What driving aids do you use ?

When I was checking what setting the top academy drivers were using, I noticed

Active Steering = Strong

So I set mine the same and took about 4 seconds off my time.

However, the difference is not always this big and sometimes it feels like a disadvange.

Anyway, abs on 1, everything else off and steering on 0, unless I'm using FGT or X2010, then it's on 2 or 3

All off including abs. Learnt that way back on Forza 2, and stuck with it through Forza 3, GT5 and now Shift 2. I also use a wheel since February.

I use traction control at 1, ABS 1 and for the moment skid recovery force.

First time I drove without skid recovery force was online, I'd been playing GT5 for months with skid recovery on and as a dumb online newbie I blundered my way straight into a room with skid recovery prohibited (didn't know any better) and my car was all of a sudden undriveable, I mean literally undriveable.

Every time I turned I spun right out, couldn't understand what was going on I just thought it was these 'different online physics' everyone keeps banging on about. I went back into A-spec and all was well again.

I see no need to turn it off, I don't feel less of a man or anything!

Most of my online buddys use it anyway.

That's exactly what i figured... that people just don't know they're on. Why would you unless you really look at those things?
And I bet if your car is tuned when you have SRF on, it would certainly be undrivable with it off. It requires a different tuning, I should think.

And yeah, the "online physics" - all that means is that track grip is set to real, and the aids are turned off, ... or if someone puts race quality at "standard" or "poor" instead of "high"
And SOMETIMES it could mean some people experience latency because of any number of reasons. (Most of which can be fixed and made better by a few simple things.)

And it's a game... We all don't need to be proud heros if the objective is to have fun - whatever works, right?
On unfamiliar tracks, my boyfriend always says to me, "don't be proud put the driving line ON" :D

I only use some aids like power steering and ASM on LMPs and Group C cars, but if they're any slower than that I use no aids.

All aids off with cars not fitted with ABS in real life (ie. classic cars) but if they came with ABS then it's ABS - 1. Steering sensitivity is also on 0.

I have all of my aids turned off/all the way down except ABS, which is set to 1. However sometimes I turn on TCS and set the no. to around 1-5 If I'm driving a technical race car/F1/X2010. Also, steering sensitivity is set to 1.

My bf said it should work how you describe. But it doesn't seem to.
And proof to me is that in a couple of the license tests... My bf said "turn abs off you'll go faster". I did it, and the car actually went faster! Maybe it was my imagination?
Otherwise I leave the ABS @ 1. I've never considered putting it higher.

ABS is only slowing you down when your braking. In some of the license test with very little braking I turn it off. For the tests that make you ride the brake through corners I usually turn it to 10. I suspect you felt like you were going faster because the difference between a slight tap on the brake with ABS off compared to ABS 1 is night and day.

For normal racing I'm in the same boat as most people ABS 1 the rest off.

ABS 1, TCS is only for high-powered cars, even then I only set it to 1.

I've played with different ABS settings, 1 is plenty except for a few tracks where you get up to huge speeds (>200 MPH) and then have to suddenly stop for sharp turns. Higher ABS settings are the difference between the car losing its mind and keeping stable in those situations.

For AWD cars, even 700+ HP ones, traction control seems to just reduce performance with no upside. For modern RWD cars with truly immense power I'll turn up the traction control some.

If I'm grinding a race with a car I don't even like I'll use active steering or active stability if it's a very twitchy car just so I can get it over with.

Its all about understanding what these aids actually do, you have to experiment yourself.

I was experimenting with a maxed out Veyron at Monza, all aids off and comfort hard tyres.

200mph+ and slam on the brakes........er you can stop when you're ready!!

I see what you mean... When I have the patience, I'll have to try it again & pay attention if to see when I'm braking.

This I think is true.
I also think that almost all the things the "aids" can do, you can also do to the car with tuning it in a certain way.
And that's why I don't see the aids as helping much, except in license tests - where you can't tune the cars at all. Because I'm always tuning my cars to suit me.
I just wish I knew more about which aids were the equivalent of what tuning, because then I'd be better at using the aids when they're allowed in things where I use an unmodified car!

So I think if you're good at tuning, turning off the aids is no great accomplishment. :D

I just tried driving with ABS off on the Toyota 7 and Chaparral 2J. It was a horrible experience! I'm gonna throw realism out the window for this one and always use ABS, even on classics.

ABS 1, TCS from 0-??? depending on the car (controller user.)

I still use manual & driving line... but wish I could quit them (like smoking.)

Even though I filter for "SRF off", I still find most online rooms use racing softs even with low PP/HP limits. :( That can be more of an aid than SRF...

I wish there was a "stock" online mode that would convert everyone's cars back to dealership conditions.

What's the point of driving aids in the first place?

Yes, in real life, traction control may stop you from verging into a river. But in GT5, if you DEPEND on electronic limitation to drive, then... learn to drive?

In my opinion, using aids that add grip or cut off the power takes most of the fun and challenge out of driving. The challenge of driving is one of the main reasons I bought GT5 in the first place!

+1

Not everyone bought GT5 for the same reasons.
There's many ways people enjoy various games, and many different reasons.

The beauty of GT5 is that it's diverse enough that me & my bf both wanted it, and enjoy it... but often in some very different ways!
I don't think either of us are right or wrong if we have different ideas & enjoy things differently... just a matter of taste.

Because you know, when it comes right down to it, you can't really compare GT5 to real life. In the game, there's no consequences. You're not going to die in a crash. That changes everything.

I'm just imagining a plot for a horror movie... Where some dastardly psycho villain takes video game racers hostage, and makes them match their best times, except that if in trying, they crash, he breaks their leg for real, or bonks them on the head. LOL :ouch: :sly: :D

I just don't have the precision to manage brakes or accelerator with my thumbs... don't think I ever will :( I try to stick to aids that exist in real life and then use them as little as possible, which is why I dislike SRF. I can do okay without the line on the tracks I know, but I've only got so much time to put into GT5...

If the game had NO aids whatsoever, I doubt it'd have the multi-million dollar budget it does to recreate all those cars and physics since the audience would be pretty small. On the other hand, with all aids + racing softs and cars like the X2010, I think that's just gone way too far and turns it into something more like Wipeout. I think there's a better middle ground that would make the more casual players like me happy and keep it feeling a bit more like a serious racing sim. They also needed more incentives in the game to encourage people to leave their training wheels behind.

I typically drive abs 1, i was wondering if having abs on or off even affects the braking in an X2010, being that the fan creates so much downforce

With grippiest tires + downfoce the ABS isn't really necessary as long as you adjust the brake balance. The treshold to lock up the tires is quite high with slicks. Even with sports tires driving with ABS off isn't that tricky if using wheel and pedals (remember to calibrate the brake pedal and adjust the balance). Driving style might need changing though... :)

Offline - TC 1 and ABS 1
Online - All off except ABS 1

Always running super soft aka racing soft tires.

Calibrate the brake pedal? Is that in the options area? I just typically put my brakes on 2 or 3 instead of 5
