$30 is just 1% of his budget. There is no point in arguing and if he is spending that much then why not?

I don't think it is an argument or a form of: "My opinion is right and you must abide by it!"

I think it is more about people actually caring about the value that he is getting out of his proposed build and wanting to understand why he would want to plump for the higher cost of the processor rather than settling for the (slightly) cheaper processor at a small incremental increase of stock speed.

The total amount that it has come to (3k) makes the $30 extra for the processor totally meaningless. However, if a person was on a budget of 500 to a grand, then yes, that could be argued to have more value in comparison to the person buying it.

My personal opinion is that it isn't really an issue whether he gets the higher or the lower processor but considering he is doing a lot of video encoding, it would be wise to get the best processor for the money that you can get, reasonably priced in his budget. So I would agree with his selection of his components and he feels that he would be getting the most out of it, as he is actually buying it for himself, not for anyone else.

Everyone has their own individual goals to their own computer budgets and components and they don't have to always let it be known why they have chosen the components that they have, in great detail.

Their are a lot more questionable items on that list than a $30 CPU difference....

So today I finally got my shipment in on my EVGA GTX460 Superclocked, and 4gb DDR2 Corsairs XMS2TWIN 800's.

My old setup:
Intel Core 2 Quad
Asus P5b Deluxe motherboard
Asus 8800 series video card
2 GB ddr2
750W PS

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Here is what I got:

The old ram:

Heres a better view of my old setup:

Current comparison between the video cards and ram:

One thing I did notice was the videos cards weighed about the same and have almost the same dimensions, nothing really different. Fan placement on the new EVGA card is in the middle and much bigger. Exhaust/Cooling ports have changed. My old ASUS video card took one 6port connector, while the new EVGA card takes 2 6port connectors. If you notice my NIC blocks the lower portion of the fan, but who cares :). In addition, the new Corsair ram seemed very sturdy and heavy, it gave me a positive feeling about it for some reason.

Ram is installed:

Here is the new complete setup with the addition of the new video card:

Everything booted up, Windows went back to integrated graphics, installed drivers, no problems whatsoever:

PS dont forget to do this before handling your installation:

And now it runs!!! Finally ready for guild wars 2, and whatever else comes its way!

Overall, im happy with the purchase total came out to $200 from amazon. Lifetime warranty. Cant beat it. :). Ram now indicates 4gb installed with 3 usable, before it was only 2gb. Stay tuned next year for an entire computer upgrade! Big shout outs to tlowr4,nick09,and bergauk for helping me make my decision on the upgrade.

Kinda stuck on my setup. I've watched this video, followed the instructions (everything hooked up) and one part I'm stuck on is the portion regarding turning on the PS3. Now earlier in the setup, I'm supposed to have all other audio or video cables unplugged (including the HDMI cable). Question is though, how am I supposed to see it in order to change the settings?

Holding down the power button on the ps3 when turning on is supposed to reset the display settings. Sounds like that isn't happening in your case.

Just found out what it was. Turns out I did everything right EXCEPT match all the cords on the TV *facepalm*. Once I match the blue to the blue and the green to the green, it showed right up.

You still haven't given us a reason why you would spend $30 more just for a 100 mhz stock increase.

Not wanting to overclock this new rig even though my old PC was overclocked allround by 20% for 3 years and it gave better performance it shortened the life, and this is my planned build so changes may be made down the road.

I have found that I can also get the mamba mouse $40 cheaper at work.

For some people value for money isn't the issue when building a rig (like me).
If i would have considered this, i wouldn't have bought more then 3/4 of my rig.
Tonight i'll finally install the SSD and Windows.

Well seeing as it is a K CPU which is meant to be overclocked, I will be getting the 2600K but the 3770K was also on the list and save the small amount and put it toward a new BD drive, but I still won't overclock for a while.

Joined my school's VEX Robotics club. We have a competition in November to create and program a robot that does this challenge:

Finished with the SSD and Windows.
I can just tell everyone, who is still thinking about changing, "DO IT!"
It's just amazing, because it feels like losing the handbrake on the system.
I had already the very fast 10.000 RPM WD Velociraptor in RAID 0 as system disc, but SSD is a whole new world.
And btw got me a windows performance index of 7.6, a little tweaking and it's maxed :D

Nice! I started with one SSD, and now I have 3 installed in the system. I love my SSD's and look forward to building a system around them from the ground up next time around!

It's really great and performance wise i'm more then happy.
The first time in almost a year i can say that my PC is finished at least from the hardware side.
I'm sure it will not last long, because there are already a few small plans, but the main components will stay now.
Just waiting for my new camera to take some nice shots ;)

@Racecar, Hauppauge is a great brand, i had a tuner card few years ago and it worked perfect from the box.

Fiddled around with my laptop and attempted to load Chromium onto it. It worked, but only off the flash drive it was on. If I tried to install it, it wouldn't let me. Also I've determined that while you can do almost everything on a computer without a mouse, having a functioning, non-half-broken/glitched out trackpad helps out a lot.

Overall, I like the way Chromium feels, it's simple and I'm already used to it after spending so much time browsing on Google Chrome. I hope that one day I can get a Chromebook though, cause that would be really fun to use in my opinion. It's just stupidly simple, and I like it that way.

How much more would the 3770K be? Surely it makes sense to get that over the older generation processors as it is faster while taking less power and not costing much more? i would recommend also to change the Arctic Silver 5 for something like Arctic Cooling MX-4. Main advantage is no capacitive problems and also no cure time as well as potentially better cooling performance for the same cost. Finally you should be able to find lower voltage and faster ram if you look around.

It turns out that with the newer generation Intel chips, they have some strange heat related issues as they are made with concave or convex covers so the TIM and the heatsinks sometimes doesn't make a good seal/connection.

Mind giving us a link to that article? I've read that it only happens when you are overclocking.

Edit: I did something with my computer today. To quote my facebook because I'm lazy:
Installed a card reader for my computer and sadly there are huge gaps around it! Sigh... Couldn't find the adapter piece that came with my case so I'm gonna have to contact the manufacturer of my case so I can get the shield piece in my computer tower! Should of paid better attention to where my boxes are!

So yes, I will have to get myself a replacement part for my fractal case. These things are too easy to lose!:grumpy:

After having random blue screens ever since I got a new gpu (a few pages back) and trying to figure out if it was a bad card or bad drivers etc. I decided to swap my hyper 630w psi with Vics ocz 650w and hurrah! Issue solved. :)

Messed with my laptop even more today.. I got it to install Chromium, but I had to disable the touchpad.. No big deal, I just put a usb mouse in afterwards and it seems to work fine.[I think the issue with a mouse not working beforehand is that it registered the touchpad before the external and that caused it to register a left click at random that would cause the whole thing to bug out, disconnecting it from the board altogether seems to have fixed the issue.] The only issue I'm seeing now is a few drivers aren't working(Yes I know Chromium was really only designed for the notebooks it runs on), or don't exist yet. I contacted the guy who compiles these things and asked about it and I'm waiting for a reply now.

Got an email back from the North America Fractal Design Support team just an hour ago. Gave him my details and they will be sending me the part within a week. Good service so far and my 3.5" Vantec card reader will have to sit there like as if it's being supported by nothing! Another plus in my book for Fractal.

Wow, nice work. Really a sweet lookin' rig there. One thing though, are you gonna hit that with some compressed air or something? And possibly tidy those cables up a tad? I've seen some dirty systems, and yours is up there (no offence)! Even so, great work.

Oh. You've never seen damp wood dust or 100% spider web dirty.
