Well missing the Norse mythology trail makes me feel stupid, not that I've ever studied it properly but I knew I recognised all of the names and ideas presented! I get what you say about far advanced science seeming like magic (being the next best conclusion), but here and now its just that bit too far away and was something that is just accepted for the film.
Stan Lee has been quoted as saying that the reason why he created Thor was because he wanted to create a hero that could challenge Hulk. Basically, an immortal god was his only option.

Captain America: The First Avenger

My favorite movie of the summer. Simply fun to watch. It's definitely up there with Iron Man.

After Il Gattopardo (which is not a Leopard but a Serval, which you'll find on the coat of arms of a small Italian island closer to Tripoli than Sicily) I stumbled upon another film starring Alain Delon, Le Samourai. Being a fan of Japanese culture, it caught my eye, so I checked it out. 8.2/10 at IMDB, and not Japanese at all.

Le Samourai has a classic "private eye" soundtrack, and it's main character, a sort of assassin, is appropriately almost always clad in a beige raincoat/trench coat and fedora. It's 8 minutes into the movie before the first dialogue. Lots of classic old Peugeots and a couple of out of place '67 Camaros.

Very subtle treatment in this film. Minimalist. An amazing ending, touching despite the stoic theme carried throughout all but the last few minutes.

So a couple weeks ago I saw about 3/4 of Shawn of the dead and found it pretty exciting and funny. Today I was on this site that gives you random movies to watch and it suggested Hot Fuzz. I thought it was dumb British comedy, but I have heard a few times it's good so I figured I'd watch it. Definitely better than expected. The same as Shawn of the dead where the plot is written well and still lots of funny moments. Tons of action too. If your looking for a funny action movie with a interesting "Clue" like plot I highly recommend checking it out

Be Kind Rewind (Michel Gondry, 2008) -- Two bumbling store clerks inadvertently erase the footage from all of the tapes in their video rental store. In order to keep the business running, they re-shoot every film in the store with their own camera, with a budget of zero dollars. Though I've liked some of Gondry's movies very much (such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), I sometimes find his work too dispersed, and this movie is a prime example of it. There's so much going on and the plot changes so much that I could've watch it in five different segments and thought it was different movies with the same actors. Once again, Jack Black manages to kill the movie for me so that's two things this movie had going against it, the inclusion of Danny Glover is the third. Other than that, and despite its confusing stance, it's a decent and light comedy not to be taken too seriously and with a very heartwarming ending. 4/10

We own both movies. Very funny...and not at all low brow trashy humor...just good fun sarcastic british humor. I recommend them to everyone.

Indagine su un Cittadino al di Sopra di Ogni Sospetto (a.k.a. Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion) (Elio Petri, 1970) -- A chief of detectives, homicide section, kills his mistress and deliberately leaves clues to prove his own responsibility for the crime, seeking to prove the ineptitude of his peers and the absurdity of the bureaucratic system in Italian fascist society. Thus, the movie is more like a highly satirical exploration of moral corruption in Italy during the late 60s. Acting and cinematography are excellent, especially the stark concrete and flat colors, but what made this movie grand also was the soundtrack by Enio Morricone. One of the great Italian movies of last century, winner of the Oscar for best Foreign Movie. 7/10

On a similar tone, I watched "Paul" last night. Sean Pegg and Nick Frost again, this time as sci-fi loving tourists who come across an alien. The humour is very similar again, but I didn't think it was as good as either Shawn of the dead or Hot fuzz.

Cowboys & Aliens (7/10)
First off, if you are going to make Olivia Wilde get nekkid go for the R-rating and let me see. Jon Favreau is hogging all the Olivia Wilde.

That said, its a pretty fun movie. I was unsure about how this would go over on screen since cowboys and aliens are two very contrasting concepts in fiction. Favreau took it the only way that makes sense, they are two very contrasting concepts. It starts out mostly like a normal western, to the point of cliche. You got the rich guy that runs everything and the lone stranger causing trouble. And when they are in the middle of this back and forth aliens show up.

The aliens are when things begin shaking off the cliches. It was a relatively different take on their reasons for being here. But the one thing that cannot be missed is that there is no way you can see the aliens compared to the time period and not notice how much they stick out.

I was a tad disappointed in the creature designs. Is it impossible for creature designers to come up with different concepts at the same time? There was a lot of similarity to Super 8. I may check to see if they used the same guy or effects house for their creature effects.

EDIT: Think I found it. The Concept Designer was the Concept Artist for Super 8.

Half a point off for a few slow moments and a touch of predictability. But it was fun movie that compares to Favreau's other action-oriented films.

You had me at Olivia Wilde. Wasn't going to see this, as I would be boycotting it because they're not making Ninja Pirates... but maybe I will, now.

Suck (2009)
Suck-Movie.jpg

Suck is a Canadian comedy about a struggling rock band (the "Winners") touring America and getting into all sorts of high jinks as they try to break into the big time. Nothing original there.

It's also a movie about a pretty girl who becomes a vampire, struggling with the addiction to blood. Nothing original there, either.

Put them together and you have a struggling rock band whose sudden link with the undead catapult them into the kind of success they could only dream of, all the while trying desperately to hide the dead bodies they leave in their wake. Now that's sort of original.

Now, I'm not going to give in to the temptation to say that this movie "sucked", but it comes close. The humor is strained in parts, the plot is lousy, and the movie plays all the vampire tropes straight... their roadie's name is "Hugo" for chris'sakes. It's obviously not classy theater, and the effects are as cheesy and cheap as a late night Cable Special. (Yes, I watched it on cable) But it's an oddly compelling watch.

I say oddly compelling because once I'd started it, I was hooked. The soundtrack is pretty decent, and the turns by such aging rock icons as Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop are fascinating... Anyone who hates Moby will love his final scene here. Malcolm McDowell hams it up appropriately as "Eddie Van Helsing", lowering his acting standards to match the movie. Jessica Paré is compelling as the vampire goddess slash bass player. Director Rob Stefaniuk plays straight man for all this madness as lead singer of a band that's become so addicted to fame, they're willing to take a bite out of the dark side to keep it... and despite the groan-worthy parts, it really is funny.

This will never be on anyone's "Ten Best" list... but it's funny, watchable and definitely worth a tub of popcorn on date night (yes, my lady loved it) or when you've got nothing else to do.

5/10 - objectively
8/10 - just for the sheer fun of it.

Suck is on Netflix. :D

*settles in for 90 minutes of sucktasticness*

I've considered watching it for a while but something else has always caught my eye (I'm currently on a Battlestar Galactica marathon) so now's as good a time as ever. Too bad I won't get very far into it tonight...

Edit: Right out of the gate that has got to be the worst CG bat I've ever seen. This really has more potential than I previously thought.

I did that over the winter. It was great until the end.

I need to write up my reviews for the Transmorpher movies and The Day the Earth Stopped. Hopefully I'll get a bit more time later this week.

I saw this on Saturday night and agree on everything above.

Saw Horrible Bosses tonight, thought it was an entertaining movie. Lots of funny moments through the whole film, and a great movie to watch with a couple friends.

I ASs well completely agree. The movie though predictible was rather entertaining. i was throughly in squee mode. especially since ive always thought about the fsct that cowboys should meet up with some aliens. (hollywood snuck into my brain and stole my idea... how dare them!)

The opening completely threw me off guard but alas i was hooked at the 10 minute mark lol.

Hollywood borrowed the idea from comics.

I know the feeling though. In high school I was taking an AP English course and we had a year-long writing project where we were expected to turn a couple of pages of creative writing a week. I devoted every week to working on a story about dragons appearing in modern times. About five or six years after I graduated "Reign of Fire" came out and ruined that concept from ever seeing the light of day again.

And no, my story had no other details in common with "Reign of Fire."

That's nothing. I started a comic (never finished) about a high school girl kicking monster behind before Buffy came out...only to find out later that the first Buffy came out in the 80's...

More worryingly, I created a comic strip for our high school paper featuring a dweebish character whose vanity and self-assurance are totally out of sync with reality. He's also completely clueless (He beats up Santa Claus at one point).

He was blond, with ridiculously overstyled hair, and wore shades. And he was named "Bobby Bogart".

Cartoon Network owes me royalties. Big time.

Red (2010)

3.5/5 stars

The plot is pretty straight forward. Retired CIA agent is targeted by the CIA in an effort to clean up loose ends. He must pull in his old buddies to discover the truth. Toss in a girl who has no idea what's going on and you've got a movie. The pace is very quick and the transitions are fresh. The one-liners are typical and good for a chuckle without you gagging. This movie does the action sequences right. And there is little or no frantic shakey-cam that is used too much in today's action flicks. The relationship between Bruce Willis and Mary-Louis Parker is a bit odd and he seems like a stalker, but I congratulate the casting director for not sticking some 20-something in the role. Mary is 9 years Bruce's junior but that's about as close as you'll get to a proper match in Hollywood. John Malcovich and Brian Cox do a great job acting as well. This movie is 100 times better than Stallon's attempt with "The Expendables". Overall, it was an enjoyable light hearted movie to watch. It fits into the action-comedy genre quite nicely.

On a side note, it looks like there may be an "Expendables 2" coming out, and Bruce Willis will join the cast of has-beens as the villan. I'll probably watch it, but I won't keep my hopes up. I think I lost brain cells watching the first one. All I can think about is that horrible line from Rambo II when the girl says "Wambo, what mean Expendabo?"

Just watched "Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the Lighting Thief"

MV5BMTQ0MzY5OTQ2N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzI1MTU5Mg@@._V1._SY317_CR0,0,214,317_.jpg

Never really been interested in the books, but just watching the movie, you can tell that they stray from canon by quite a bit... sometimes for humorous effect (they drive a Maserati out of a casino... the Maserati logo is a Trident)... sometimes simply to save space (they've omitted some of the history of the main characters). Hell, I was expecting Cereberus to appear in Hell... and he didn't. I had to look it up... and yes, indeed... he did appear in the book.

This leaves it only fitfully watchable... as some things are left unexplained... we are never given a compelling reason for the actions of the Lightning Thief... and other things that happen just don't work well or even make much sense. There's not even much of a sense of wonder in the production... it lacks that comical quirkiness that you get from the Potter series (and apparently the Percy Jackson books).

Percy Jackson is shown as so confident and proficient in the use of his powers from the outset (again, different from the book) that the tasks given him don't really seem to be such a challenge... or shouldn't be, if not for fiat of poor script-writing.

We're never given proper reasons for anything that happens in this movie, and the resolution is not satisfying in any way, shape or form.

I think the yawning at the end probably wasn't just due to the late hours.

5/10

Just watched Limitless. Pretty entertaining flick. The blood scene was a little gross though.

Finally watched The Social Network. Love that Trent Reznor did the music, pretty obvious early on. Main character kept reminding me of Michael Cera. Pretty intense contemporary drama with some PG-13 excess and debauchery thrown in. The story of a modern phenomenon. Worth a watch, well made film.

Saw Horrible Bosses tonight, thought it was an entertaining movie. Lots of funny moments through the whole film, and a great movie to watch with a couple friends.
Saw this as well. I will add it did 2 things very "right".

1: Aniston as a brunette; gorgeous.
2. Aniston as a filthy-speaking nympho? Hugghhhh....

I do agree with point 1, but point 2 didn't seem relevant to the rest of the film (or really believable with Aniston). But ultimately I don't care, because it's a comedy, Aniston like that is...as you put it, Hugghhhhh..... , and it was hilarious. I don't go to a movie like that for an Oscar calibre script.

I will say though, it was a bit tough watching Aniston like that shortly after watching "Just Go With It", because she was playing such an innocent character there. Also, Charlie Day was hilarious.

Also, went to see Friends With Benefits with my girlfriend last night. Of course it was a chick flick, but it wasn't half bad. Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis were very good on screen together. The chemistry between those two actors made it an entertaining flick for me. And the gay sports writer (Woody Harrelson (Zombieland)) was hilarious. It's predictable, of course, but still manages to be entertaining...ish.

Captain America: 9/10 - personally, 8/10 - realistically.

Last bit left off for cheesy ending and terrible Avengers trailer... the spoiler in saying this would be: your movie experience may or may not be spoiled by either staying or not staying till the very end of the credits.

Review to follow.
