Pretty good movie and got fairly intense at the very end. I just found it hard to take Tobey Maguire serious as a "tough" guy. Most of the movie was very predictable but still worth watching at least once.
My wife chose the movie that we watched last night.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon - ( /10)
Horrible writing, horrible acting, and some cheesy eye rolling lines. I would comment on the story and plot, but I am not quite sure anything actually happened, so I will summarize it with this: Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gonna give it a Riff Trax treatment before I send it back to Netflix.
^ Just wait until you see the transformation Jacob (the warewolf) went through for the 2nd movie (new moon). They said he had 9 months to either "bulk up" for the 2nd movie or he would be replaced. I was quite shocked with his transformation.
I did find the 2nd movie better than the first. More action at least. The first one was quite boring for sure.

Oh yeah oops well shows how much I pay attention to them. Well at least its more action than the 1st movie. That first one was terrible. But yeah the movies are not that good at all. I thought that was obvious.

I watched the first one (not sure why though) and the first one was boring indeed. The only interesting thing was that sort of fight between edward and whatshisname.... uhh the bad guy...
Wait did the movie even have a bad guy?
Not sure...
Love The Beast 2009 This is more of a documentary than a film. It's about Erics relationship with a car he's had since he was a boy, a Ford Falcon XB coupe. We get to see how Eric has rebuilt the car a few times in various colours, all the earlier restorations he did are nothing compared to the complete from the ground up rebuild he did to turn it into a full-on no expense spared hardcore racer. Inserted at various points throughout the film there are insights by Jay Leno & Jeremy Clarkson amongst others, which try & explain the love affair between a car & its owner. The main event of the film is the tracking of Eric & the cars progress running in the Targa Tasmania, a gruelling 5 day road rally event run on closed public roads. I won't spoil it by telling you what happens, suffice to say that this film is a must watch for all car enthusiasts, I'd love to see a follow up in a what happened next type style. 9/10
GI Joe - (6.5/10)
I didn't hate this the way I thought I would, but I do have to ask, "Who the hell wrote this crap?" Removing all semblance of GI Joe and this was a giant story of cliches. Every person in the big team of good guy commandos has some huge history with at least one person on the big team of bad guy terrorists? Really? For the love of...it was a story about a group of awesome commandos fighting awesome terrorists (that sounds wrong). You know what the original back story for GI Joe was? A 5 second voice over in the intro to the show. That was it. The only history between any of them was the battles. The Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow back story bothered me the most. That was a clear sign that someone looked at the character bios and assumed they were tied together, yet the ideological opposite to Storm Shadow was not Snake Eyes, it was Spirit. Not that it mattered by the end of the film, or that there should have been an idealogical opposite, since every ounce of the villain with honor concept that made him awesome was taken from Storm Shadow. But the character story that upset me the most (going spoiler warning here)
was Duke and The Baroness. You know, I don't need to believe that she is a pure sadist out to create anarchy. I can accept that she is just someone caught up in every thing, but the romantic history with Duke that causes her to turn good in the end is horrible for any story, much less this one. Even if you had that making her be able to break the nanomites (really?) control in the end was cheesy, and removes any future threat of Cobra as an organization. It shows that none of the soldiers can be truly relied upon to be evil forever.
Now, there were characters that I did like for how they were portrayed: Scarlett and Zartan. Scarlett was let off without too much back story and that makes her precisely what I remember her as. Zartan too. And using the Metal Gear Solid story ripoff nano tech to explain his abilities was perfect. It gives him his campy abilities while maintaining a pseudo-science explanation. A sequel seriously needs the Dreadnoks. But Ripcord was just poorly portrayed. Sorry, but a Wayans acting like a Wayans is not proper comedic relief.
Now, as for the rest of the movie: The story plays out like a campy James Bond flick and was actually kind of fun and over-the-top. The action was too, with the exception of those stupid accelerator suits. Just how pointless they were was clearly pointed out by the fact that Scarlett was on a motorcycle at the same time. We could have saved millions on CGI by just hiring some stunt drivers and making a traditional high-speed chase, or given them fancy high-tech bikes.
Overall, if I remove my old GI Joe fanboyism (it's hard) it is a fun popcorn action flick with some unnecessary back story elements added. With my fanboyism included, parts fit very well while other things make me wonder if they actually understood why certain characters were popular. And in one instance (Heavy Metal) I am sitting here wondering why he was chosen at all.
Fanboy moment: No Flint and Lady Jaye? That is not GI Joe. And an arctic setting without Snow Job? Blasphemy. And massive underwater escapades without Deep Six, Gung Ho, or Shipwreck is just not right.
I know I said I was going to Riff Trax this, but they don't have it yet.
Re: GI Joe -- I'm surprised anyone would give it anything above 2.
Music Within (Steven Sawalich, 2007) -- The true story of Richard Pimentel, a brilliant public speaker with a troubled past, who returns from Vietnam severely hearing-impaired and finds a new purpose in his landmark efforts on the behalf of Americans with disabilities. As a movie it's not a bad effort and it certainly has its moments, but once you look into the plot, it's just another movie about a guy who has a certain disability and works to help other people with disabilities. The soundtrack is good, as any movie recreated in the 70s is... so, again it's a good movie, but nothing ground breaking in almost any sense. 7/10
As mindless, summer blockbusters go it was OK. I could tear it down easily, but it didn't make me want to turn it off. A 5-7 range for me is in the, won't buy it for keeps, but wouldn't turn it off if I saw it on TV and was bored, range.
In contrast: I started just giggling and eye rolling at the awfulness of New Moon. GI Joe only got the occasional, "Why is this bit here?" But it became obvious by a certain point that GI Joe was not taking itself seriously. It had embraced the campiness of what GI Joe was and played it out for all it was worth. The moment you recognize that it wasn't trying to do action like Die Hard, but rather more like Big Trouble in Little China you start to enjoy it for being stupid.
And I think that was the biggest issue with the film. It was marketed as a quality summer action film, but it was actually presented like a Darwin Award winner saying, "Hold my beer and watch this."

OK, that did get me in the Paris chase scene. At least that was where it was most apparent as the CGI clashed with real film footage. But that goes back to my points about the suits. Some quality stunt work would have been better. Some of the underwater type stuff was expected though, since GI Joe was infamous for fighting in out-of-the way places with technology to make James Bond jealous.
The Book of Eli (The Hughes Brothers, 2010) -- Got invited to watch this by a friend, and it was either this or a chick flick. I liked it better than I thought I would, especially since Denzel Washington is kind of annoying to me (always a cop or a security person). About the movie, I've always been a fan of post-apocalyptic flicks and the downgrading of society; this one works it well but the cinematography is what it's all about. The sound also is good and there's a bunch of explosion and gun fights to prove it. There's a few ignorable plot holes and some awkward scenes (I believe the movie is based on a comic, so that would explain a lot), but in general the movie is very enjoyable... a good alternative from the usual droning movies that get spewed out. 7/10
So I thought this was kind of horror, which it kind of isn´t. The story reminded my strong of a story of a typical FPS space-themed game. So no innovation here. Actors : their acting is alright, a hot chick in it (a copy of Alison RE).
The ending is cool, some (4 me) unexpected events.
All in all, a cool movie. Not a brainer, but i liked it.
Last week, i watched
The Spirit,
And well, some of you told me it wasn´t to compare with sin city.
Totally agree. Main caracter is boff, only the celebreties take it out a bit (only Johannson and Medez, Jackson since Snakes on a plane has sunk in my respect). The style of filming is cool. That´s it! Story is crystal clear from the beginning, the end is so cheesy...
All in all a movie not worth a buy on BR and in total only a 4,5/10 (maybe because it´s compared to Sin city, but it is a Frank Miller (?) so it comes from the same pen)
Let's recap with a game I'd like to call "What Stan Lee has already done in previous mediums but has revived into this money making cow." Not very eloquent, I know, but let's move on.
Maggie is the daughter of an Interpol agent and an actress. One night, she is given powers through a freak incident such that she is now chameleon-like. After multiple questions along the lines of "what just happened" and what is wrong with me" she decided to user he new powers for good. Somehow despite having her powers for only a few days she is able to overcome those that have had them for... longer. Ancient relics, long forgotten race, etc. Add in to that that the animation is reminiscent of the X-Men from 1992. Which would be fine if it was 1992.
Knowing the campy nature of the movie, Stan and script writer Scott Lobdell worked in a few nods to previous endeavors with lines like "bitten by a radioactive... chameleon." Oh, and to top it off, he's even recycled Rogue into the role of Maggie as she is voiced by Anna Paquin.
All-in-all, it's not atrocious, but it certainly wasn't all that entertaining, either.
Date Night: So I'm typically not a Steve Carell fan, but this seemed like a good date movie, so Kari and I went after the Tigers game. I had low expectations going into the movie, mainly because I think The Office is one of the lamest shows on TV. I was surprised though, the movie was really really funny and I pretty much laughed non stop throughout the whole thing. Carell still had his lame sense of humour but it wasn't god awful like The Office is. Tina Fey played her role perfectly as well and was pretty entertaining too. The best part though was William Fichtner's role, it wasn't major but he fit his role so perfectly it was great.
It's not going to win any awards for anything, but it's definitely entertaining.
What can I say that hasn't already been said about this wonderful film? I had seen bits and pieces of the film in the past, but until recently had not sat down to watch the entire film. The story is written by Paddy Chayefsky who also worked on another interesting film "Altered States". Featuring Faye Dunaway, Peter Finch, and William Holden (as well as Robert Duvall as the evil "Hackett"). The cast is incredible and the acting follows suit. Some of the strongest most passionate performances ever put to celluloid. It's easy to forget you're watching actors, and really get caught up in their drama. Beyond that, it's incredibly apt considering where we stand as a nation currently. Pretty much everything foreshadowed in the film is actually happening now. Very touching, motivating, and saddening all at the same time. Must watch 9/10
"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"
Le Premier Jour du Reste de ta Vie (a.k.a. The First Day of the Rest of Your Life) (Rémi Bezançon, 2008) -- A sprawling drama centered around five keys days in a family's life, with high doses of humour that make it a very enjoayble movie, despite dealing with strong subjects. The characters are lovable enough and the 'slice of life' occasions seem completely believable. How plot pans out can be a tad predictable because this has been done before, but this movie is very well acted and had a kick-ass soundtrack. Movies like this, with different characters (the 5 members of the family, which are very different) have a high unversal appeal, since most people can relate to a characters in some way. The movie is highly entertaining and very well paced... like it a lot. 8.5/10
Kevin Parson's is a seminary student that receives a phone call from a serial killer who threatens Kevin with murder unless he confesses his sins. There really isn't much else that can be said without giving away the whole thing, as so much of the story is intertwined, so I'll leave it there.
Watched this last night and its easily one of the best Ninja type movies I have ever watched. The gore is just unreal. I havent seen a movie this gory in years. Just brutal violence.

I had the same reaction... I watch a lot of fighting movies and I put this one on with no expectations at all... Saw the first scene and I was immediately sold... I loved the Anime style approach they took on this movie... fit it perfectly.
