/snow courses :)
 
TC on 1 (on cars over approx 500bhp) and ABS nearly always at 3 as it seems to allow just enough control in braking through corners.

That was what my daughter asked me and those were her settings!!!!!!!!!! :sly:

Aids slow you down, so I use the minimum required to drive a car smoothly with a sixaxis controller. Usually, just TCS = 1, ABS = 1, and Steering at 4 or 5.
 
i use abs 1 usually.

i only used the asm for the elise top gear track special event. other wise all else always off. i use a controller so abs on 0 is kinda tough.

See, the problem is that her Controller Steering Sensitivity should be set at -2.


And most people I see online use nothing but ABS, sometimes TC. At most 20% use some of the others. Maybe I'm just good at picking rooms.

WOW!! It's been a while since I've seen the name "Morgoth". They were a very cool band back in the day! 👍

Anyways, I like to have more sensitivity on the steering, so I set her up with a +5 and she did much better...with a couple of spinouts at first. LOL At 0 or lower, you have to start steering earlier than what you think would work.
 
I still have a couple of their CD's actually. Maybe I should give a listen, it's been some time.

And the -2 sensitivity comment was in my sarcastic voice ;). The little testing I did with the controller, I couldn't stand it at less than +2. But then again I can't steer worth anything with the controller. Gas and brake were ok even with no assists, but my steering was just plain AWFUL.

Usually:
ABS = 1
TCS = 0
SRF = Off
ASM = Off
Steering Assist = Off

When I'm race however I turn TCS between 1 to 3 depending on the Car. In the case of the Audi R10 I use TCS 5. I usually dislike aids because they don't give you a true representation of the car your driving and how far you can push it but when I want to race and just be consistent then aids help me a lot.

Skid Recovery Force just somehow gives your tires traction after they lost traction, making it almost impossible to spin out and making your lap times faster. Nothing's wrong with ASM because as you say it is common among cars these days. I started out by using TCS on 1 and ASM enabled as these are good for beginners.
 
ok here's my question, and this comes from a great understanding of automobile engineering and how aids have greatly improved cars performance over the years (not what I read off GT, talking about rebuilt engines, rear ends, and grew up around racing in the family etc):

How in the world does ABS slow you down? ABS modulates braking force "APPLIED", it doesn't all of a sudden start slowing you down, it keeps you from locking up the wheels and provide extra traction in braking. If this is a true simulation as in other games, ABS doesn't slow you down. Its ridiculous if you think ABS slows you down, if anything it helps you in extreme braking.

Some of you might have this confused with ASM (Active Stability Management). This in real life pulses the brakes if the cars sensors sense extra wheel spin or lateral movement outside normal parameters....this will slow you down in certain circumstances I can see.

TCS, Traction Control System helps with "retarding" the torque of the engine by communicating with the engines computer or transmission and releases less torque for smoother launches. This is greatly emulated in the game. Alot of people that run 4wd cars disable this functionality I feel to give them an added "one up" on the competition taht run either RWD or RRWD cars that will usually outcorner them in the turns. I'm not saying all but I've noticed most hosts do this and run AWD or 4WD cars, not because they want to be hardcore. Also keep in mind that in just about all modern motorsport (maybe not NASCAR or certain motosport) TCS is used as a system to be more competitive, not because you're a "lamer" or other choice word. Its heavily used in all weather races (Enduro, LeMans, F1, etc etc) for safety, increased speed, efficiency, and mong all things better cornering speed.

Some of you really need to understand the engineering aspects of racing first before thinking that certain aspects will make you faster.

I personally run TCS off and on mild (3,4, or 5 depending on situation and car, namely Yellowbird with 730hp, with less then 600 hp I start lowering TCS, <500hp down to 0). Certain cars need it and certain cars (namely Skyline GTR, Evo) that most of you run without shame all the time. No honor in that, its a flipping 4wd car 2x more grip. I run an Audi RS4, RS6, R8 (road car) all the time with no TCS....so? Whats the big deal.

What I want to see is those of you who don't run TCS and no ABS and MT run Ruf's in a competitive race on the Norde. Oh btw don't wreck.

Now that gets the Chuck Norris seal of approval.

Remember kids turning down your ABS to 1 only hurts you. If I had a penny for every guy I saw had their ABS turned to 1 and locked up their brakes, I'd be a rich man. Has nothing to do with guts, has to do with using your head.

First: Who said ABS makes you slower? I went back through this thread and can't find anybody making that claim. People claim that ASM and TC make slow you down, which they do(in order to help make you consistently faster).

Second: Many, if not most, forms of motorsport, actually don't allow TC, or only allow it on certain cars or for certain drivers, or otherwise closely regulate it. It's been outlawed in F1 for some time now, although they find various other fancy ways to try to get some of it's effect without actually using "Traction Control."

Third: What are you on about? This isn't the "why do you guys get such an ego trip for using no aids" thread. OP asked what aids people used. People replied by stating what aids they used. Some said why. Some drivers don't like the feeling of the aids, just like some real life drivers in series like LMS/ALMS(or so I'm told) choose not to use TC even though it's allowed. Some people say they don't like them because the game's versions aren't "realistic" to the specific systems used on real cars.

I don't speak for anyone else, but personally, I prefer the feel of the game using no aids. Doesn't bother me what anybody else uses. Again, I don't know what other's reasons are but I tend to assume most people use ABS at 1 because they like the way it feels -- makes the car not quite as quick to lock as with it on 0 but still feels fairly free and like it's directly under your control.
