Have you thought of rigging the case so you can use the water cooler?

I looked at that cooler master and I think it might work but I have noticed that the heatsink goes pass the mounting pin in width.

You could have a company cut a nice fan vent in the rear. It would make the case look as if the fan was already there.

Attempted to turn up the boost on my 5770s. Note use of "attempted".

Used Overdrive's auto-tune, according to that 950/1435 was stable - so I tried those clocks, and nothing worked. Race 07 wouldn't even start (Steam threw some random error), Borderlands would lock up the system at the pre-roll tech credits.

Tried 950/1400. No dice.

950/1300? Success... for about five minutes, when my test at T-Bone Junction in Borderlands (the one part of the game that doesn't manage to run at a v-sync 60) blew up in my face. I had noticed a good 5-10fps gain (low 30s rose to around 40) up until then.

Ended up sticking with the stock 850/1200 clocks :grumpy:

Today I went back to trying Firefox....I missed all the extensions that Chrome just doesn't offer.

I went away from it because it was becoming a RAM hog, but now, with 12gb, what do I care??

Talking about overclocking a graphics card...I have two monitor screens and attempted to overclock my graphics card that output to both screens, but on separate connectors. The graphics card in question is an MSI R4850 1GB (basically a AMD/ATI 4850) that is for overclocking. Used the "Overdrive" software to auto tune the graphics card for one monitor which it did give me a number (forgot which). Tested it. It worked.

Then tried to play games on it. It didn't work, or display anything. So I am assuming you can't really overclock a graphics card on two screens....Although you saying that it didn't really work particularly well in your case, I may have to try it with just one....and see what happens.

Maybe you need better cooling in the case?

While heat may be an eventual problem, the fact that everything crashes before the game even starts seems to indicate general instability with the given clock speed. I did a quick search for the 5770 and found that the GPU is already near its maximum potential.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-5770-overclocking,2473-3.html

They could only push the GPU to 895, but the memory was able to get up to 1430. Maybe give that a shot Sharky.

Also.. @Submerged - that seems to be a common problem with the 4850 from what I see, but I haven't read anywhere that gives a definitive answer on whether or not you can do anything about it.

After reading your post dchPSUone, I decided to have a quick Google around to see.

Yes, it seems no-one really knows the answer so far. Most have stated to stick with just the one monitor. Nothing major or anything. Although it did highlight something interesting for me that has been happening quite often for me. An overclocking user in a different forum complained of having a full screen application making the whole screen go blank for a set time before showing everything as it should be. This was up to 30 seconds, supposely.

The only way to make it display things properly was to go roll back the driver to before 11.1(a) from ATI. Which is a bit surprising to find, considering we're all now up to 11.3....

I might try that. May make the second screen stop flickering whenever Youtube is starting to play a video or a forum plays a video....

I just had a brainwave - is it possible that when I raise the clocks on both GPUs, the cards end up drawing too much power under load for my PSU? My PSU is rated at 600w; according to this 5770s in crossfire draw 324w under load, my CPU takes 56w so that's 380w and estimating 100w max for the rest of the system puts the total power alarmingly close to what I'd expect from my PSU (600w, assume 80% efficiency -> ~500w).

I'll see what happens if I fiddle with the clocks with Crossfire disabled.

@ Sharky, That could be an issue too but I'd assume most of the time they wouldnt be running at full load especially at the startup of a game so I'm not sure how much more power they would really be using, but did you see my post above?

From the sites I looked at they weren't able to get the card stable with the GPU clock above 895 and the memory at 1430. I think the fact that you got borderlands to work for a few minutes shows that its just an unstable clock. I'd really give these numbers a try. It seems that the autotune in overdrive takes things a little further than some of the cards are actually capable of.

I've heard of people getting the cards to 1000/1500 and stable, so I'm not sure why 950/1435 wouldn't work :odd:

edit: 895/1430 had the same result as 950/1435, ie my test game of Borderlands locked up at the tech credits. I think the memory clock is what's causing issues.

It could be down to the cooling solution. I would replace the thermal paste to see if you could get a slight overclock.

Normally when overclocking gpu's, if it simply crashes it's usually the gpu clock is too high; if you start getting jagged tears onscreen, it's the memory clocks.

Try using ATItool or some aftermarket overclocking tool, it will have a built in test for your overclocks that is much better than the one that comes with the ATI drivers.

Found a solution to the DS I fried. If I can fix my old one, I'd have 2 DS's, except one has to be kept for top-secret use-only

You could always try overclocking them separately. First find out the max with just the memory and then the GPU, or the other way around.

I'll just post this here as I don't want to make a thread.

I recently bought a PC and it's great, however it lacks a graphics card. Problem is that it's a fairly narrow tower and the little slots that open up are only about 2" long. Are there any graphics cards that will fit or am I screwed in the graphics dept.?

Sharky, every card is different. You probably got a bad one or two unfortunately :(.

Anyway, haven't done anything to my computer too recently. I do want to perhaps replace my motherboard (Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H) in the near future, as the PCI-e 16x slot blew, so I think I can only use it in 8x mode (which requires dual GPU) from tests I did when it went. I also get random full system hangs, mostly when browsing the internet. Not sure if I want to go through the hassle of returning the thing and being PC less for a while just to fix the problem. It would also require me to spend a bunch of time rebuilding the thing and getting a new key for my OEM copy of Win 7. Should I do it, or just leave it? For me the cons outweigh the pros, but if anyone else has had a similar experience and it got much worse later down the track, I may save myself the hassle and replace it now.

Nah, I doubt that, they're identical in model and the only difference is manufacture date - plus they work fine stock  Anyway, instead of fiddling in Catalyst I set the clocks at 940/1300 using MSI Afterburner and voila! Stable as a rock. Why changing the clocks in Overdrive was making the cards freeze when setting them in Afterburner worked is beyond me :odd:

Updated my graphics driver (the one I was using is a year old!) but now my screen flickers when I scroll up or down... My graphics card is an ATi Radeon HD 2400 Pro, using IE8.

EDIT: Going to try updating to Internet Explorer 9...

EDIT2:Updated a load of things and fixed flicker, updating to IE9 anyway...

Hehe AOS your DS adventure made me think of this old Penny Arcade comic

If I had found out about this dead easy fix sooner, I wouldn't have went out to buy a new DS.... The Plus side to having a 2nd DS is now I can use it to play anything but Taiko no Tatsujin.
