Earlier this year, I had a kid who tried to use one of the Call of Duty games - I think it was Black Ops - for an English assignment. He was very upset when he got the lowest mark in the class.

I was just about to ask what level of school you were in, but forgot your occupation said High School Teacher :O

And what was the assignment on?

They were supposed to find a text - a poem, song, film, etc. - that was in some way related to the novel they were reading in class (I can't actually remember what it was, because it was one chosen by the school and I was only doing part-time work). This kid decided that Black Ops was somehow related to it, but from reading his actual essay, it was pretty obvious that he was only interested in video games. While a video game is a text type, it has certain techniques to it (as all text types do). But we don't teach them, because they're not really an appropriate medium to be using.

What grinds my gears?

People that constantly rip on COD. Seriously, why do people hate it so much? Black Ops is the most fun game I've ever played. What do you hate it so much, the game or a SMALL portion of the people that play it?

I'm not ripping on it. I'm just saying that it's inappropriate to use it in a school assignment.

Why do people hate it? Because it's too simple. Cover-based shooting, regenerating health and clearly-marked objectives are all used to make a game that is easy to pick up and play and be successful in online modes. But there's simply no challenge in it, and it has dumbed down gaming - try the Half-Life games if you want to see how an actual shooter should be made. The entire single-player game modes in Call of Duty are designed to be an extended tutorial for online play, and the storytelling dies (although Black Ops worked because they had David S. Goyer writing it). And speaking of the online play, you open yourself to torrents of abuse if you dare to deviate away from the "right" way to play it.

I'm perfectly aware you're not ripping on it, and using it for a paper was a stupid idea on his part. And I agree that the story in Black Ops was pretty good. But to me it seems that modern-day warfare type FPSs are going to crap in general, the campaigns are all too short and the multiplayer is all rehashed. So to me it's just a matter of picking the lesser of two evils, you can buy the crap you know or crap you don't every November, and that's all there is to it.

But remember, when you take leveling up out of the equation, and you get the right people to play with, multiplayer is a blast.

Something that's griding my gears right now: sports commentators who have no idea what they're talking about. Anybody watching Channel Ten/One's coverage of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix knows exactly what I'm talking about. See also: bogan Jerry Bruckheimer production values. I don't know why, but they insist on dramatic music, dramatic slow-motion shots of the drivers, and dramatic voice-overs.

The fact that I seem to be unable to read on the Internet any place other than GTP.
Why does most of the Internet hate using grammar of any kind?

Black Ops is the most fun game I've ever played.

Then you need to play BF3. Or any game other than CoD pretty much. CoD is fun in small doses but so repetitive.

Winter grinds my gears. Snow's not here yet, but the impending threat forced me to swap out my summer tires for winter ones yesterday. Now my car looks horrible sitting on steelies! :grumpy:

I sense a set of hubcaps coming my way in the near future...

So you're being hypocritical while you're being hypocritical?

Yes

What grinds my gears is the guy who did the wiring for lights in our house. I've only managed to get my light working for the past 10 minutes of today! :grumpy:

Kick the lightswitch. Rinse and repeat until light works.

My gear grinder: Having to wait to get any new games...

My bedroom light will turn on, then off, and maybe again once or twice, and then stay off for a while. :(

The fact people seem to treat me like some kind of Antichrist when I say I'm not buying MW3.

I've got no problem with the people who play the game. Personally, I hate the repetitiveness. It's just run here, shoot these people over and over in the multilayer mode. Even in objective modes it's mostly run and fire with no need to take cover or have any strategy of any kind other than point and shoot. And I don't like that. I did in COD4, I did in WaW, and by the time I reached first prestige in MW2 it just felt stale, and Black Ops was a grind just for the sake of playing with friends. To me it's not worth the money since I could get the same experience on COD4. Although I did love Spec Ops in MW2 and will probably rent it to play through it in MW3 with a friend before sending it back.

Again, no problem with the people who play the game, if you enjoy the online mode, more power to you. Not saying it's bad, just that it's not for me. And the evil looks and shocked expressions I get from people for not wanting the game is starting to piss me off.

See, I have no problem with people who are like this. 👍 I do have a problem with people who rip on the COD series in general. (Which you're not doing)

The front end of the Ferrari 458. The rest of the car is gorgeous, but the front opening and headlights ruin it, in my opinion.

That's the Ferrari FF for me. I love the rest of it but the front end makes it look like an angry clown on LSD at the right angle.

I don't like it much either, but if you go to the Ferrari website and configure one, you will find that the grille can also be had in black (as opposed to shiny metal). I think that this makes it look much better.

I actually did a while back and it does look a lot better, but still not good enough for me to call it beautiful.

People that can't deal with losing. I joined a room for RM, TC, LM, and SuperGT with my RM ZR1. I won the first race at Fuji, so the host got mad and saod next time you wont win. Next was Cote d'Azur, he had am oreca Viper GTS. I was winning, so in the middle of the race I was kicked.

I am not getting MW3

I usually rent CoD when it comes out, then buy it for my birthday. ANymore, I don't think I'll be doing that. MW3 is just the same as all the others since Modern Warfare. Now I just rent it to play the story (Which I love) and never see it again. Now I mostly play Halo, Battlefield, and Forza, because those are the games I enjoy.

What's Grinding My Gears? My friend. Every time someone corrects him, he just says, "Who cares!" It's the most annoying thing ever. Today we were playing Forza.

Friend-"How about we drive Indy Cars on Daytona?"
Me-"It's Indy raceway, plus there are no Indy Cars, just NASCARS."
Friend-"Uhh, same thing!"
Me-"Actually, no, It's not the same thing."
Friend-"Oh my God, who cares?"
Me-"Most educated people care, obviously your not one of them."

Plus now he gets all jelly if I'm with other friends, it's so annoying!

I am not getting MW3

So am I, because exactly what MintBerry said. I don't mind playing it for a couple of hours but MW3 is basic repetitiveness.

And what is grinding my gears today is the AI on GT2. I mean it's like if they think you're not even there! Like on Rome, I try to brake into one of the hard corners while adapting to the button layout, and the drivers behind just barged onto my rear bumper like it was a super-sized cookie and launched me into the wall, pushing me back last. It was easy to gain back my position as I was driving a Lancer but it's quite a journey to try to avoid this ridiculous predicament. It's no-problem on high speed corners but it's pure madness in nineties, hairpins, tight sections, and corners similar to those characteristics.

I might go ahead and return my copy. I finished the campaign the day I bought it (it wasn't bad, but there were quite a few boring moment where I felt it was getting rather repetitive), plus I'm not finding anywhere near as much enjoyment when playing online as I did with WaW, or MW2 for that matter. I'll probably replace it with Forza 4 next week when possible.

Anyway, the guy who drives around town beeping his horrible sounding horn and shouting "scrap iron!" has been grinding my gears for the past year or so. If people wanted to get rid of old or broken metal products, then why can't they have a service where you can just call the guy, and organise a time for him to pick up any scrap metal you might have. It would be better than having him driving his van around town twice a day while hollering like a bloody mad man.

MW3 is not a bad game, but its repetitive. Battlefield 3 is a Good Multiplayer because you do rely on team work ( Covering a certain area to either capture/defuse/arm/defend), I have certain team members that do talk in a game or so. The Sniping is fun without quick scoping and the sort ( Plus you get assortment of scopes like RDS, Holo, x4, x7,x8,x12) ( or attachments; Bipods, Straight Bolt-action,IR, Tact light, Laser, and silencer). This year, I have been sticking with the fighting Genre because it really doesn't require DLC and you can probably find people in your local area that plays (Probably not like you do but they play).

Can someone explain how someone (who knew they had to swipe their interact card on the debit machine) suddenly forgot that they had to (and even how to) swipe their card on the 2nd purchase they made 30 minutes after the first?
