What Have You Done Today - (Computer Version)

Do a memory test if you can, there might be some problem with your RAM.

Memtest86 is one of the better ones out there and it's free, but the site does give you the option of forking over ten bucks for a pre-burnt CD. Be aware that just like every other thorough memory test, it takes a long time to run. Figure on overnight, at least.

Today? I have torn down three separate systems. Drained one system. Link tested and fitted. Made an entire mess out of my basement, and have gone through 10 gallons of water.

Working on getting 2 systems working by the days end.

I'd say it's been a good day of computer plumbing. :)

System 1: i7 965 EE, 1866 Corsair Dominator 8GB, SSD, GTS 250, etc.
System 2: i7 3770K, 2400 Kingston Hyper X 8GB, SSD, dual 590's, etc.
System 3: Core 2 Q9550 Core 755, 4gb generic ram, standard everything.

Erm... So earlier on I went to get some dinner and left my PC running as I always do. I came back about an hour and a half later to a blank screen. Nothing was responding so I did a hard reboot and now I have a message saying "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key".

Help please!

Edit: only one of the SATA devices was being picked up so I removed them all except for one, which I think is my SSD boot drive, now it says 'BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart'. I just did that and it's showing me the same thing.

Edit again: Phew! Problem solved. When I installed my new 2TB drive a while back I kind of just stuck it in there, it seems that was a bad idea because it was exerting pressure on the SSD's SATA connector and caused it to ping out, I opened it up, arranged the drives properly this time and plugged it all back in and it's working again.

Aaaaand... Relax.

Edit again again: Ok, so that wasn't the problem, the cable must've been knocked out when I opened the PC. I was just playing Borderlands 2, went to quit the game and it crashed. I attempted to open the task manager to quit but the screen just went black when I pressed ctrl-alt-del, the music still playing in the background, and everything stopped responding, again. Hard reset, BOOTMGR is missing. SSD must be dying, I've only had it for 11 months. That's annoying. I guess I'll see if I can get it running again, copy as much as I can onto my 2TB drive and see what happens after that.

Today I assembled the front end of the system. Pics in my build thread. I also cloned my 80GB SSD SataII for a 240GB SSD SataIII for my system drive.

I had the chance to use some new software from Acronis call True Image 2013. Worked great, so much so that I will be using it at work on Monday for another HD swap.

I feel much better after getting things put together. It has been a long haul it feels like.

I got Windows 8, and I love it!

I'm looking forward to the day I can afford it. I'm running Consumer Preview right now(The upgrade to Release Preview said it was going to wipe my HDD so I didn't bother with it), and I love it too. My laptop used to take about 5 minutes to boot before, but with 8 it takes about a minute or so. And that's with a C2D @2.00GHz and an old SATAII 320GB HDD.

One question for you though, does it run Minecraft? My laptop USED to run it, but it seems there is a Java issue with the beta for Windows 8, and I was wondering if that had been rectified by now.

I'll probably get it this week. Was sold when I saw you're able to make this.

I'm thinking of getting it because of the low price but it just seems too mouse oriented, and I'm more of a keyboard guy.

[sarcasm]WMC for the file system. Oh joy![/sarcasm]

Certainly not a fan. Until I see some performance benefits, I think I'll stay away from any new M$ bloat.

In other news, I just got my smart strip from newegg. Now when I power on my Computer, my cooling system including my pump and fan turn on with it. Very cool! Kept me from having to make my own relay switch.

Besides the fact it's more secure, uses less memory, faster, and more reliable?

No performance benefits at all....

Unless you like sub 10 second boot up times.

Early benches did not support what you are saying, but final releases can mature with proper driver support. We'll see.

Does it run Minecraft? - I haven't checked, I uninstalled Minecraft as I got motion sickness from it.

Benefits - Faster, Easy Multitasking, Start Menu makes checking everyday info one click away, looks MUCH nicer, no sacrifices from Windows 7, Apps and app store (BIG advantage)

Cons - Can be intimidating at first, feels like a phone at times instead of a PC, the taskbar at the left can be hard to use/annoying when switching apps

Early benches from consumer preview? As in Windows 7 running a Windows 8 skin?

I know what I am saying is true because I have been running it.

Settings that power users or enthusiasts are used to are hidden deep down in the OS now; I had to Google how to turn off the log in lock screen ffs lol.

Also, since that one guy didn't respond here is custom tile/shortcut info:

What did I do today?

I took out the memory, and then put it back in about ten minutes later.
Then spent an hour trying to put all the cables back in the right spot.

Double post pal.

I know it was probably a problem with your PC. Just couldn't resist.

Interesting read and certainly looks good on paper. Once full driver support is available, I'll give it a shot myself.

In looking at some of the 7 vs. 8 comparisons of the actual release, performance is negligible with the exception being drivers not being fully supported yet.

Like most of the OS releases, driver support will be come in time.

Can't get more than 3 titles vertically; I think CCC is writing to reg on start up so it overrides anything I do. So much wasted real estate!

I told you, inefficient and bloated!

Just kidding, but I had to take a poke at ya.

All fun and games until someone gets a bsod.

I have side-graded yet again this generation; can't quite decide what I want to do evidently. However, I definitely needed the extra VRAM.

Selling my 7870's (sold one, about to throw the other on eBay); picked up a 7950 with the never settle bundle (three free games, thank you). Told the wife just to pick up the other one for Christmas, so will be crossfired at Christmas (with another three free games, which will go on eBay lol).
