I still think it's some what amazing that the retaining walls are able to retain vehicles out of control.

Much more amazing is the Mark Webber CLK-GTR flip at Le Mans. I'll try to find a video.

Apparently there was someone in the back of the Le Mans pits, on the phone to Montreal, where they found Adrian Newey (the McLaren aerodynamicist). They were so desperate to fix it that they were asking him for any solutions he could come up with. Mental.
 
Wasn't it the primary mercedes driver (name currently escapes me) who had the spectacular flip?
IIRC Webber had 3 lift-offs, but never a flip and the benz team put it down to driver error until the other guy got very airborne.
 
Peter Dumbreck was the guy's name.

Webber did indeed flip during practice.

There is a rumour that Mercedes destroyed all of their racing CLK-GTRs - possibly explaining why the cars have never been seen post '99 Le Mans - not that I think Mercedes would be in a hurry to revisit those memories...

There's been some speculation about an aerodynamic flaw in the GT1/prototype rules, particularly in the wake of Michele Alboreto's death at the wheel of a Le Mans Audi while testing in 2001 (was that really two and a half years ago?!?).

Yeah, what I found out, was that the GT1 rules of the day stated that the cars for some reason had to have flat bottoms :confused: . Hence when reaching speed and hitting bumps (in Mark Webbers case) and going over the crest on Mulsane for Peter Dumbreck, they took off. Air just got underneath the car. If you have a look at that upside down Mercedes in mid air, you'll see that the underneath of the car is completly flat (well virtually).

Edit:What track is that Porsche GT1 racing on. I don't recognise it. Also I don't ever remember hearing about the Porsche 911 GT1 flipping.

There's another 2 benzs out there, I thought they only entered 2 in total. Can you clear that up for me?

It's in the US. I think it's either Road America or Sebring, but I'm open to being corrected on the issue.

They intially entered three that year, but after all of Webbers flips they only entered two for the race. Dumbreks flip was in pre race warm-up, or have I got that the wrong way round :odd: ....

I seem to recall that one of the chassis was destroyed in qualifying. Both cars were pulled before the start after no resolution to the flipping was found.

Apparently it was subsequently found to be to do with the front splitter. Newey established the cause of the problem within half a day of actually getting one of the cars into a wind tunnel.

Indeed, I suspect the photo is of one of them being destroyed!

If I recall correctly, both Benzes started the race in high downforce wet weather aerodynamics trim in an attempt to overcome the problem.

This sequence occured during the morning warm on the Sunday.

There is a great piece that goes into the aerodynamic issues behind the flips here.
 
You're right Giles, the Porsche flipped at Road America.
