I changed my start orb.

Changed the black ink in the printer today. Now to just wait for the color ink to die out and change that in the future.

@the_stig_1: I got the Windows 98 look on my Windows 7 computers. Any windows computer I own has to look like windows 98. I just can't take a taskbar that uses so much screen space. It has to be thin and out of the way when I'm doing something. Plus it is old nostalgia to have it look beige like windows 2000 too.

Speaking of overclocking, what do you do when you push it too far and you et a no post or BSOD?

This doesn't deserve it's own thread so I thought I'd chuck it here :P

I just revert back to my previous settings, I can get 3.6GHz out of mine but if I push that 0.1GHz more it'll just have a bitch fit and start raving with BSOD's

Transferred all my files off my portable hard drive onto my main hard drive as a precautionary measure as the mini-USB port's been bent out of place. Also put a rubber band around it to hold a cable in place for the transfers. Picking up a new 2TB external drive tomorrow.

Also bought and installed Worms: Reloaded GOTY off Steam.

This is kinda PC related. I'm making a device to extend my work area to my bed since I have limited work space and I can't really work outside of my bedroom. Plan is to glue some cotton fabric on them and then use aluminum tubes to secure them together and leave no gaps. My father cut them into 10"x40" and I used the metal file to sand the edges. It will be used as extra work space when I need to open a computer up and save scratching up my rather beautiful computer desk. This is the work done so far:

I'm using an spray adhesive called 3m super 77 spray adhesive. Anyone got hints and pointers on how to use the glue? It's a tricky glue. If I press too hard it will just spray too much and ruin the fabric. The fabric is a heavy cotton.

^ Lookin' good nick :)

Well while I'm here, I've been getting into Folding@Home. I'm on a noob system (Lindsays old rig, C2D @ 1.8GHz, 2GB RAM, Onboard graphics etc) but I'm slowly going to upgrade it. First thing to do is get a new board since this stock HP one is buggy as all buggery. Sometimes it will boot, sometimes it won't. It's RAM and DIMM problems, and I'd say it'd need a BIOS flash to fix it, but I'm not about to go doing it since the board is unstable as it is. I'm just gonna use it till I can pick up a cheap 775 board.

Then I'm gonna look into a graphics card. Proberbly just a 9800GT or such, they're good starter folding cards. After that it would be powersupply upgrade, case, CPU, and then later in the year I'm hoping to move to 1155 and an i5 2400. Get some serious CPU folding going, and move up to something like a cheap GTX560, which are great folders.

:) Ramble, I know, but most of it was just typed as it came to mind and as I remembered what I'd thought of.

I have heard that term and while I kinda knew what it was about I was too lazy to use what little computer power I had for it.

Now with a $3000 gaming rig I have the power and most of the time(like now) it idles doing nothing.

So my specs

i5 3570k @ 4.2Ghz boost clock
and
GTX 680 1.2Ghz Boost clock should be used for something.

But for now it is using my CPU even though I have a GPU as well as a CPU folding task running, but my GPU is not even going past 3% load.

It doesn't like my GTX680.

@GrayFox More than likely not. Since the 680s are new cards, untill they update the program, it will be poorly coded for your card.

Give em about another month or 2 (they're only a small team) and it'll be all good. Then you can unleash hell on 'em. Most people are running 560Tis and 570s for folding (the best price to performance oriented ones for folding), so your 680 will just destroy nature.

You'll probably be seeing around the 25'000PPD mark

Well I have removed the GPU tasks until they update the program, but it tried to use the GPU my GPU was running at 1,058Mhz while having a 1% load.

As soon as I removed the GPU folding task my GPU clock dropped to 324Mhz.

Ordered a Microserver.

Cause I didn't have one.

Now it's arrived :). Also picked up.

1 x 3TB WD Green
1 x GT210 Passive
and a 3m length of Cat6 cause I'm too lazy to find my roll and do it myself.

Uninstalled Windows 8 as it's quite possibly the most dangerous & annoying OS ever to grace the computing kingdom.

Fatal hardware errors left, right & centre yet my PC is in an idle state on the desktop.

Fatal hardware errors when I'm simply trying to watch videos on YouTube.

Fatal hardware errors when I'm listening to music on Winamp.

Fatal hardware errors when I spend majority of the night working.

Fatal hardware errors which don't seem to have a fix at all.

Fatal hardware errors Microsoft knows it's OS is causing yet does nothing about it apart from say update your graphics card drivers which does nothing.

Sick to death of seeing Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA Uncorrectable Error)

I mean how many people & how many reports does it take for Microsoft to realise they have a major issue with an up & coming OS of theirs?.

I don't mind testing things for Microsoft but when it's causing damage to my hardware that's when the testing stops.

I hope Windows 8 is a major failure, Infact I know it's going to be a major failure, It's like a giant smartphone menu but on your PC, doesn't work, won't work & won't be liked.

Rant over & hello Linux Mint.

There is supposed to be some way to change the theme in windows 8 from crap to the windows 7 theme. Good call on mint btw.

Sounds like your computer wasn't meant to run Windows 8 in the first place.. I've been running it since the Dev Preview came out. No issues on my end, even when I leave it on all night. Sad to see that you didn't have the experience that I've been happened.

I'm running it as a parallel on my MacBook Pro for a few days now and I must say I've been impressed with Windows 8, I really like the Metro UI. Works wonderfully and is a nice improvement in the usability area for Windows in my view.

I also really like the Metro UI, I know its not to everyone's taste but I do like the idea of a mobile phone style interface for casual stuff on a PC and its one of the best looking ones out there. Just wish they hadn't made the crazy decision to remove Aero glass from the normal desktop, that was a major step backwards.

I found it a pitty chrome didn't open in the Metro side of windows 8 but on the desktop side. I guess that will be changed in the final version seeing as chrome has just been released as an app for iOS.

I don't really miss the Aero glass feature. But then again I haven't used windows 7 much due to preferring Lion.

I also like the snap bars you can have so say email or IE open with a twitter feed neatly down the side.

Something has died badly since I last posted in this thread.

Was browsing the web last night when all power suddenly went, my PC went off and automatically booted itself just a second after it had gone off but without display from my monitor, which leads me to think it's an electrical fault with some form of hardware.

My PC turns on fine but there isn't any display, I think it might be the graphics card what is broke after a power cut last week followed by another just milliseconds after power was restored, going along the lines that a power surge has done something with the GPU, either that or the PCI-E slots on my motherboard are shot, or finally it could be the motherboard itself as it doesn't even give power to my mouse & keyboard on boot-up (LED keyboard & mouse usually blink once they receive power) either way I'm one 🤬 off 🤬 right now.

I've also read that my OS could be operating in hibernation mode hence why the monitor won't display anything on boot but I'm pretty skeptical about that.

Going to use my dads graphics card in my system with my monitor to eliminate either my GPU, monitor or motherboard.

I'm hoping it's just the GPU what has died & not the motherboard as I see DDR2 has been phased out with the current selection of motherboards at my local computer shop, could be a costly rebuild all because of a 🤬 power surge.

I've placed my GPU in the 4 PCI-E slots available to me and I end up with the same result, I've also pressed the reset button on my motherboard to no avail & I've taken pretty much every slot, pin & every other form of electric out & back in just to be sure nothing is loose.

All in all, what haven't I done today computer wise? 🤬 tearing my hair out, or whats left of it .
