My laptop's hard drive got crushed a couple weeks ago, so today I bought a new 120 GB solid state hard drive at Best Buy. Needless to say, that thing is damn fast. I feel like I have a whole new computer.

Installed Windows 8 with the update offer on my Laptop.
Still undecided what to think about it :/
But Smartglass with Forza Horizon is fun.

All the pictures of Windows 8 is SERIOUSLY :censored:ing with my mind... I need a painkiller.

You treacherous bastards.

Why not install some Linux flavour that's so obscure very few people know how to run it?

Then you'll be living on the edge. :)

Hehehe

Why not install windows 3.11 and call the Microsoft hotline for driver support, that's living on the edge

But seriously, Windows 8 is surprisingly fast, even on my old laptop and after getting used to it, really fun to work with.

I swapped out my compaq's crappy amd v-series single core for a phenom quad then put in 6 gb ram.

Runs shogun 2 on Medium! Woo!

I'm enjoying it so far, but also using Start8 so it's more friendly for the missus.

I will say though might be fine for a laptop (as you can use gestures) but it'd pretty pretty jarring on a Single Display desktop in my usage so far.

It's definitely snappier than Windows 7 if you're worried about performance.

I also got another 2TB HDD cause I have too much crap.

Currently in the process of moving everything around but should be much more organised and easier to manage when I have.

👍 Your drive display looks oddly familiar. I even have a drive labeled SSD2. :D

Glad to hear the W8 reports so far. That is encouraging.

Definitely easier when it comes to backup. As I'll just backup the entire C/E drive weekly (OS\Programs\Files) and not worry about backing up games (which are either steam or I have physical media for).

Alright. Had some issues with my OS and needed to reinstall my Win7 install. Got home and what did I have in my hand? W8 64-bit Pro.

So yes, apparently I like BBQ with my crow. So far I am really enjoying it. It even fixed some of my driver issues I had with W7. Fast, responsive, new, and slightly confusing... :)

Good times with some initial learning to move around the file system.

I installed start8, makes the learning curve less steep and more missus friendly.

Entered buying phase for my new PC - planning is done and parts have been chosen.
Also, tried to test Win8 but my current CPU can't do virtual machines for some reason.

Today I:

- Added some MDF to my cockpit and adjusted my monitors, it looks rather lovely now (in a functional way, it's still technically ugly as sin).

- Fixed my SSD (128GB Crucial M4), turns out there was a glitch in the firmware which kicked in at 5,000 hours. Extremely happy with that one!

- Started fixing my old Apple Magic Mouse. It was having power issues and I've discovered it's down to a broken moulding which would have been holding one of the battery contacts in place, without it the battery barely makes contact and therefore the slightest knock disconnects it. Now I just have to work out how to re-insert the trackpad's ZIF connector, there's absolutely no room and it's probably the least 'zero insertion force' connector I've ever seen in my life...

Man, I have to say.... I have been loving the weekend with Windows 8. It has been rock solid and actually solved some previous pesky driver issues I had before. So far, I am really impressed!

Hey guys I wonder if you could answer my question about windows 8.
For some reason I really wanna buy it, but I dont have a touch screen. Is it really better than windows 7 when just using a mouse and keyboard? I can imagine it being a but hard to navigate. Also, when installing stuff like Java and drivers etc, do you just click on windows 7 as your operating system?

Complete Windows 8 noob here, but here are my initial thoughts....

I have three monitors and am using mouse and keyboard only. I can see the advantages of touch screen but navigation is fine. Using some of the quick keyboard commands will aid in navigation, but nothing is inaccessible.

So far, all the drivers I have installed have been specific to Windows 8. I have installed software that has been 32-bit and 64-bit. Some has been specifically noted as Windows 8 software while other titles have been listed as Windows software. Comparability seems pretty good here in my experience.

Got a new i7 Mac mini and already lined up a buyer for my 2009 model. Popped in a 16GB RAM upgrade and a 256GB Samsung 830. I've linked my home folder to an external 1TB drive via FW800. Short term I've got a USB 3.0/eSATA adapter coming, so that may speed things up a bit. Longer term I may take my 1TB clone drive and put both drives into a USB 3.0 RAID1 enclosure.

I also did some Borderlands 2 .ini tweaking on the gaming PC. I'm one of three remaining people who has an X-fi installed (Titanium HD) and was getting increasingly frustrated by the poor audio quality of Borderlands 2 relative to Borderlands 1. Turns out that BL2 doesn't use FMOD for the audio engine and is configured to use generic software audio and only 32 voices! My X-fi wasn't being utilized at all. A few tweaks later, and BL2 is set to 128 voices and uses my X-fi for OpenAL calls. It sounds sooo much nicer and CMSS-3D works again, which I find incredibly important in a game like Borderlands 2.

After spending the whole day with switching the rooms, I decided to connect my extra monitor as well.
Nice to have a clean desktop and all shortcuts on the other screen :D

Installed Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection. 19GB's of pure, unadulterated confusion. :D

Lol what haven't I done today. Computer blew up maybe a week ago. Tried everything but motherboard seems to be gone. Got another old computer to take its place which has vista on it. Reformatted the whole thing to while clean and start fresh. Only installed chrome. Got my old computer hard drive out and got the special cables to convert it to work with regular USB. Luckily it still works and was able to move all my old stuff to this other computer. Took so long doing updates since they make it so stupid by forcing you to do all the old updates first than installing the newer versions. It doesn't do this in a row either you have to say each time to do more updates. So annoying but seems all fixed now.

Ouch! Full system failure and recovery is never fun to deal with and it rarely happens when you have time and have nothing else to do.

For hard drive failures, keeping a image safely tucked away can help in getting things up and running again quickly, but if major hardware fails that needs replaced, system images sometimes don't work.

Been through it and feel your pain! :)
