What kind of headphones do you have? I got my XB 1000's

Update!

My MDR XB-1000 headphones came in earlier today... and im not gonna lie, pretty impressive. When other people compare these to the XB 500 and 700 and say the bass isnt as in your face, im sure what they are perceiving as loudness of bass, is actually the bass distorting. These headphones are not distorting the least. The bass is plenty powerful, especially at higher volumes, it actually feels like the headphones are shaking. Im used to my cars stereo system, 1600watts to two 12" subs that can hit about 142-144db (used a mini boom stick from work to measure) and i do not think these headphones lack any bass.

The highs and mids are not distorting either, and the headphones themselves are very comfortable. The cups are huge, very huge... what do you expect when you have a 70mm diaphragm. This might bother other people, but they leak sound, mostly because of the big port. Sound leakage doesn't bother me, now the people around me maybe  . Noise from the outside doesn't leak in much though, my environment is a college campus so there is times when it is loud, these block those noises.

I dont think these would need an amp, my 7th gen ipod classic does the job just fine for me. They have 24ohm resistance and if you were to use an amp for these, make sure it is compatible down to that level. But imo i dont think they need it. Just EQ it up and they shine.

I recommend any of the XB series from 500 and up, its just the price makes a couple jumps along the way and some people may have trouble justifying paying that amount for these types of products. But that's the price of being an audiophile.

Congrats on your purchase. Have you had any long sessions with them yet? Any head or ear fatigue? Need a pic with you wearing them man, I have to see them on, they just look huge (and comfortable) from all the pics I've seen.

You also mentioned,

What EQ adjustments are you making?

Yeah i have, i had them on for 3 hours straight while i was on RA duty and when i took them off i felt like i was missing something  . The ear pads are super soft and mushy, think of a soft leather sofa. The headphones are huge indeed, the pictures online don't do them enough justice, and in my opinion their size could be the only thing to turn someone away from getting these.

I use the pre setting Dance on my ipod and it sounds the best to me. On my pc I raised 32hz +3.2dB, 64 +6.2db, and 125 +5.0dB. The rest i took from Dance and made minute adjustments to them. I wish i could export settings to my ipod, that would be nice...

I have three photos uploaded in my flickr stream

Check back after you've used them for 100 hours, it's too early to tell what it's really like right out of the box.

Ya, hopefully they get better with break in time.

I have some wireless TDK headphones. Sound just as good as beats but are louder (BASS!!!) & no annoying wire.

I ended up ordering a set of Audio-Technica ATH-CKM55s in Gold:

I was originally planning on Shure SE215s but they were double the price and I've read loads of negative comments with the reliability of the connectors.

What in-ear headphones can you all recommend to me for about £15, I'm not after much, just fairly decent sound quality.

The cheapest in-ear headphones that I feel are decent would be the JVC Marshmallows. Cheap but decent sound and relatively good isolation. Certainly better than cheap Skullcandy garbage.

JVC HAFX1X "Xtreme Xplosives" have some decent reviews for £15 in-ears.

I can't stand earmuff headphones, so I just rock earbuds. I had the Sennheiser CX 680 made for Adidas, they fit in my ears perfectly and the buds are properly fit to block outside noise to a degree. I also like that they do not fall out so I can work out without fumbling to put my headphones back on.

At home I just use my computer speakers, they are cheap but they get the job done.

Monoprice 8320.

@Murcie_LP640, what made you choose the ckm55's over the ckm50's? The 55's were boomy and everything just sounded muddy to my ears.

I've got a set of AKG GHS1's. Since I worked in a music studio for years I knew AKG was reliable since that's all we used. Cost me 100 quid, but nothing compares to these. I've had many, many headphones. Everything is just what you'd expect for paying 100 quid for.

I also have a set of Ozone Attack's. Cost me £20 off of ebay, but I don't regret buying them. Much better than most headphones out there in the £20-45 price range. Bass/treble are so clear. Bass could be doing with a little bit of low enough adjustment, but for the price they're a pure bargin. Also the cable is double insulated, with a fabric top layer, plastic middle layer and then the insulated wires underneath. They're very comfortable to use hours on end. I've had my set for ages now, and I wear them at least 7-8 hours straight and not once do they make me feel uncomfortable.

Other reviews put them pretty similar to each other; I prefer the design of the CKM55s and they were about $10 cheaper too.

I do like JVC's, I actually had some Gummy Air ones, not great but they lasted forever, until I lost them. What about these? They're only £15 on Amazon, which is half of what they are at HMV. Thoughts?

They do indeed get the job done, but the bass is a bit overwhelming and muffled at higher volumes to me.

Tends to be the case when Xtreme or similar words in the name.

Tom, I don't know much about the Sony headphones - I feel their products are either very good or very poor when it comes to audio. I'd probably go with the Monoprice ones suggested or the Marshmallows I linked.

Well, there's only one way to find out. I'll make a decision and let you know which ones I buy.

With that said, I am completely satisfied with them as they address the issue I have with earbuds; the bass dies when I'm outdoors.

It matters because that's the only time I would really be using earbuds.

Earbuds are not in-ear though. I've never had issues with bass being lost when I'm outdoors with any of the in-ears I've owned. Well, at least half decent ones that properly sealed.

I bought some JVC Marshmallows earphones today, disappointed to say the least.

Earbud headphones aren't spectacular to say the least.

This is true, they just seem very tinny at full volume. Time to mess around with the EQ..

Ugh... I just refer to anything not not-ear or around-ear as earbuds, including in-ears since they from a broad point of view are so similar.

Then here are some of my other headphones I own:

My modded Koss PortaPros, which I now call my "GradoPros".
Took my old pads off my Grados, quarter Modded then reversed. Then to cover the drivers, I used some of my GF's nylon socks. Also added two foam cushions on the headband.

Then my slightly modded Panasonic RP-HTF600-S. Just different pads and removed the foam over the drivers.

Why on earth would you listen to anything at full volume with those? On any of my devices, full volume ends up making me rip them from my ears in pain - happens sometimes because I use my phone in my car for music as well.

:o!!! i want them in green, soo sick!! what they like?

I quite enjoy them, though it takes a while to get used to the headband.

What amp are you using?

I have the Fii0 E7/E9 combo, but I'm currently using the HifiMan EF2A.

I've removed the foam, done the hole mod, removed the plastic grill and replaced it with mesh, and covered the drivers with felt circles you put on the bottom of furniture to keep the floor from scratching.
